Do your dogs stare at you while you eat??

It never fails... I go into the kitchen to cook and the dogs follow me. If I decide to eat in the living room on the couch I suddenly have three dogs sitting and staring. And not just staring, they (espically Benley) strech their necks out as far as possible and sniff! It drives me bonkers! Does anyone else's dog do this and is there a way to correct it?

My aunt and uncle taught their dogs the command "carpet". That means they have to go out of the kitchen and stay on the carpet.

If Buck is annoying while I'm trying to eat I just tell him to laydown. I let him get up when I'm done eating. It works fine. :-)

occasionally our two try to beg but most often they will lie asleep on the sofa beside you while you are eating ( our dining table had to go to make way for the xmas tree then the computer desk then the XX large dog crate!!)

No one beleives wus but I have acutally sat there with a dog each side of me as close as they can get without actially being on my knee and be absolutly out cold while I am tucking in to sausage and mash.

Yeah Lola loves to do that, she stare at us with her sad eyes like "can you see i'm about to break in tears?, gimme that food!"... but we have to ignore her and let her know who's the boss, or later will be us staring at her...

I dont believe I've ever owned a dog that DIDNT stare at me while I was eating, until trained not to...

You can start by givin them an "another room" command (like "carpet" was mentioned) and then making them adhere to it, with a short leash
attached around a chair, or a baby gate seperating the rooms. Make them obey the "lie down" command as well, incorporate it into your "Other room"
command while teaching it to them. Then, when they finally realize that they have to go lay down in another room until you're done eating, treat them alot. Maybe even give them a tidbit from your dinner, until they have learned that they need to leave you alone. I dont make mine leave the room, because their being there doesnt bother me, as long as they dont stare and beg. My command is "under" which means "lay under the table and dont bug me" while I'm eating...Freebee gets it, Laurel is still learning.

Funny that you post this because as of right now I'm eating a peice of pizza and zebra's head is in my lap and he is whining because he wants the pizza SOOOOOO bad!

Um, yes!!!! My three always stare!!! Chelsea isn't as bad as Daisy and Jake. I guess because they are all lab :o EAT, EAT, EAT We tell them to lay down. We let them stay in the room, but making them lay down isn't as bad. Jake's head is level with the kitchen table, so we really have to make sure he listens :-?

All of my dogs stare at me when I eat in front of them. I make them all sit (and let them drool  ) after I am finished I usually manage a few healthy scraps to put in each of their bowls (I eat very healthy so my dogs are not getting any left over junk food). It's our little ritual...I am alone :( so my dogs are my company at dinner time...in my opinon I'd rather have a bunch of dogs drooling over me than a husband drooling at models on the TV
I trained my Rottweiler to look at me using bait...she has such a high prey drive and wanted to teach her to look at me and not pay attention to other distractions...in order to teach her the command "look at me" I used to keep treats in my mouth to motivate her to look at my face
With my Newf's where they are used for show....I cannot put my hand in one of my pockets without them going into instant stack  that is one more thing I have a hard time doing with my dogs...if I put my hand near one of my pockets they all stop what they are doing...run over and either sit (dobe & rottie) or stack (Newf's) the breeder has the Newf's used to being baited.

Glad to know it's not just me! They act like they haven't had anything to eat in days! Not like they didn't eat usually just about an hour before we do! :D

Oh yes both mine stare. :-? It's really annoying too. Abby has this deadlock border collie stare that's like she's trying to hypnotize me ( :o  ) while Cracker goes for the cuteness factor and puts her head in u're lap, while seemingly making her eyes look even more big and brown.

Ah the joys of dog ownership

Well, it's mixed answer. My dogs do not stare at me while I am eating because it is not allowed. However, I do catch them sneaking glances at me and oh boy if I drop the tiniest crumb! You would then see Brittany and Candy keeping a sharp eye on each other to see which one will make the first move on that dropped bit.
What drives me nuts is that if I go visit my mom, all 3 will try to cosy up to her when she eats like they have no manners at all! Stare, drool, I have to get quite firm with them as I will not tolerate it. I tried to reason with them, said I don't stare at their food while they are eating but that seemed to go over their heads. 8)

Bk is quite good most of the time, he will just lie down and drool all over my feet. However it depends on the person. One time a few friends and my sister and I were having a post-party KFC lunch. I gave him a chip and he took it and spat it out. My sister gave him a chip and he ate it. Someone else gave him a chip and he ate it. I tried to give him another chip and he spat it out again. :x he knows he can get better out of me- I'm a sucker so I gave him a chicken nugget and he ate it

and where do they learn that? Do you suppose as wolves they stared at the Alpha trying to look as starved as possible???

I think that's one of those things we teach them...and we all fall for it a couple of times until we realize this is NOT a good thing....

the definitely have "the look" down pat....They really do manage to look like they're starving, even though we know they arent....

Jackie knows she's not going to get anything from the table, so she usually goes into the living room and hangs out on the sofa until I'm done.

Maya, on the other hand, is my shadow, and she follows me wherever I go. And if I'm eating, she sits right next to me for a few minutes, giving me "the look." I tell her "this is for me, not for you," and then she'll usually join Jackie in the living room until I'm done.

I'm on a low carb, high protein, low fat weight loss program, so I cook a lot of meals (I eat six meals a day). My girls aren't used to me cooking, so when they hear me getting food out of the fridge (they're usually outside when I'm cooking), they always come to the door and give me "the look" times two!
