Guest Anonymous Posted October 9, 2004 Share Posted October 9, 2004 This may be a long post but if you are interested in inexpensive, no preservative, easy to make, high protein, muscle building treats, for training, or, just to let your dog know how much you love them...please view this cause it took me awhile to do haha If you do not like any of the listed ingredients, or do not have them in your area, you can substitute to your preference. Blitz' Home Baked Liver Bites Blitz says they're barktabuloussSssSssSSsSs! [b]What you will need.[/b] One blender One electric hand mixer or large bowl mixer One 13x9 inch baking pan I use glass One large mixing bowl One box of Jiffy Corn Muffin Mix One pound of raw beef or chicken liver. If you want to make the entire pound of liver which is what I do, you will obviously need double what is listed, or, you can use the entire pound for one batch instead of two. 1/3 cup of milk 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil 1 tablespoon of garlic salt or you can use a clove or two of fresh garlic [img]http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v389/blitzkriegbopsbt/9e750743.jpg[/img] [b]Step #1[/b] Preheat oven to 350f degrees Grease or butter 13x9 inch baking pan so treats will not stick to pan Empty box of Jiffy Corn Muffin Mix into large mixing bowl [img]http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v389/blitzkriegbopsbt/5c405386.jpg[/img] [img]http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v389/blitzkriegbopsbt/760cd39e.jpg[/img] [b]Step #2[/b] Add liver, milk, oil and garlic to blender Blend a few minutes until you have a well blended liquid with no chunks of liver [b]Step #3[/b] Add the well blended liver mixture to the bowl with the Jiffy Corn Muffin [img]http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v389/blitzkriegbopsbt/085ea091.jpg[/img] [b]Step #4[/b] Use the electric hand mixer or large bowl mixer to mix the liver mixture and the Jiffy Corn Muffin Mix. Remove from oven and let cool. Cut into strips and whatever size pieces you like. Put in sandwich bags and store in refrigerator (will stay fresh for weeks) Now make your furkids work for them and let Blitz and I know how your furkids respond to them! These treats are also high protein and keep a nice amount of muscle on Blitz. Garlic helps keep fleas away and well...every dog I have given them to just loves them! imported_Kat Posted October 10, 2004 Share Posted October 10, 2004 I used to use liver cake to train with Meg, but the smell is totally foul and really turns me so she settles for dry kibble that won't stink out my pocket. I can remember at Crufts 3 years ago I was in an Obedience comp and we were made to show our hands to the judge before entering. I'll have to use olive oil (it's all we have) and will subtitute the jiffy with straight corn meal because Buddy doesn't need the sugar calories. Thanks and I'll let you know how it goes! Guest Anonymous Posted October 11, 2004 Share Posted October 11, 2004 desertlady, if you don't want to use the corn muffin mix because of sugar, you can try corn meal or whole grain flour and add the flour to the blended mix of liver, milk, egg, oil and garlic and use the hand mixer, until you have a mixture that isn't too thin or too thick...you should be able to pour most of it and use a spatula or spoon to scoop out the rest. In "some" animals milk products may cause diarrhea. Even with humans milk products are the #1 reason behind allergies and other such problems (ie ear aches etc.). Some people cannot tolerate lactose either. Most animals when they are weaned never drink or have a need for milk again in their adult life. :wink: I give my dogs cheese and milk (left over from cereal in morning) my dogs seem to do AOK with lactose in small quanities. Some people cannot tolerate lactose either.[/quote] the key question is - does the dairy product in question even contain lactose. fermented products, such as yogurt or cottage cheese do not contain lactose because the bacteria have converted it already. even most types of cheese do not contain any lactose, or only traces. I don't know how I'm going to go blending the liver - I may vomit. If not I think I will at least stand there heaving :wink: :wink: My dogs have offal night once a week. Liver nights are the worst. The only instances where I would advise against cheese would be for animals that have severe allergies as dairy products can make a situation worse.
