1. Yeah I also don't believe the statement that abortion would have been illegal. Maybe she was misinformed? (Offering huge benefit of the doubt here....)
2. Oh I just can't resist opening my big virtual mouth now. I don't know you either, (the one with the pups) but I think a little more info in your original post (i.e. the spay/neuter follow up), and at least a SHRED of remorse about not having your bitch spayed to begin with, would have spared you some of the wrath that came down. Also I second the applause that your dog is now spayed. If you would have bred her to the other lab it would have been BYB. As such a longtime Dogo member it astonishes me that you don't see this. One of the first things I read here is "What makes a responsible breeder?" and I learned a ton. (maybe you could check it out too? A sticky in "Breeding" I think.) Now you have a beutiful dog and a beutiful puppy, both spayed .... what's done is done so I for one join in saying "welcome back", it's nice to meet you and I hope you stay around.
3.
...I had an older sickly GSD several years ago that had a HEAVY load of HW's. The vet was hesitant to treat him because of the other illnesses. We ended up giving him Ivomect (heartguard) monthly until the microfiliria (baby heartworms) were gone and he was healthy enough to under go treatment. He made it through then...but he wouldn't have if we did the full treatment right off the bat.
I have read some positive testimonies on the web about this. An option that's worth asking the vet about maybe.. For those of you who are saying why WOULDN't you treat this ... believe me after just going through it there is no easy answer. It is a very serious situation and treatment in any case, and especially when the dog has already been so affected by HW. If my vet said there was GOOD chance of survival, then personally I'd try it but then if he said the chance of surviving was low then I wouldn't put any dog through it. Also I like DO's idea about contacting back with the shelter / rescue.
4. Oh I am wishing you all the best ... also no, it is not awful to hope it's something not too expensive!! Those thoughts go through everyones minds.
5. Oh sorry I didn't see before that they will not let him fly ... what a dilemma. I am so, so sorry.
6. Oh no ... crossing paws and saying a little prayer for you and Boonie! HW is so hard, having recently gone through it with Buddy. First you hear all these horror stories about treatment but then they are talking about the older treatment, the newer one is much better. Buddy was in major pain after the first injections (2 at the same time) but only for a few days and he was on the rimadyl which really helped. I think Boonie would have to be with you through treatment (at least one month after the immiticide injections you'll have to keep him real quiet). The anyeurism or embolism risk is mainly if they exert themselves. If he can get home and do his treatment immediately then, that would be best. Of course there is the hardest option ... that is up to you and the vet but I think it depends on how much damage the worms may have already done (if any). And they try to determine this with x-rays. I'll be thinking of you ... as if you didn't have enough going on right now.
7.
All I know is that all state and city have their own regulation. In my bf's city they won't let you have over 3 dogs. Animal controls checks up on every house to make sure they paid for annual fee and making sure if their are spayed or neutered. Also his not allowed to burry a dead dog in the backyard or you will get a fine. In my city they are pretty kick back but im guessing that my city probably don't have as much. My other friend that lives in another city 15 miles away he tells me that animal control do drive bys every week to make sure all dogs have their tags. You guys might want to check with your city.
They knock on people's door and demand to see their dogs with no search warrant? Me and my lawyer would tell them to go to h***. (Even though I would never have an unliscenced or "intact" dog).
8. Oh my, I haven't been around much lately ... Good job trying to talk sense into her ... too bad it didn't work. On the other hand all you downer buzzkillers are just makin me sad ... I'm going to go and watch more animal planet now.
9. My friend's sheltie can't deal with turkey at all - same problem with gas, also diarrhea.
10. Anyone else feeding Evo? If so how's it going? Well I have had Buddy on it as his main food for about a month .... but soon after starting into it I noticed his stools were very hard and pellet-like (like 2 inch diameter spheres). Also he just kept wanting more than he should be getting (he needs to lose weight). He just seemed really hungry after his alotted 3/4 cup twice a day. My solution was to get a small bag of the regular adult Innova (green bag) and mix it with the evo. I have dialed in a ration of about 1/3 evo to 2/3 Innova regular, 1 cup twice a day. Now his stools are back to normal (nice solid but not too solid cylinders) and he is satisfied after a meal. On straight Innova reg (prior to Evo) he was snubbing it and stools were still too soft (though he was also still going through HW treatment). I think I've found the right solution for him now, he seems to love the combo. Any other expericences with Evo now that it's been out for awhile?
