1. you need to call the police and tell them you are training the dog to stop barking, but the neighbor refuses to understand. you will have to keep Pooh on a leash while you train him. come upwith one word (like QUIET!) said in a stern voice when he barks, then you can do a couple of things. first, yell quiet then spray him with a garden hose. not enough to make it fun, but a short, sharp spritz, strong enough to make him listen. then bring him inside. no fun outside for a while after every spritzing. then a little later, take him out again. when he stops barking when you yell quiet, then congratulate and treat him. you will need to use both treats and punishment in his case, until he learns thoroughly the meaning of the command. and obeys it every time. this seems harsh, but its in both your best interests before the neighbors make a scene about it. you can do this, you just HAVE to be both stern, and consistent. and it has to be done before winter, obviously.... 8)
2. **sigh** gotta love it when that happens. the best you can do is start desensitizing Pauly again, and after a while have hubby join in as well, so he's desensitized thoroughly to both of you. did he "play" at all the last time, while you were training? poor Pauly and Hubby. I'm sure he didnt mean it, he sounds like a really nice man from what you've told us.... :(
3. I'm sorry? I'm NOT penalizing the dog. OWNERS need to know the pack rules, and act accordingly....THEY ARE NOT PEOPLE IN FUR COATS... the more we treat our dogs like people, the nastier they will become...
4. I welcomed you at PF, but welcome here too. you never answered my question...ya gonna come photograph my dogs? yours are gorgeous, as usual...
5.

agree. There is no excuse. And in a perfect world, dogs and kids lay all over eachother, everywhere all the time - the couch, the bed, the dogs bed, the floor.. and the dog is never, never supposed to have any kind of adverse reaction...EVER cuz there is no excuse, right ? We wouldnt expect that kind of reliability from a child, a family member, etc. But we do expect it from our dogs. I am not saying its wrong, but its the social stigma attached to this type of behavior - when in reality we all have bad days, our dogs included.
As we should expect it from our dogs. There is no excuse for a dog biting a child, and if one does, it should be put down. If a dog reacts to a "bad day" by biting a child, there is a problem.
I disagree. As I disagree with most hard and fast, cut/dry rules regarding animal behavior. I am not saying that this dog should or should not be put down, but I have had to make that decision for a dog. It is never, never cut and dry. When any life hangs in the balance, I think we owe it to that life to consider all possibilities. I too disagree, simply because what we have been told about "kids being able to lay on the floor and do anything they want to dogs" is a stereotype. SOME dogs, yes. I could do that with my golden...I can do it with my hound, and any kid could...my lab? NADA...never. and Kyle was grown enough when I got Free (10) to understand how to treat a dog, what is correct and what is not. Now I rule with an iron fist, and possibly thats why I nor my son have never been bitten. but you cant rule with an iron fist if you dont know how. when Kyle was a baby I had 110 pound dog, acquired before he was born. If not for an iron fist, and pack rules, that dog would have had to go. but WITH it, he was trained to lay in a specific corner when Kyle was on the floor, and NOT MOVE unless he was told to. and he was never told to unless Kyle was in his swing, his high chair, or his playpen. no they did not roll around on the floor together, til Kyle was about 7....and had learned the proper way to treat an animal. no staring in the face. no pulling ANYTHING on the dog. no taunts, no smacks, no teasing. no issues. NILIF is the gentle, people orientated version of pack rules. real packs are not that nice to be in when you've done something wrong....my dogs will not lay teeth to family flesh, EVER, for any reason. I have always had big dogs, Laurel is my smallest at 65 lbs. teeth to flesh cannot be tolerated in dogs that size. so Hmmmmm...I have to both agree and disagree. yes, STAR needs some major re-evaluation, and possibly she can be trained, but not unless TX wants to become the iron fist necessary to do it. this dog thinks it is higher in her pack than her children. that cannot be tolerated. as far as letting kids roll on the floor with the dogs? Lassie is a motivator behind that thought, as are all TV and movie dogs with perfect personalities and no flaws....in real life? I wont take the chance.....
6. the tail splitting is common in labs and hounds. dogs with "whiplash tails". which both labs and hounds are known for, are often in danger of actuallysplitting the tail open banging it on walls and doors. my lab X doesnt have it, she has a more shepherd like fanned tail, but the hound does, and she has a lump on her tail from whiplash effect. the vet said not to worry about it unless it grows, and it hasnt.... the anal glands I have heard of, but never had a dog with the problem. also, if they found part of your FF in her poop, she ate it, and its trying to make it thru her digestive system. does she show any signs of notbeing able to go, straining, or loss of appetite? My Lab X ate something out in the yard.cost me 700.00 to have it surgically removed. she was throwing up and not eating however...
