The neighbours had their dogs out in the common area so I took Kavik out to play loose and then when he was done put him in and took Zaphod out on the leash to play.
The neighbour kept going on about how thin my boys were and "are his hips supposed to look like that." My boys a very lean true but they are healthy she just doesn't recognize hips because you can't see her dog is covered in a thick padding of fat! He doesn't even have a little tummy tuck or any narrowing of the waist at all, he can only run for 1 min at a time! Then she started in on how can Zaphod get any excercise if I don't let him off the leash - they just don't get it - Zaphod isn't allowed off the leash because he can't be trusted - to heck with excercise it will do him no good if he gets squashed by a truck or gets spooked by a kid or a dog and gets into a fight and gets put down. Besides I walk him 1-2 times a day, he plays in the yard sometimes with me, sometimes with Kavik, he plays in the house, we go to the beach or the park 2-3x a week where we find a nice deserted spot and he plays on a long lead! He is in better shape than her dog - he can nearly keep up to Kavik (and darn strong for a 55lb/25kg boy - nearly pulled my arm out of my socket today - still hurts.)
Stupid people with fat dogs who would let an partly trained dog with socialization issues run loose.

Agreed. There are way too many fat dogs around! Most people wouldn't recognise a healthy-weight dog if it came up and bit them on the nose. Dogs aren't designed to carry lots of extra kilos, ESPECIALLY working dogs eg BCs, ACDs, Kelpies. They are designed to WORK and like any athlete, if they carry too much weight they don't work as well.

I definately agree.
Kavik is around 28lbs/13kgs - I work that out to 7lbs or just over 3kgs per hip/shoulder - with all the jumping, skulking and running he does I figure that's good.
I admit Zaphod could stand to fill out a bit but he's an adolescent dog, he is lanky and with Labs tendency to be tanks I am happier to see him lean rather then hefty.
Thanks.

I have to agree - Freebee has to be watched carefully, or she'd eat til she burst!! Labs especially should not be heavy on the hindquarters, and should have at least a marginally tucked waist, because of their tendency to hip displacia. A fat lab is only going to have more hip problems because of the extra weight. So you keep up with what you're doing DP, and
tell the rude neighbor from me, in a sweet voice, "I keep them on the thin side, because I want them to live as long as possible.....y'know, fat dogs have heart and hip problems, just like fat people...." then just smile and walk away. Let her stew on THAT for awhile....

Oh Courtnek that is soooo good! :evilbat:

It's ok DP, loads of nieghbors are like that...ignorant, rude...!! The common human being these days! Only us dog lovers are normal( if you can call us that)!

Courtneck, I was just going to say that! Slightly under weight dogs live longer and are healthier than other dogs.
Dogpaddle, don't let her get to you, she wont be so cocky when her dog is at the vet with heart desease, diabetes and joint problems.

Thanks everyone.
I'm much happier to have you guys agree with me on the appropriate weight for a dog than my neighbour. Besides in a month or so maybe I won't have to see her anymore - might get that new job and move

people can be stupid.

I just ran into this old lady one day, and she jumped off her bike and started to ask questions.

lady: are these dogs those.. those..
me: huskies?? yes.
lady: oh yes, those. but what on earth are you doing outside with them?
me: :o
lady: they are winter-dogs, how on earth can you walk them during the summer???
me:

so, summa summarum, i'm obviously not allowed to walk my "winter dogs" during the summer. how stupid of me not to realize that until the wise lady told me the facts!

People can be so ignorant! That lady didn't even know the name of the breed! :x Some people think they know everything about dogs...!! Didn't they think we did all the research and homework before purchasing/rescueing our dogs? :x Ughhh!

I would just like to add a scientific tid bit for everyone to think about......There have been MANY scientific studies about aging, since everyone would like to live longer, right? Can anyone guess the ONE factor that seems so far to increase life span in rodents and primates?

You guessed it, Caloric restriction. There is also TONS of good evidence to suggest that excess fat leads to dramatic increases in cancer. All of these things happen in people as well as lab animals I am afraid, which is why I have been on a diet for the last 10 years

Riesa02 - Yes, you see I have learned from my stupid neighbour that I must also defer to the opinion of others who either know nothing about my dogs, know nothing about dogs, think they know about dogs or once knew someone who lived beside a breeder, but feel it is their duty to hold forth on how they should be cared for.

I've also heard comments about how cruel I am to keep my Alaskans outside- They all have insulated houses with removable "windows" screened , of course! for when summer rolls around. . On winter days when it is above 0 F, most of them sleep outside anyway, oblivious to the house. Each house is packed with straw when the weather turns chilly, but they normally dig it all out and sleep on it outside. :-? . When we are training or racing, they have more chance of becoming overheated than too cold, but just in case we have fleece jackets for the ones with shorter coats if it ever is super cold.

I COULD shave my sibes, (lord forbit, during the fur shedding I DREAM about it... ) but then they'd freeze during the winter (as the first snow falls usually during october)

DP--yes I definately think he is happier !!
He was running around like a mad thing tonight whereas usually he gets exhausted very quickly and flakes out panting !!
In fact it was all lumpy so he is even shorter now !!!
I will get pictures when they are here again he looks soooooo funny !!

OMD! That is how Rowie looked after the vets needed to cut all her fur off because of the ticks! So Rowie's not alone...

I also heard that shavind doesn't help... I also heard that shaving a dogs fur can be really bad for the coat and that it will rarely grow back again? :-? Dunno if it's just in a certain breed or in all breeds... I don't shave Rowie's fur just to make sure...

I think in some ways shaving helps the dog to cool off (as in humen - coat on - coat off), but as dogs sweat through their paws and tongue, I think wetting their paws and stomach helps too if you dont want to shave your dog, or to make them wear a wet towel or t-shirt. We had really hot july here (believe it or now  ) and I did wet their paws and stomach daily, and it seemed to help them a bit.
