Rowie-the-Pooh Posted March 16, 2003 Posted March 16, 2003 EEK! Feel really bad, sad, and insecure now and need some help from my buddies! Ok, so here it goes, for the last couple of months, my mom kept telling me that Rowie's right eye looked different from her left. Ofcourse I checked, and double checked, nothing seemed to be wrong! :-? Ok, so every Friday, me, Rowie, and my Aunt go on this LONG walk with other people to wierd places where there is little civilization. Well, on Friday, as usual, we went, I packed alot of water and treats with me inculding luch and a toy just incase. And of we went on the walk. It was quite windy actually, and there was alotta sand, but non of the other dogs seemed irritated nieher did Rowie. Ok, everything fine till here. We come back home, and give Rowie a hose down and bathe her paws and check for burrs and such. Evrything is doing A OK. So I leave for my uncles house(Rowie has the rest of the family at home with her, I never keep her unsupervised at home don't worry  ) and have a fun time with my cousins and thier irritating dog, Blackie. After a while, at dinner time, I go back home. I am greeted with Rowie at the gate as usual(she has never failed to meet me at the gate when I go out ever since we got her :D ) and I ring the intercom, my mother picks up the phone, and buzzez me inside. Ok, here's the spooky part, I come inside(remmember it is at night) and Rowies right eye is RED! :o :o :o Great shock for me! I was about to faint, and I called my mother outside, and show her Rowie's eye. Now, Rowie is an inside dog ofcourse, but according to my mother, had been playing outside and doing her Rowie bussiness. So, they didn't notice her eye. I take her into the house, into the light, and her eye is back to normal. :-? It turned out to be the moon! But, just in case, I washed BOTH of Rowie's eyes THOUROGHLY and then did a couple of tests to make sure her eyes where OK. Well, in the morning her eye seems OK, but notice that it has this glassy look, and the pupil is BIGGER than her normal eye! :o :o :o EEK! Now I feel like a loser, a total loser. My mother was RIGHT! There WAS something wrong with her eye but I was too ignorant to believe her! I'm thinking that this could be some kind of genetic defect? Maybe passed on by her parents? But she comes from REALLY GOOD breeding...maybe somethings wrong with eye? Maybe it was the walk? She picked up something maybe? I feel like I have tottaly beytrayed my duties as a responsible owner! Rowie relies on ME to keep her fit and healthy and to notice if somethings wrong! My mother keeps reassuring me that it's ok, and that it's probably nothing... But just to make sure, we're gonna take Rowie to the vet...you never know. it could be seriuos! :o Any comments? What should I do? I know that the eye is a sensative tissue and it may be something seriouse! Oh, and for those of you who don't know, Rowie is a year and 2 months. She is a pure bred Golden Retriever, and Goldens are known for ALOT of genetic diseases...like Hip Dysplasia, diebietes...etc. Please Help! :o Oh, an sorry for all the grammer mistakes, and spelling mistakes!! It's REALLY late here, and I'm soooo worried about Rowie that I can't even type!! :o Plus, it's a REALLY long post(I apologize for that) and I'm too lazy to go and find the mistakes! Thanks.... Rowie-the-Pooh  Quote
behle Posted March 16, 2003 Posted March 16, 2003 Rowie - I can see you are seriously upset about this. The best thing to do is get her to the vet as soon as possible, so that eye can have a thorough check by someone who has the knowledge and resources to deal with it. Please don't beat yourself up about this regardless of the outcome. Hindsight is always 20/20. You provide excellent care to the best of your ability; you are not a veterinarian who has the benefit of training and the expertise born of experience! Just take her in and get it checked out! We will all be sending positive thoughts your way. You can bet on it! Quote
mouseatthebusstop Posted March 16, 2003 Posted March 16, 2003 don't worry you are doing the right thing taking her to the vet as soon as you are worried. Let us know how she goes on :D Quote
Guest Anonymous Posted March 16, 2003 Posted March 16, 2003 AWWE! I'm sending positive thoughts your way, hopefully your Rowiemister is okay! Let us know once you get back from the vet kay? Like Behle said, don't beat yourself up about it, it's not your fault. You take exellent care of your pooch, and only want the best for her! Accidents and things uncontrolable like genetic defects are UNCONTROLABLE! (although I do know that feeling of having your mom right and you wrong! [read my post "My dog's younger then I thought!"]) Hope all goes well!! Quote
Prairie_Gurl Posted March 16, 2003 Posted March 16, 2003 Don't beat yourself up over it, it's not your falt. You're a very responsible dog owner and we all know you adore (sp) your doggy. It's a good idea to take her to the vet just to make sure everything is Ok though. Let us know what's goin on, ok??? Quote
courtnek Posted March 17, 2003 Posted March 17, 2003 It's ok Rowie - dont beat yourself up. Take her to the vet and have her examined. It could be nothing, but it's best to check. I had a purebred G/R and weird things happen to them. Mine used to EAT rocks (literally - chewed them up and swallowed them) and the vet found a mineral deficiency..... Let us know what happens, OK? Rowie-the-Pooh Posted March 17, 2003 Author Posted March 17, 2003 Awww! Thanks soo much guys!! :D I always knew I could count on Dogo for support! Ok, now the update, Rowie's eye is much better now! :D *Big sigh of relief* And it doesn't seem to bother her...her eye was only red cuz of the moon reflecting it, but still it was only that eye and that worries me. :-? We scheduled a vet appoinetment, so I have a HUGE wieght lifted of my shoulders! :D Just to be careful, I'm keeping her inside away from the dust, and washing it repeatedly with water. It's the most I can do until we go to the vets. :-? K: I checked the website out, and no Rowie's eye isn't like that, as I said before her eye was only reflecting the moonlight  thanks for the website though, I'll bookmark it just in case! :D Hazel: Uhg! Don't you hate it when you lose to your parents? 'Specially your mom? :x My mom kept repeating:"I told you so, I told you so"!! :x  I read your Topic 'bout Hazel before posting my Topic and I knew exactly how you felt! :D Again, thanks everyone for your support!! :D :D :D mwaah! :D :D :D I'll keep you updated, and tell you what the vet says ASAP!! :D :D Quote
Malamum Posted March 18, 2003 Posted March 18, 2003 Hope it turns out to be nothing. Let us know how you go at the vet. You sound like a fantastic dog owner - don't beat yourself up. Quote

Rowie-the-Pooh Posted March 20, 2003 Author Posted March 20, 2003 Heyy guys! Sorry! Thanx soo much again for your support! :D Ok UPDATE: Rowie's eye is MUCH MUCH better! :D I'm so relieved! It's like a HUGE wieght off my shoulders is gone, ya know? Anyway, the vet appointment is next week! :x We live in a small town with only one vet, so the vet is usually bursting with people, and for an appointment you need to call some time in advance. Like for Rowie's spaying operation, I had to make the appointment a MONTH before! :o Anyway, her eye is doind MUCH better...I'm starting to think maybe I was over reacting? I mean it's perfectly fine now! Except it looks a bit different....Maybe it was the sand from the wind? Well, anyway, a vet chuckup wouldn't hurt! :D thank you all SO much or your care and support, you're all soo sweeet and kind! Rowie thanks you all! :D I will keep you updated! :D Rowie-the-Pooh  Quote
