yellowlabsrule Posted December 10, 2002 Posted December 10, 2002 I was wondering what everyone feeds and how much it costs. Thanks! Quote
Bentley's Dad Posted December 10, 2002 Posted December 10, 2002 canned food is for cats and really really old dogs :P Quote
Aroura Posted December 10, 2002 Posted December 10, 2002
canned food is for cats and really really old dogs :P
??? I always used to feed my dogs on canned food, until I started feeding them raw meat instead. Our cats get raw meat too, its far superior than anything you can get in a can. Quote
bk_blue Posted December 10, 2002 Posted December 10, 2002 My dog gets canned food and dry food. And a bone every couple of days. I want to put him onto BARF one day though, we'll see, he's doing well on what he's having now. Quote
Guest Anonymous Posted December 10, 2002 Posted December 10, 2002 Kibble with canned sometimes. More canned in the winter. Quote
yellowlabsrule Posted December 10, 2002 Author Posted December 10, 2002 Do a lot of raw bones make a the gums red right around the tooth? I was giving Winnie a lot of bones and that's what happened. I think her gums started bleeding to. Is there like a recipe or something for BARF?? Or a schedule for feeding? Quote
Aroura Posted December 11, 2002 Posted December 11, 2002 How old is Winni??? Has he eaten a lot of bones before? Maybe its only because his gums weren't used to chewing through bones, or maybe the bones were too hard? There are alot of variations to BARF, I wouldn't exactly call it a 'recipe'. My dogs aren't entirely on BARF as I can't afford it at the moment (oh, but I do start working tomorrow!!!! :D ). My dogs basically get their dry food, plus chicken necks and grated vegetables. Tessa only occasionally gets that, but Lily gets a big bowl of it every day and she's so healthy and shiney... Before starting on BARF you do have to do alot of research though to make sure your dog doesn't get any deficiencys etc. If you want to know more I could reccomend a forum  Quote
Mary's Mama Posted December 11, 2002 Posted December 11, 2002 I feed Mary Wellness Super5Mix Chicken. She also gets whatever fresh veggies I am cooking with dinner that night, and one kong filled with rollover everyday. I have researched both sides of barf and decided against it. I am not confident I know what to give her, and the bacteria and splintering of bones makes me weary. All natural kibble is a very good alternative! Quote
yellowlabsrule Posted December 11, 2002 Author Posted December 11, 2002 Chicken necks? She (Winnie) sometimes gets bones, but lately she has gotten a lot because we just butchered a heifer. (cow) Quote
Nancy B Posted December 13, 2002 Posted December 13, 2002 My dogs are totally BARF fed. I buy their morning meal of chicken backs by the 40# case ($20) but, as far as the bones go, they also get turkey necks, chicken necks and pork necks. Their evening meal is a "BARF meatball" that I make myself. It has ground beef, chicken and/or beef liver, beef heart, egg, ground dried eggshells, chicken gizzard/heart, veggies, supplements and anything else interesting that I feel like throwning into the mix. behle Posted January 19, 2003 Posted January 19, 2003 My dogs get a mixture of kibble and homemade "stew" made from ground beef, diced potatoes, and chopped celery and carrots. I cook the beef, add a little water, then toss in the cut vegetables and simmer till tender. The boys like it and it has reduced flatulence! Max's coat has really improved since adding this to his diet. The cost is more than canned food would be, but the boys eat much better with the stew. I can make a week's supply at a time saved in glad bowls and put in the freezer. Then it's simple to microwave and mix with the dry food. Max would eat his meat raw, but Ben prefers it cooked. The boys also get meat scraps-not gristle or anything gross-from the table. :eating: Quote
eggrolyn1223 Posted January 19, 2003 Posted January 19, 2003 Duck gets kibble right now, but probably going to change to BARF when i go live with my mom :D Quote
DogPaddle Posted January 20, 2003 Posted January 20, 2003 I'm still feeding kibble, researching what noncanned nonbagged food will work for us. Right now the Solid Gold-Millenia is working pretty good though. I've started exposing the dogs to a variety of raw and cooked foods so the transition to whatever diet I choose will be easier. Quote
Hobbit Posted January 21, 2003 Posted January 21, 2003 We feed Strongpoint (Naturally Premium). We would like to feed "Exclusive" --- but it's way out of our budget (for now). Quote
