Daisysmom Posted March 22, 2003 Posted March 22, 2003 Daisy is taking a turn for the worst, and my husband said he is "not putting any more money into her." "She is just a dog." :x She is pooping blood again and I don't know what to do for her :( I have some meds left from before she went into the hospital and I started to give her them again (just to bind her) and I am making more rice..... other than that, I don't know what to do!! Maybe if I tell him I will divorce him (only kidding) he will stop this crazy talk!!! I think we need to take her somewhere else, like a specialist, but there is no way we will be able to afford that!! I'm going to go back and read the post about her before, but does anyone know of a natural binding agent I can give her?? Quote
bk_blue Posted March 22, 2003 Posted March 22, 2003 I'm sorry to hear Daisy is not well again... I don't have any suggestions but I do feel for you. Quote
daisykatep Posted March 22, 2003 Posted March 22, 2003 You've got to get her to a vet, I'm sure if you told the vet your financal situation he would let you pay by installments. Problems like this can lead to the dog dying if not treated, Daisy is also probably in a lot of pain too but she can't tell you. If your husband was ill would you say"He's only a human" so it does't matter! I don't think so! Get her to the vet quickly before she suffers any more or worse, she dies. :( Quote
Daisysmom Posted March 22, 2003 Author Posted March 22, 2003 She has been to the vet, and just came back about 10 days ago from being hospitalized. I already called our vet and they gave me names of a specialists. Unfortunately, they only work M-F????? I think I can sustain her until Monday, and then I'm going to take her either to Wilmington or the University of Penn? Or maybe to the holistic vet. Quote
Guest roo Posted March 22, 2003 Posted March 22, 2003 HAVE YOU TRIED THE LIVE NATURAL YOGHURT YET. SHEEP OR GOATS MILK YOGHURT IS YOU CAN GET IT...... I am going to read back on all your posts please bear with me. Roo Quote
gooeydog Posted March 22, 2003 Posted March 22, 2003 You might want to contact IMOM, and see if they can help you with the financial part of the treatment. Their website is http://imom.org/. Good luck  Quote
Daisysmom Posted March 22, 2003 Author Posted March 22, 2003
You might want to contact IMOM
I think I did contact them a couple of years ago when we were really at our wit's end! They turned us down...... I'm going to try the yogurt for now. Quote
Daisysmom Posted March 22, 2003 Author Posted March 22, 2003 Just bought acidophilus yougert and slippery elm. I think I'll add lots of rice to her dinner too. Thanks Roo! (I also have a call into a holistic vet, but haven't heard back from her yet.) Quote

Malamum Posted March 22, 2003 Posted March 22, 2003 Unfortunately I don't have any advice, but just wanted to say that my thoughts are with you and especially Daisy. I hope you find a solution. Quote
alicat613 Posted March 23, 2003 Posted March 23, 2003 Oh I'm so sorry she's not doing well. This must be especially hard after recently losing your other dog (? I wasn't here then but read in archives I thought). My thoughts are with you guys, Ali Quote
gooeydog Posted March 23, 2003 Posted March 23, 2003
I think I did contact them a couple of years ago when we were really at our wit's end! They turned us down......
Sorry :-? Did you adopt her through a rescue? If so, maybe contact them, I know that some rescues set aside a little extra in case one of their adopters ends up with a dog with serious health issues, or maybe they could help you raise the money. That's the only other thing I can think of though. Quote
alicat613 Posted March 23, 2003 Posted March 23, 2003 Here is a site that lists holistic/homeopathic vets in your state, and lists their specialties. Some may be better than others. I'd try to choose one that has NU (nutrition), some herbs, and IVAS (shows that they study this rather than dabble)http://www.ahvma.org/states_and_directory/directory.html Generally they are higher priced for a visit (here $60-75 vs regular vets around $40), but the treatments are generally cheaper in the long run. Something like a large container of an herb may cost you $10-$20 but last months and months. Overall I've found this type of treatment to be very cheap. In Parker's lifetime (he's 7 mos) I would say we've spent about $150 tops on care, plus $200 for an emergency visit to another vet. What was it the vet diagnosed her as? I can't remember was it irritable bowel syndrome or inflammatory bowel disease? Do you have any specifics from the vet as to causes and tests they ran? What meds were given? It seems like the two conditions are pretty different, and the IBS has several types, depending on the cause and symptoms. How is Daisy today? Quote
Daisysmom Posted March 23, 2003 Author Posted March 23, 2003 Gooey, no. She wasn't a rescue. I got her from a co-worker who breeded one time. I am hopeful that what I am doing now maybe working, at least a little. Alicat, I saw that site, and I already made a call to the vet in Media, PA, but just left a detailed message. I guess I will hear from her on Monday. I gave Daisy a yam and yogurt breakfast sprinkled with slippery elm and a little EN on top. Yesterday she had rice and ground beef. She is in heaven!! She really loves the yogurt. She did poop (on the newspapers - she knows bynow) sometime over night, and my husband cleaned it up. So I have to wait until he gets up to ask if it was firming up or bloody. I hope this is all working, if not, she is atleast enjoying her meals (not that she didn't before, she's a LAB of course - - EAT - EAT - EAT :o ) Thanks  Quote
DogPaddle Posted March 23, 2003 Posted March 23, 2003
she is atleast enjoying her meals (not that she didn't before, she's a LAB of course - - EAT - EAT - EAT
Labs are enthuastic about everything they do but eating adds new meaning to the word. :D We are all pulling for you. Quote

courtnek Posted March 23, 2003 Posted March 23, 2003 I've often wondered if labs have part goldfish in them - they seem to be able to eat till they burst..... We're rooting for you and Daisy!! :D Quote
