I am going to SLAP MY NEIGHBOR upside the head!!!
courtnek replied to courtnek's topic in Everything about dogs
I made a sign, that says both DOGS IN YARD and underneath it NO TRESSPASSING and hung it up facing their yard but on my side of the fence. also hung one on the main gate.... the police said this will cover my liability, since neither of my dogs are breed specific to so-called "attack dogs" and neither have shown any aggression towards the kids. he also said definitely call if they do it again. it will remain on record, so if something bad happens, they will know that I tried repeatedly to stop it. sheesh......why are people so stupid? :o  -
How much does the general public need to know?

I think there's a "sales rep" side to this coin as well, not always easy to do. you dont necessarily have to "lecture" about the harshness of spaying and neutering, but if you mention it like a sales pitch (yea, this one is SOOO cute, part GSD/Pit, but the owners of the mom and dad didnt neuter them, so here we are. they really are adorable and well behaved....oh, you have a multiple pet/cat/ferret household? this one may not be for you, we wont know til she's older of course....") you can give them the info without sounding like you are lecturing or calling the owners bad....I believe with Pits the possibility of aggression towards other animals SHOULD be mentioned, and maybe a flyer handed out about the history of Pits and their roots and purposes.... I would just hate to see a tragedy because the owners werent informed. that would definitely hurt the shelter involved... :( -
oh man its a bad one. I hope they are already out and moving elsewhere ahead of it. eye is supposed to hit tomorrow, then travel well inland, and the rain and such is even supposed to get to the great lakes. we are under flood watches by mid-late week... I have friends that live there.....

around here we have been told by the police that a "Beware of Dog" sign actually opens you up to liability, because you are openly admitting you have a dangerous dog. they suggested something like "Dog(s) In Yard", which is a flat statement. doesnt say the dogs are dangerous or not. I am SOOOO sick of politically correct..... the problem with these kids is that their backyard fence backs upto mine. they play ball in the yard and it flies over the fence. I have told them that if the dogs are out that means I'm home. call me and I'll retrieve your toys for you. the littlest one comes to the door. the older two dont. well, after reading all the replies I called the guy back and said "your kids are tresspassing....if they climb the fence again I WILL have to call the police, for their safety and my potential liability because of this...." and he went off about how he wouldnt sue over something like that, blah blah blah....and I just said "not taking the chance. they climb over again and I'm calling the police. that makes YOU liable for disciplinary action because THEY are minors....."he said I was being "very unneighborly", so I said "your kids climbing my fence to get in my yard is both unneighborly, and ILLEGAL. They're tresspassing. keep them on YOUR side of the fence from now on...." he walked away grumbling. this morning his wife caught me out in the yard and said she couldnt believe I had talked to "her Tom" that way.... so I just said "YOUR Tom, and YOUR kids are breaking the law. I have asked nicely repeatedly, and you have all ignored me, so now, if necessary, I will take it up in court. have a nice day" and I went inside with the dogs... sheesh....its a simple concept. what part of NO do you not understand?    -
I have told him REPEATEDLY...not to have his kids climb the fence to get their balls out of my yard....I have given him my number, and my cell phone, and said "come to the door if I dont answer. I will get the balls for you..." my dogs wont hurt him, but I want to teach them to not do this. someone elses dog MIGHT... one of his kids was in the yard when I let the dogs out., couldnt see him from the door. of course, Free runs right up, and scares the crap outta the poor kid...Laurel runs up as well, but stands still...the kid bursts out in tears..... I took him aside and explained why he should never climb a fence to get a ball in a household where there are dogs...just to be safe.... he petted Free and Laurel, and went on his way (again, over the fence) WHAT IS WRONG WITH PARENTS??? if my dogs were dangerous, **I** would be the one held responsible... I just got off the phone with his dad, who's ears are ringing, I'm sure. HOW MANY times do I have to tell you NOT to let your kids do this? ARE YOU DEAF?????? MY dogs WONT hurt them...whos to say someone elses WONT? ARRGGHHHHHHH

everything I was going to say has been said...however, on reflection, I wonder if there is some underlying issue with him, something going on in his life, that made him turn on you like that. To me, it sounds like he "snapped"....and snapped big time. I am not excusing him, just looking for a better means to approach this issue with him. and yes, it must be approached. the fact that he called you tells me he knew right off the bat he was wrong, and is now trying to make it up. again, no excuse, but it might help to try to find out what his REAL issue is, when you talk to him. yes, make sure you tell him you wont tolerate this kind of behavior, but then maybe try to find out what CAUSED it. I feel a "hole" here, somewhere in his experiences. dont ask me how I know. I am cursed with this understanding.... I have a sign on my back (invisible) that says "tell me your troubles..."and everyone does. whether I want to know or not appears to be irrelevant. but thats the feeling I'm getting from this. hang in there HF. I really think there is more behind this than just you... again, dont ask me how I know...  -
no its not true. Gonorrhea is a sexually transmitted disease. to my knowledge there is no other way to get it. back in the old days it was called VD (venereal disease). it is not common anymore, since antibiotics cleans it up nicely. siphylus was the other one. so all dogs would have to have sex with a dog who had the big G to get it. not likely, nor true. where do people come UP with stuff like this?

