Im campaigning for a second but it doesnt look like its gonna happen until i move out of my parents house, then its just gonna be a zoo.

What little thing (or big thing for that matter) that your dog does do you think is the funniest, most amusing, most athletic, etc. I know for Bentley its when were playing ball, he will have the ball in his mouth, but then he tries to howl, and the tennis ball fills up his mouth so much that it muffles his howl and then his whole head gets into the motion and its just the greatest thing in the world. He doesnt howl unless hes playing ball and even then he still doesnt do it often so it remains a rare treat.

I know GSDs, rotts, dobes, and ive heard of pitts. But im wondering if there are any other breeds who have the combination of skills necessary to be successfull in schutzhund?

I read a book over summer (on Bentley's first camping trip), called the intelligence of dogs, it was VERY insightful and interesting. He proves in the book that dogs can associate, count up to 5, went over the history of the dog, ranked canine intelligence by breed (ACDs are #10). And described a canine IQ test that you could give to your own dog. It was a very interesting book (although i didnt read the part about how the IQ test was done) and i would highly recomend it. Look for an ACD rescue, or encourage the family to give the dog [size=6][u][i][b]alot[/b][/i][/u][/size] more excercise. Ranch would be a good idea, but might be hard to find, then again you might have said that she had one lined up (cant remember). If you cant find one immediatly go for the ACD rescue, they will find a good home and dont euthinize so you dont need to worry about the dog not getting adopted right away.

Hobbit : i rescind everything i said in the BC's and ACD's thread with my tail between my legs. Neither of these dogs should ever be sold as a PET only animal, I cringe to think that Bentley's brother (who was at the humane society the same time i was adopting Bentley) could be in a situation like that. If you can only tell the woman one thing tell her that her dog problems are 100% her fault, not the dogs. She should have known what she was getting into ( a 10+ year day in day out relationship), and had she done even the most rudimentary research she would have learned that queensland heelers (more widely known by there official name ACD) are herding dogs with extremely high energy. Would she buy a house or a car without at least looking inside? of course not, so why would she get herself into a relationship thats just as important if not moreso?

Every good breeder will agree that you should never breed until a dog is done growing and especially not its first heat. The age i hear knocked around is 2 years. When was that book published? Im thinking maybe it is an old book that has an older understanding of dog breeding.

More conjecture, but maybe he is a bit submissive, felt that you where angry with him (telling him to settle down) and urinated to show his submissivness, i dont think it was that he really had to pee, because he would have at least tried to get in a better peeing position like squatting. I did some research on submissive urination when i was thinking of adopting a dog who had that problem and it sounds like thats what it MIGHT be, its not voluntary, its a reaction to feeling submissive, and can be helped by raising the dogs self esteem, and it can have varying degrees, so maybe he just has a very mild case.

Same thing with Bentley, except he was younger when he learned to go up stairs, bribe him to go down a few steps at a time, place him a few steps up, using a treat you should be able to get him down, if not move him down a bit more, eventually you can work your way up to doing the whole staircase with a treat or 2, then soon he can do it by himself, going up is easier, but still use treats as bribes, and just practice, all the dog needs is self confidence, its not the most natural thing for a 4 legged critter to go downstairs, but he will learn. BTW. hes not terrified of steps or anything, your not doing anything wrong, its just something a dog needs to learn, i think pat made it seem like your dog not knowing how to handle steps was abuse or something

He should be fine with your BC unless either is dog agressive, however terriers are bred to hunt and kill small animals (cats), it might be possible to seperate them, but it's like asking a hound not to smell. If you decide you cant place him yourself look for a fox terrier rescue who would take the dog instead of taking him to the humane society or spca which would probably need to put the dog down sooner than the rescue, infact i dont think ive seen a rescue that euthinizes dogs at all unless its sick. Why did your grandfather decide to give him up if i might ask?

That is funny, Bentley either goes 100 mph or 0, but when i talk to BC owners at the dogpark or other places they always say their dogs never stop, then again there is only one dog, so if im not in a playfull mood he doesnt have much of a choice, if he had a permanant playmate it would be chaos :)

ACD's and BC's would be very good, both are very intelligent and could deffinitly keep up on your run.

Sounds like bull, i would expect a pitt, even one not full grown, to extremely hurt a 5 year old if not kill her. Also why would a "vet tech" let their 5 year old child (guessing about 35 pounds) play with a young pitt (guessing 50 pounds) especially since pitt's have a bad rep (even though its undeserving) who wasnt on a leash.

Why not an ACD? Theyre alot like BC's but with an off switch (so to speak) ex: when im on the computer or tired he usually will just lay down instead of trying to start a game, but when play time comes he's a lunatic Theyre great for Flyball, agility, and are the 9th or 10th (cant remember) smartest breed (to be fair BC is #1) Bentley used to herd people alot, but he's not so much anymore, it started leaving when he was about 4-5 months, after his big boy teeth grew in. Well, Bentley is licking the mac and cheese residue out of a bowl from my lap... now he's sniffing the moniter and making some big nasty snot marks... now he's sitting by the steps, i guess its tennis ball time! :roll: :D

If i were you i wouldnt have been able to keep my cool, i realize much of that is the 17 y/o hormones and whatnot. But i have a suggestion, go to her house, and take all her dogs, get them spayed/neutered, and return them :evil:. Or kidnap her, and start an IDIOT X BABY MILL! Those ads are despicable, especially since there are so many dogs at the humane society, in fact i can picture one aussie shepard that i would love to adopt, but it was tough enough for my mother to let me adopt Bentley, i say it took me 17 years to convince her to let me get a dog :lol:

Well you guys are doing the right thing, get the bad seeds out of the park. I just started taking Bentley to the dog park here in Milwaukee, actually my dad is taking the both of us (im 17 and dont have a liscence or a car). But so far its been a very positive experiance, Bentley does enjoy the occasional rough game but it never goes to growling or biting. I hope this dog park remains a positive experiance as it is a beutiful place with hills, trees, and a stream.
