Sharpeigirl Posted October 1, 2003 Posted October 1, 2003   What a mess today has been. Sassy & Pepper where in their respective crates when i left for work, i came home, let them both out in the backyard. I kept hearing something that sounded funny. I turned around to see Sassy on top of Pepper just tearing her apart   By the time I got Sassy away, Pepper was allready to far gone, she died on the way to the Emergancy Vets. What did I do wrong??? Why did my sweet Sassy turn into a monster overnight. Last night & this morning they where fine togther. But as soon as they hit that backyard, Sassy went into a mode that scared me. Right now I don't know if I'm going to keep Sassy or not. It's just all to hard to figure out right now. I feel so guilty :( :( Quote

Sanvean Posted October 1, 2003 Posted October 1, 2003 Oh, you poor thing...you must be in so much pain right now. *Hugs* I wouldn't make any hasty decisions about Sassy. Like the other said, she may need to be an only dog. I know that you must feel very hurt and shocked by what she did, though. Maybe you can talk to a behaviorist and find out what might have caused her to do something like that. Was Pepper very old? Maybe Sassy thought she was a challenge to her "status" in the house? Quote
imported_Kat Posted October 1, 2003 Posted October 1, 2003 Aww hon, I am so so sorry that this had to happen. Take good care and get on with things as best you can. *hugs* Quote
midori115 Posted October 1, 2003 Posted October 1, 2003 I'm so sorry that this happened. Our thoughts are with you. Quote
Peng1zrule Posted October 1, 2003 Posted October 1, 2003 i'm so sorry for your loss! sometimes dogs will turn on each other if one is ill but not showing it. I heard of someone with six full grown german shepherds...the newest one, just a pup, was taken to the groomer and smelled completley differently from the other shepherds...she was attacked when she got home. could this have happened--pet store, groomer, or vet visit? maybe she was ill in some way, such as an internal problem you could not have detected...I say take your time in deciding what to do with the other dog, it's not an easy decision or one to be rushed into. Guest Anonymous Posted October 1, 2003 Posted October 1, 2003 I am so sorry that it turned out this way. I agree with everyone else, that you should wait to make your mind up about Sassy. And please do not blame yourself. You did the right thing, what happened was not your fault. I know it's hard to not feel that way, to question if you maybe did something wrong..but you did your best and what has happened was between the dogs, not you. Quote
abker17 Posted October 1, 2003 Posted October 1, 2003 OMG I'm so sorry. :( :( What an awful thing to have to go through!!!!! :x :( I agree with the others, wait until u've calmed down a bit to decide whether or not to keep Sassy. This is going to be a very hard time for u, I'll be sending lots of prayers and good thoughts your way. Quote

Guest Anonymous Posted October 1, 2003 Posted October 1, 2003 Right now Sassy is at a friends house until I deal with what's going on. I just don't know how to feel about her until I find out what caused this. Sassy is a domiant-dog personailty, Pepper thought she was a domiant dog also I think. Who knows. Tomorrow we have an apointment with my vet & trainer. Thank you all for your kind words. Quote

Tomorrow we have an apointment with my vet & trainer[/quote] Sharpie, if it helps....some dogs just do not ever get along. If they both had dominant personalities, and one wouldnt back down, this was bound to happen. As sad as it is, it was inevtiable. In their doggie minds, the pecking order is everything. It's as instinctive as breathing. The whole pack society would fall apart if the leser animals did not obey the leader. It's what the whole pack, and dog instincts, are made up of..... I went through "testing" Freebee with 5 or 6 dogs....she failed 3 of the tests and the other dogs were adopted out before she could meet them. She is a very dominant personality, and only a submissive dog would work with her. Alex and Freebee had their moments when he was first here, she won only because he backed down.... Please think it over before deciding to get rid of Sassy. I know you're mad at her, and it's a good thing the vet and trainer will see her soon, but understand that she was only being a dog. She may never allow you to have another dog, unless, like Laurel, that dog is very tolerant and submissive. **hugs** to you. Keep in touch with us please. Katy Quote
bk_blue Posted October 2, 2003 Posted October 2, 2003 Oh, that is awful, awful news. I'm so sorry. Like the others said, don't blame yourself... Quote
Sharpeigirl Posted October 3, 2003 Author Posted October 3, 2003 Thank for all your support from everyone. Sassy is on meds to settle down her aggersion. When we took her to the trainer, she lunged at her, snarling and bareing her teeth. Looks like we have some serious issues with Sassy now. We're going to try & see if we can work them out. The trainer suggests we get a prong collar for her :-? I want to do the gentle leader or Halti, which one would be best??? Quote
courtnek Posted October 3, 2003 Posted October 3, 2003 For aggression, the prong collar is best. You have better control. A Gentle or Halti wont restrain her if it becomes necessary.... but now I am concerned. Did she react this way ever to the trainer before? Is this normal? or not? Her behavior, if she didnt react this way before, is suspect. Atttacking Pepper is one thing, dogs dont always get along...but attacking a trainer she knows and is familiar with is another thing entirely. She may actually have a neurological disorder - brain malfunction, as it were.... If you can, have a brain scan done and see if (if this behavior towards the trainer is abnormal) if there is a physical reason for her behavior.... What did the vet say? Quote
Sharpeigirl Posted October 3, 2003 Author Posted October 3, 2003 The vet found nothing medically wrong with her. She's never been that friendly with the trainer, but this is the first time she's ever reacted like that. Tomorrow we go back to the vet for blood work. If that doesn't uncover anything then we go to specialists, but it's going to be extremely hard to pay for. She's just a differant dog after she attacked Pepper, it's like she "ON" all the time, she doesn't rest or sleep much. I'm really worried  Quote
Rowie-the-Pooh Posted October 3, 2003 Posted October 3, 2003 I'm so sorry you have to go through all this, Sharpeigirl! It must be a hard time for you... but I want you to know two things: A) You gave Pepper something that was never, ever given to her before. Love. She had never, as far as I know, felt the touch of a humans hand lovingly caress her muzzle. She had never known a warm bed, a fresh full meal, another canine friend. She had never slept in a crate, never heard loving words come out of a human's lips. You gave her all of these during her last moments of life. True, Sassy did attack her, but you could do nothing to prevent it, could you? you cannot keep beating yourself up because Sassy did what her instinct told her to do. This was God's will. She is at the rainbow bridge right now, waiting for you obediently, waiting for the only human that gave her love! B) Please, please, please, and I cannot stress this enough, please wait a bit before considering re-homing Sassy. Run a few tests with your trainer, take her home (with your trainer or Proffesional Behaviorist) and try to analyze her. Let her meet other dogs (supervised and on a leash of course) and watch how she reacts. Take notes. Maybe by taking day after day notes you will be able to recognize a pattern in her behavior? Good Luck! So sorry about dear, sweet, innocent Pepper! She will be missed! Quote
