Bensam
The following (it's long!) is the list of Councils in one State here, Queensland, which have brought in these stupid dog breed laws. Other States are gradually sneaking in bans on various breeds, never mind the deed, just ban the breed  Our Kennel Control Assoc. appears to be a toothless tiger, allowing all sorts of restrictions being made legal and the main ones penalised are those who try to do the right thing. A bit more attention to puppy farms and 'designer' dog breeders would probably do more good....................................................................................... All councils listed here..that have restrictions, bans or have breeds classed as DD Type of declaration whether it be Dangerous or Prohibited or Restricted Key = DD (Dangerous Dog) P (Prohibited) R (Restricted) *Mount Morgan Shire Council has also classed any dog as dangerous that is 60 or more kilos in weight - A height of more than 1100mm ((44 inches) it does not state where measurement to be taken from) - Any dog used for hunting of wild game (again not stated as currently or originally bred to) They have also misspelt Maremma. **Mackay City Council has misspelt Fila Brasiliero & Only classed the Tosa as DD ***Burnett Shire has misspelt Dogo Argentino in their law. ****Chinchilla Shire has misspelt the Fila and Dogo in its law. bk_blue
:x Wasn't a little kid just mauled by a Lab or Golden (yes, the breed "least likely to" :-? ) in QLD recently??? Don't see them on the list. Bloody pack of regressive rednecks (I am allowed to badmouth banana-benders because my mum is one! ). Is there anything we can do? ellieangel
I can't believe these restrictions ! Great danes !!! are you mad !!!! :o all the ones I've ever met have been great big soppy dogs who wouldn't hurt a fly !!! Is this just because of their size ?? Does this mean these breeds have to be muzzled and kept on a lead in public ??
snowpaws
This is so rediculous it's almost funny! Great Dane, Rhodesian Ridgeback, and Neo's??? Whatever!?

Bensam
Crazy, isn't it! The EDBA (Endangered Dog Breeds Assoc) are trying to fight these stupid laws but it's an uphill battle. I am probably one of those complacant ones having only small dogs but it's even starting to scare me. Our Government is bringing in all these new laws and apparently giving individual Councils the power to interrupt them in their own way. Queensalnd have gone overboard and apparently Western Aussie are also getting on the band wagon. I believe some Councils in Melbourne area are bringing in some bans as well. My last Dog Reg. account from my local shire had a new attachment - "Restricted Breeds Declaration" Am. Pit Bull Terrier, Dogo Argentino, Fila Brassiliero, Japanese Tosa. You have to sign a declaration stating you do not own or have these breeds on your property. Queried the local ranger and he said there weren't any Fila or Tosa in Aussie. Just shows what they know!!! Some Q'land owners have had dogs PTS after the supposedly expert identification just because of breed, others have sent their dogs interstate to escape this ridiculous situation. I don't know how anyone can keep up with what's going on apart from attending every Gov. sitting and Council meeting to hear what is being done without consultation with people who know. Again our Kennel Assoc's appear to be sitting on their butts. BK it's a bit like the dingo situation, there doesn't appear to be anyone who knows better or cares in high places. PS - New Zealand is also bring in 'Banned Breeds' legislation.
bk_blue
Is there *anything* we can do???? Why is it when governments do stupid things we feel so enraged and yet so helpless??? :-? Now Bensam, would you join me if I staged a protest march against BSL...
dogwoman
Greyhounds??? Heehaa, I don't believe it. I have had Bull Breed for over 20 years and run a rescue. I got mauled last year and required nearly 30 stitches. But NO by a Bull Breed but by a LABRADOR. There you go... Sarah
Bensam
BJ I think my days of fighting for causes is over. There is just so much stupidity in the world, one wonders what the coming years hold. There's no loyalty in the workplace, promises are broken, the 'Look after yourself, brother, I'm alright' attitude disgusts me. Can you tell I'm on a downer :( It's Anzac day here with the services, marches, etc. and our soldiers in Iraq. A day for remembrance of a lot of places, people and happenings. TOMORROW IS ANOTHER DAY :drinking: I think all us dog folk should just buy a big island and go there! Anyone want to buy Australia?
ellieangel
Bensam, I totally agree with everything you said ! The world is in a sad state ! :( Please tell me! what happens to the dogs of these breed types already residing in these areas when the new legislations are brought in ? Do they have do be muzzled in public or euthanased or what ? I think some of the breeds mentioned on here beggars belief :o some MAY be wise i don't really have experience of all of these breeds :-? but still only for on lead kinds of restrictions nothing harsher than that is really ever necessary is it ? :(
bk_blue
There's an island for sale in Tassie, Bensam, for $1.7 million I think, don't know if it's been sold though. It's got guest houses, roads, everything you could possibly need- if only... :D
Bensam
I believe a number of the prohibited breeds have been PTS. even although they may be pets with no reason for this except they are identified as a particular breed, even this id. can be questionable as some of the bully breeds can be hard to put a positive breed name to and there aren't really any experts here in this field, so can be a bit hit and miss. I am waiting for our Ranger to call here as he often does for a cuppa when down this way and I've got that "Pick the Pit" ready to show him. Then there are severe guidelines for fencing, notices to be erected and muzzle and leash laws. Brat, BK just checked my bank balance, just a bit short, have to wait till next pension day!
ellieangel
Sad to hear that innocent doggies are losing their lives  just because of their breed. What dogs do you have are any of those 'borderline' breeds ? There is quite a lot of paranoia over here about certain breeds but not an awful lot af legislation. Bensam
Over many years I have had a number of different breeds but now only have 2 Miniature Pinschers, recently lost my lovely Border Terrier, Ben, so these laws don't effect me AT THE MOMENT but where is it going to stop? Keep your eyes and ears open for any hint of BSL over there, it tends to be brought in quietly and suddenly there it is!

I ran into one of the girls from dog training while I was out the other night. I didn't regodnise her until she said "my dog and Lily are best friends!!!", then I remembered, her dog is the only dog at training that Lily doesn't try to fight. I asked her weather she got him from a breeder or something, he's the most gorgeous Pitt I've ever seen, she told me she found him running down the middle of the road in queensland. She said she thought he was a staffie cross with some am staff in him, I havn't seen many pitts in real life but I do know a pitt when I see it, I picked it from that pick the pitt site first go and I know her dog is a Pitt. I told her and she's like "oh really! I never would have guessed!". I told her about the BSL in Queensland and she agreed he'd probably been let go to escape having to be pts or something terrible like that. He's a gorgeous dog, I can't see any other reason why he would have been on the street! Good thing she didn't take him to the pound though because he wouldn't have been there more than a minute before getting the needle, not even half a chance to prove his worth :(
ellieangel
Bensam, I think you're probably right I think it's just a matter of time before we start to get harsher legislation. It's so sad :( I keep thinking of all the dogs I know that it would probably affect.
