How come? I'm still tring to figure out the difference especially since they are considering banning Pit Bulls in all of Ontario but I think it excludes American Staffordsire Bull Terriers.
I think I read something about how it is okay to reg an Am Staff as a Pit Bull but not vice versa. Please explain this stuff.

We have 2 APBTs...

And Haley
How come?
The AmStaff was derived from APBTs, when the AKC decided to recognize the breed, they allowed UKC registered APBTs to be registered as AmStaffs. So, basically, all AmStaffs came from APBTs, no other breed added in. Since the AmStaffs all have APBT (and only APBT)ancestors, they can also be registered as APBTs, but since many APBTs have ancestors other than those dogs the AKC accepted into their books as AmStaffs, they're not able to be registered as purebred AmStaffs. There are still dogs today that are registered with both registries (even some registered with AKC, UKC, and ADBA- an APBT only registry) The argument then becomes whether breeding away from one purpose (fighting- the UKC actually began as a fighting dog registry, hosted matches as well, before it turned the conformation registry we know it as today) and for another (conformation shows). The breeds have been seperate for around 70 yrs now, so the question becomes; are they still the same breed because they and UKC APBTs have been bred from the same basic stock, or are they different because there's been enough time for them to develop enough different traits from the APBT to be an entirely different breed?

Then, to complicate matters, you have different factions in the same breeds, so you have 4 basic varieties of pit bull/AmStaff (at least the way I break it down)...
-show only APBT/AmStaff- usually pretty similar in appearance to each other, the farthest in appearance from the APBt of old
working APBT/AmStaff- also pretty similar in appearance, not nearly as overdone as show only dogs, but also not often as clearly made for -fighting as many performance bred APBTs, can also be conformation dogs, but aren't bred soley for what's winning in the ring, but rather what form is best suited for what the breeds do.
-performance bred APBT- usually the closest in appearance to the original APBT
-APBTs/AmStaffs not really bred for any purpose- these dogs make up the majority of APBTs, dunno about AmStaffs. They're usually pretty moderate dogs, some really poorly built, some built fairly well, some leaning toward performance/working build, others toward the conformation only type looks. Then there are the huge mastiff mixes, which can't really be considered APBTs anyway.

There isn't actually an American Staffordshire Bull Terrier breed, but there are American Staffordshire Terriers and Staffordshire Bull Terriers, two different breeds. The latter has been a seperate breed from AmStaffs and APBTs longer than either of the two have been seperate, I'm guessing at least 100 yrs (SarahStaff can answer this better than me, as she has Staffordshire Bull Terriers). It is often included in BSL under the "pit bull" definition, but sometimes not. AmStaffs are almost always included, due to the debate as to whether they are or aren't the same breed as the APBT (doesn't help that many people often think the two names are interchangeable).

When I was growing up my grandparents had one. His name was blackie there were never known for original names. I used to crawl into his dog house with him. Later on I looked at the dog house long after he had past and it was old and dirty and thrown to the side of the yard and couldn't believe I fit into it. Anyway he bit my cousin in the face when he was three and everyone was all shocked they couldn't believe blackie would do that. Then later after my grandmother was asking him what happened my cousin showed her where he grabbed the dog. Lets just say it was before neutering was as common as it is today. You can't blame a dog for that.

More Bulldoggy look, bigger head, more barrellike body, shorter legs. More dog-freindly than APBT/AST, sweet dogs. (Not that APBT/AST aren't sweet too.)
I think the dog in the top pic is a little off btw.

he is gorgeous. And his name fits so well. Taurus-the-Bull...with those outstanding eyes and that stare, he looks a little like a bull. I can see someone feeling a little intimidated by that stare. His eye color makes it look that way. Huskies always look a little more intimidating too, because of the eye color, and the stares they have....

MY Taurus was a GR, looked about as intimidating as tree sap, but underneath it all he was easily as stubborn as a real bull....
correct me if I'm wrong (and I am, quite often it seems) but isnt a "true"
Pittie somewhere between 30-50 lbs? the big ones are mixes, like K mentioned arent they? I cant see a dog with legs that short weighing 90 lbs. It just seems wrong somehow....completely out of proportion....
your right, a TRUE pit bull is in the 30-50 pound range, but more like the 30-40 range.
the "pits" that you see that are like 80lbs and over are most likely mixed.
You can breed a big pit to a big pit and get big pits, and keep doing that, but you are breeding away from the standard and everything else, and therefore the dogs are not true to their breed

Eli is about 58lbs. he's a lil big, but he's is well proportioned and he is definately not some oversized monster pit
I consider the APBT and Am Staff to be the same breed..but anywayz.
Really? They're two seperate and different breeds now, with some similarities and a lot of differences. In looks especially, somewhat temperament, breeding purpose, and health problems. As well as the limited bloodlines of the AST.
Sash is right here although 'correct' APBT size is not much above the size of my SBT's (38.2 lbs and 38.8 lbs) I think we have TruePits on here whos dogs are very 'correct' ...can you comment TP?
Sure, I won't miss a chance to show off my bullies. I'm a picture posting freak as it is.

Then I have my new pup. She's a red brindle-red nose.
She is so hyper and hard to get pics of.
A good range is 30-50lbs.
About SBT, the show dogs are bully like that, but performance bred SBT look just like APBTs, very hard to tell a difference at all. Kind of like the AST and the APBT.

DogPaddle did you get permission to post those images? If not, you may want to get permission before posting copywritten pictures such as the SBT's you posted.

AllAmericanPUP I was just wondering if Eli is registerred with the UKC or ADBA because he/she looks more like a pit mix or pit/Boxer mix than a pure APBT in my opinion.

If you are really interested in knowing the differences, or, the lack of difference in the breed at it's true representation you can read this http://www.workingpitbull.com/amstaffpit.htm I am just tired of typing it out once again as I have many times.