7. WHAT?????? :o :o :o :o :o I cannot imagine a child just "moaning" through being chewed up!!! I would think she would have been SCREAMING!!! I agree, theres much more to this story...mama may be an alcoholic or drug addict or something like that..... how horrible!!! poor baby.....
8. I am sorry, but I think its time to let her go. its unlikely, with an expensive medical complication, and a bite history (especially of a child) that she will ever really get adopted. with luck you might find a foster who will take her, but its unlikely she will ever have her forever home after all this. were it me,I would ask the vet to come out and you could hold her while she goes.... I am SOOO sorry, and this is such a hard decision..... :(
9. if arthritis or lyme, it could cause vomiting. the pain is very bad in both. get the lyme test done, I believe its a blood test. one other thing, sorry to have to say it, check for West Nile...its running rampant around here, and I heard dogs can get it too. :(
10. exertion wont cause a fever. if his temp was 102, isnt that normal for a dog? or somewhere nearby? if not normal(DO, where are you when I need you?) then he has an infection of some sort. they had no idea what happened to his tail? why it was bleeding? I'd be PO'd too....
11. actually, I learned the hard way that teenagers have more wisdom than most adults give them credit for while raising my son.... he is a very logical, rational young man. yes, he has made mistakes and I have let him make them, to teach him responsibility. we have butted heads a number of times over the years, and I hate to admit it, but sometimes he has proved me wrong. I stopped arguing when he once said to me "you KNOW I'm right, you just dont want to say it cuz I'm a KID...."....and I realized he was exactly correct. I stopped arguing and started listening from that point on.....our relationship immediately improved. I heard him out, with all of his reasons, and he heard me out with all of mine. we ended up being very able to compromise, something ALL adults need to learn, just to deal with other people, not just kids. he is now 18, working, learning, and teaching ME things. mostly about cars and stuff I at first said I didnt need to learn, and I was wrong. his teachings saved me an expensive car repair because I realized something was wrong before it got too bad. you're never too old to learn. I think this persons attitude is exceptionally wrong, having learned to know you from here, but perhaps another adult (Jess? MB? CC? K?) might want to point that out to her. there are times when an adult really does need to intervene for a kid, because of adultattitudes. not every teenager is clueless. its a very poor example of bias to believe so. I'd do it (I can hear K groaning as we speak) but I am not as knowledeable about Pits as some other people here. :evilbat: :evilbat:
12. sorry HF..close, but no cigar. its Constable On Patrol....police back thern were called "constables" London, England.... 8)
13. Buddy, we cant save them all. yes, maybe you should have stopped, and maybe not....a four lane highway with a curve is dangerous to stop on. I understand how you feel, but if something bad happens to you, who will take your place, and your love of animals, and do the good you do now? we all make mistakes. if we're smart, we learn from them. dont be hard on yourself......I am really glad puppers is ok. 8)
14. crazy? I'm NOT crazy...(bitchy? yes) you guys are all watching me, and sneaking into my mind and dreams, and plotting against me....I'm NOT crazy!!!    you all hate me. no one answered my question, its a conspiracy, I know it!!   seriously, isnt merle-to-merle bad? or are Pit Bulls different? 8) I KNOW who you are...you cant get me.... :evilbat:
15. ok "fuzz" trivia....without CHEATING and looking it up, who can tell me where the word COP originally came from? 8)
16. put Stealth in a sit, you can use NILIF to train tricks too. pick up his paw, say SHAKE, shake it, and then treat. nothing too special, just a tiny thing. after a few trials of this, hold out your hand, and treat, and say SHAKE. dont treat him till he actually lifts his paw and hands it to you. after a few repititions he'll get it. as he gets better, make the treats better, til he has it down pat. I taught mine "speak" this way. they would start to bark and I would yell SPEAK!! and treat them. food hounds that they both are (lab and hound...gluttons of the dog world) they picked it up in about 3 tries...
17. some people cant be helped...but Merle to Merle? forgive my stupidy but isnt that a recipe for disaster? dont dogs go deaf from that combination? or does that not affect Pits like it does some other breeds? :o :o
18. I give mine hot dogs....    (just kidding)

22. ask Dana and Girl if they would be interested in paying a sitter to come stay with your dogs while your gone. then find a REALLY expensive one, who is licensed, and bonded, and insured..... :evilbat: :evilbat: :evilbat: :evilbat: yes, I'm evil. I know....