11. Not getting all that green day stuff ... too old I guess ... though I htink we have their new CD on order. Anyway around here the blue heelers seem to be very popular. We have 2 just next door (both rescues .... yay!)
12. You did good speaking your mind! This is the one case where I hope the "big box" stores (Petsmart and PetCo) put the little independent ones out of business in my town. All the little ones sell puppies and of course the big 2 don't.
13.
I'm not sure if I would ever own a 100% Purebred dog. I'm too fond of mixes and mutts. :D
Agreed! I would never own a purebred or a puppy. I will always want rescued mixed breed adults. They are the smartest, cutest, and most loving IMO.
14. $5 for the license in my county (not sure about all of Colorado). Proof of rabies vacc. required and you have to have both tags legally, but my vet says a lot of people just use the rabies tag and skip the license.
15. OK graphic warning I'm gonna talk about poo now  I have Buddy on evo as his main food with quality bits of human food treats and 2-3 Milk Bones per day. His poops are definitely less in volume than when we got him, when he had been fed unlimited Ol' Roy from an automatic feeder. Then we switched him to regular innova (green bag) and they got better, darker and smaller but still pretty soft. Now with the evo they are nice and hard, often quite "spherical", and prolific enough (about 4 per day). Every once in awhile he gets a loose or mucusy poo. I wonder then if it is poor choice of treats and/or his tendency to munch on kitty poo. It has improved since I fenced off Gladysse's litterbox but I still have caught him with the neighbor kitty "popsicles" from our yard. FYI Buddy is about 4 years old, 50 pounds, probably lab/border collie mix. I am dedicated to giving him the nutritional best in part because he's had such a rough start. He was heartworm positive when we adopted him 3 months ago; he has gone through the treatments and is HW negative now with no negative effects from the infestation.
16. OT but when I (mis)read the title of this post I thought DP had moved to Haiti!
17. Well tonight I had a little guest for about 20 minutes. He ran up to me and Buddy on our before-bedtime walk. It is 4F out there and he was shivering like crazy! I suspected he belonged to a neightbor but I pounded on their door and no answer. I know they have a setup where there is a pen and their dog(s?) can go in-out from the garage but I thought it was still too cold and what if my hunch was wrong and this wasn't even their dog? A collar but no tags. I took him into my office, gave him some water and snuggles, then looked up the address on reverse directory to get the phone number. Luckily that worked and I got a call five minutes later. I turned the dog over to the grandmother, whose son owns the house, whose daughter is living at the house and supposedly "owns" the dog. From what I have seen this girl is a bit of a punk but how can I tell her grandma that? Grandma said "Oh she is afraid to get him fixed because his mother died when we got her spayed." When I mentioned it would be helpful to have a tag on him she said "Oh it must have gotten lost." I'm sure this lady thinks I'm a meddling so-and-so but I don't care! I am going to be watching them VERY carefully and also try to get in touch with the dad and go over the whole scenario. He is a forest ranger and HOPEfully will care!
18. Just curious - Would you pay the $30 USD minimum bid?
19. About the collar, ICK! Happy to see though, it did not sell through the last round. No bids. True_Pits it's nice to see you here again.
20. So it sounds like there are 5 out of 14 homes that have dogs that don't fit the "rules" ... not a majority but a strong enough percentage to get this turned around I think. What do they want half the existing neighborhood to move away?!
21. What a beautiful guy, whatever he is, you sure got lucky, sounds like a sweetheart.
22. The links work great, Ben and Bella are gorgeous ... real nice site. I am in a "weird" browser, Safari on a Mac OS X and sometimes this gives me troubles but with your site it all worked great.
23. Y'all are being so snipey just because someone said they loved a certain kind of dog. Not that I can talk ...
24. Not reading through all the pages so I don't know if it has been said yet, but the rarest one I know of is the Heinz 57. No two are alike (OK maybe 2-8 are alike if they're from the same litter). The rarest purebred I've met is probably a tri-colored mini datschund. I thought it was a baby beagle .... was rubbing my eyes! Then I asked the lady is that a miniature dashi and she said yes, the color is rare no? I also have met only one Bouvier des Flanders, "Arnold" after you can guess who. Owned by a family aquaintance. We had to babysit him for a little while and he was too much for us to handle, very friendly but you could not take him for a walk or anything, he was a leash puller and way too strong for any human to hold.