no. there is down there, some fur, but a big ring thats darker than the skin,. I cut the other one, same thing as well.... :o
-
after...
-
on the lower left flank...just above the left leg, about 3 inches, and its about 2 inches wide, which is what I had to cut out. it was hurting him. he would grab it with his teeth and pull. then cry. he was picking at it constantly. he now has two more, smaller ones, on his right flank.....I'm afraid to cut them out... those are not yet pressing against the skin,. should I cut them? :o :o :o he wont let me brush him, even with my cat nodule brush.. :o
-
I cut a mat out of Ford. he WONT be brushed. period. this was a few months ago. it was right up on his skin, and bothering him. I had to do three cuts, closer and closer, but got it out. he stopped trying to yank it out on his own (and then crying) but then the hair never grew back!!! its a majot bald spot!! vet says he's fine, no ringworm or anything...why didnt it grow back??? it doesnt bother him, or hurt...its just a big bald spot.... :o :o

[quote name='behle']I believe there's nothing harder than a rott's head! My Max (rest his soul) once dented the fender of our car when trying to chase a ball. He swung his head around and WHAM! ok let me straighten this out. in all honesty, I agree with both sides (nice of me, right? 8) ) I see Hmmmms point, but dont necessarily agree with all of it. if the owner of the dog is not able, or willing, to put the time in to demote it and make it behave, then yes, if it is therefore unadoptable, it should be put down. with a bite history, and multiple counts of aggression, it is unlikely to find a home. it should not have to live in a cage. let it go, give it peace..... if the person who owns the dog is willing, and able, to put on the iron fist and make the dog behave, then no, it does not need to be put down. precautions have to be taken, to insure the safety of the children, but it can be done. I know. I've done it, with friends dogs who got "above themselves..." I broke one who wouldnt let the husband sleep in his own bed. (LLLOOONNNG story...) there are two sides to every story. this CAN be done, the question is, can TX do it, or is she willing to?...thats the real decision... 8)

so do I. or start up an obnoxious power tool, like a saw...as long as you are not breaking local noise laws, nothing they can do. brilliant suggestions... :evilbat:

if its only squirrels, I have heard of a unique squirrel stopping technique, also using water. if you have a long garden hose, mount it up in the tree where he barks at the squirrels. let him out, let him bark, but as soon as he starts, turn the hose on. this makes the dog think the tree or the squirrels is what is reacting, not you. turn it off right away, and wait, when he starts to bark, squirt him again. he will eventually put the water together with the tree/squirrels, and stop barking. you have to catch him every time tho or it wont have the effectiveness you need. 8)

good timing for this thread...free just "chirped"....never did that before. I was having a somewhat serious conversation with my son (over something that happened to him at work) and giving some advice on what to do about it, when she got in between us, looked at me, and chirped...I guess it had the desired affect, we both busted out laughing...

y'know, I'll never understand that. people buy a house, where they can see/hear/tell there's a dog, then yell at the dog owner when the dogs barks...DOGS BARK.....unless its incessant or 24/7, GET OVER IT. if you hate dogs that much, why did you buy a house next door to one??? still, its in your best interests to get Pooh trained. some people are born stupid and never grow out of it.... :evilbat:
-
actually, as much as I agree with you, noise codes usually cover things like power tools and lawn mowers, and stereo's and such. dog barking falls under a nuisance code usually. its worth looking into, because I agree, at 11:45 in the morning most people are up and about, and if Pooh is only barking for a few minutes it shouldnt be an issue. I'll lend her neighbors the two Chi's next door if she wants to know what nuisance barking is!! their owner is an idiot.....

you need to call the police and tell them you are training the dog to stop barking, but the neighbor refuses to understand. you will have to keep Pooh on a leash while you train him. come upwith one word (like QUIET!) said in a stern voice when he barks, then you can do a couple of things. first, yell quiet then spray him with a garden hose. not enough to make it fun, but a short, sharp spritz, strong enough to make him listen. then bring him inside. no fun outside for a while after every spritzing. then a little later, take him out again. when he stops barking when you yell quiet, then congratulate and treat him. you will need to use both treats and punishment in his case, until he learns thoroughly the meaning of the command. and obeys it every time. this seems harsh, but its in both your best interests before the neighbors make a scene about it. you can do this, you just HAVE to be both stern, and consistent. and it has to be done before winter, obviously.... 8)
