1. I think it's a genuine concern too. Many people keep collars on their dogs because what good are the tags if the dog isn't wearing them when they get loose. Microchips are good, if someone bothers to check for one. Some people are more likely to look for an owner if the tag is seen right away. People think stray when they see no collar with tags. I can't imagine my dogs ever getting out but if some kind of stange occurance happened and they got out I prefer that the first person who gets ahold of him or her calls me directly instead of bringing them to animal control while I am freaking out the entire time. My grandma found her way back to us because of a collar and tag. Right after being diagnosed with alzheimers and before we knew how far along she was she walked out the front door, walked down a block and fell. She had no purse, no id at all. But she brought her chihuahua, Angel with her. Angel had on a collar with tags. The police took the information from the tag and brought her home. Thank God she wasn't hurt and both Angel and grandma got home to us. So I think it's a wonderful idea and don't understand where the hostility towards Dr. John is coming from.
2.

I called it hopeless after five minutes. Do any of you realize what a city looks like? Do any of you realize how far an animal can travel in a short period of time? I looked for four hours before it got unsafe for even us to look. I asked nearby business if they saw her, and nobody did. Where do you start when in a city you don't even know yourself?
No... We all living in the smurfing hills you dumbass!
I know the above quote happened on page 3 and it's probably way off topic by this page but that comment just had my rolling.

National news!?!?

I don't like the fact that the dogs aren't identified correctly everytime that is wrong. But I don't think this case made national coverage just because it's possibly pit bulls. I think if we ever have a pack of golden retrievers attacking children who were going door to door for fundraising it would make the news. It's not just a dog bite the child is in critical condition and several other people are injured. I hate breed bans but everytime there is a pit bull attack it's belittled on here and picked apart to make it seem not so bad. It's bad it's really bad. It would be nice if we could sympathize with the child who almost lost his life and then talk about whether they are pit bulls or not.
4.
Time for me to log off for the night! Now you guys be good!!!!!!!!! I'll be back another day to argue with ya. Seriously, I may never totaly agree with a single person on here and I will give my POV but, I will never get upset with anyone for giving theres. I love a good debate or discussion, whatever you want to call it, as long as it doesnt resort to name calling. There is never any thing good to come from that, and I am very happy with the way the debates go around here.. Well, at least the ones that I have seen anywway.
Wow!! Can you stay here and never go? You singlehandly stopped what could have gotten really ugly. You gave Buddy's mom a chance to speak without making her feel she shouldn't have her own opinion. Your a good guy. :D I think we can all learn from that.
5. My grandmother once told me about a dog they had taken in that had just had puppies but the pups were taken away. I am not sure what the story was but my grandma said this dog was so distraught and when given a stuffed toy she carried it around like it was her pup for years. Now Peaches didn't just have a litter so that can't be why she is doing this now. It could simply be that she just really loves her new toy and feels that there has never been a better toy ever.
6. This is off topic but I can't help it I have soft spot for my grandparents and it saddened me that you called your grandpa stupid. :( My grandpa wasn't perfect by any means but I just was raised to believe that you show your grandparents and extra amount of respect and it saddens me that you don't. It's your dog and you have to protect the dog anyway possible and that includes making sure grandpa doesn't get a chance to let her out.
7.
I always have the chuckle (or else I'd cry) when a Lab or a Spaniel attacks someone and there's not a story about it. Nevermind a head-line...bias, bias, bias.
All those links are stories done about dog attacks that aren't pit bulls.
8. I know it sucks having to live in someone else's house. We had to do that for awhile with my grandfather that was a clean freak to the point if he saw a fork in the sick he went nuts. But it was his house and there is nothing I could do about it. Remember your dogs may be fat when you leave with them but you have them. I was watching a report about people who couldn't take their dogs with them and dogs wandering around and no one knows where they belong. Try to keep that thought with you while your father in law is driving you nuts.
9. :o I have no idea how she will manage. Perhaps someone else can help. When my niece was a baby I used to take the dog for a walk with her but she was a 6 year old very well behaved dog and there were no stairs involved in getting out of the house. I can't imagine how she will handle it alone.
10. Good point Michele a trip to the vet is a great idea!
11. Oh man you have gotten yourself into a bad situation. The shelties I have met including my own have been submissive, sensitive dogs. The above are so right you got to get her into training immediately. I don't think your actually putting her into her place or it wouldn't keep coming up. You said you retaliated, what do you mean by that? I assume you have never hit her.
12. I am curious why it is that piss and ass are blocked but fucking is not. Isn't that a bit odd? If I had a choice, which I don't, I think I would rather have the grand daddy of swear words blocked rather then the others. Who makes the rules on censorship? Is the individual board administrators or someone else?
13. Poor thing! How hard to have to go to a new home so old.
14.
Awww, poor Sassy. I've never had a dog with UTIs, but my mom (who is in a nursing with Alzheimer's) used to get them a lot. I hope the vet can help get her system figured out so that she doesn't continue to get them.
I'm sorry about your mom. My grandmother is in a nursing home with Alzheimers too. How far along is she? Grandma still recognizes us but has a really hard time figuring out where she is and can't follow a conversation.
15. That is probably he secret desire but hasn't had a chance yet. So he took the next best thing.
16. I noticed that DeafAussieLover's name is in black on the topic page. Does that mean she is gone? Everyone else's is blue and underlined.
17. I didn't even consider the fact that while I was out of the room they were in the play yard where he can't get in and they can't get out. But I forgot she had that toy.
18. I am fostering a couple of kittens for the spca this is shadows first long term contact meaning more then a day to kittens. He has been handling it well. But today I saw him run by with something in his mouth and it was meowing. I freaked and ran to him and it was my nieces fur real kitty that meows when you touch it. I don't know what my problem is the toy doesn't even have the same coloring as the kittens.
19. I've stayed out of this mess because I do agree that she might be making some decisions that aren't best for the animals in her care but the comments about personal appearance are childish and uncalled for. edited to add I meant aren't best.
20.
I agree as well DAL. things with his vision or health could have changed since the last checkup. Alex went blind in two weeks, no one saw it coming, least of all me. now he had a somewhat rare disease, called blastomycosis, but it changed, in two weeks, his entire personality. since he has been aggressive all along, if the health check comes back negative, he needs a behaviorist.
That happened to Toto as well, he loved every person he came in contact with and they loved him. But he had progressive retinal atrophy and his personality started to change. It happened first at night when we would enter the room and he would growl and run at us but he always stopped when he got close enough to realize it was us. Then one night he ran at me and attacked my hand. Then he stopped when he realized it was me. So we kept him separated at night from my 10 year old niece. Then this past April it started happening during the day and he actually went to attack my niece but when she yelled he stopped. He was filled with so much fear and anxiety that I had to euthanize him. When we brought him in he was in the waiting room able to see a bit clearer in the bright lights so he was happily interacting with the children as usual. I almost walked out but I knew I had to stay it would only get worse. So checking Cody's sight again isn't a bad idea you never know I was certainly surprised how quickly he changed because I didn't notice the early signs.
21. I use chicken wire I had some problems with Mandy digging under the fence and then Toto following her  when we first moved here so I put chicken wire a couple of inches under the dirt, covered it back over. Mandy only tried once I was the dirt over the chicken wire misplaced she never did it again. They absolutely hate the feeling of their nails on the chicken wire as you could imagine.
22.

Why is it everytime a large breed dog is involved in these kind of incidents especially pit bulls everyone says how horrible the owners are and poor dog for having to live with someone like that. Even when there is a death. But a little dog is involved and the little dog stories come out to prove how horrible they are and how they are the worst. No getting mauled and killed is the worst. Not talking to everyone just the ones that made statements that include all small dogs.
Cairn, No offense, but I think you're too sensitive when folks make statements about little dogs. We've had discussions on this board concerning aggressive Labs, Pits and other breeds. No one singles out little dogs. And all through this thread people have placed the blame where it belongs--on the dog owner! The fact of the matter is that SOME small dog owners let their dogs get away with bad behavior that is exacerbated by the dog's inherent personality. A Westie, for instance, is by nature tenacious because it's a terrier. A spoiled Westie would be a tenacious biter. There isn't a bias here against small dogs. I think you should be a little less sensitive. People at dogo love dogs no matter what size they are. :)
Have you ever owned a terrier?
23.

I think that with the witch hunts that are a part of society these days, dog owners people tend to react defensively when a situation occurs with a large dog, particularly certain breeds. Honestly, to admit even the slightest natural behavioral issue with any breed, no matter what the size, is to lose our footing with BSL lobbyists. Of course we all know here that the problem always lies in the owner, maybe in an individual dog, and in most dog bite cases the animal is being kept improperly one way or another. The major difference between large dogs and small dogs is that no one bothers to carry on about how 'dangerous' small dog breeds and lobby to ban them. At least not yet... And in regards to that little Westie mix I ran into today, his problem is definately his owner. He needs to be in a home that understands dogs, when that woman's baby grows into dog chasing toddler I can almost promise you that the dog will be going through the ol' quarantine and PTS routine at the pound. I do agree that it's derogatory to say that all little dogs are jerks, but I do think that it is more often the case in smaller dogs than larger ones. Alot of small breeds are terriers, or very terrier-like, which makes them born with an attitude to begin with. Another thing to keep in mind is that smaller dogs are more convieniently sized for puppy-millers, thus theoretically more prone to temperment issues due to irresponsibility on the breeders behalf. Then of course there is the small dog owner attitude that because their dog is small and not a threat to life and limb, that they don't need to have manners. Just some thoughts of mine on the issue.
Thank you Canis for addressing what I said maturely. I agree that in society large breed dogs especially pits are much more likely to have derogatory comments and that is an understatement. That wasn't the problem I had here. This is a site dedicated to dogs so with this group I expect them to be a little more aware of what they say in regards to dogs. This site also spends a great deal of time outraged about the treatment and stereotyping of pit bulls. So I guess I expected a little more maturity when speaking about a breed of dog. No matter what the breed. To me this goes along the same lines of when discussing a pit bull mauling I find tons of posts describing how this lab bit me or I am more afraid of cocker spaniels then pits. So many personal anecdotes that have nothing to do with the breeds mentioned. Pointing your finger at another breed to make one look better is never a good idea. I expect more out of educated dog owners. So in this case I guess I expected more then big laughs at your situation. There was no poor dog for having such lousy owners that are going to get their dog killed. Just hahahaha that rotten little dog.
24. Actually your lucky the westie didn't get you there is nothing pleasant about a westie's teeth. Have you looked at their teeth there nothing little about their teeth? My cairn terrier which basically the same dog had very large teeth and if he wanted to could take quite a big chuck out of you. I measured the teeth once and he had the same size teeth as my 50lb dog. He never did bite until he lost his sight before that he made friends wherever he went he was just a joy so it gets kind of frustrating when blanket statements about little dogs being the worst are made. Owners are the worst. He was a joy and the most brilliant dog I have ever met. I agree some small dogs are pains but that is only because of owners who don't know what they are doing.
