izzy
Since Tabatha died my wife feels she need another dog to cuddle and spoil (Tabatha was so close to her), so she's been telling me about how much she likes black and tan daschunds  she doesn't tell me directly I want a dog!, but i know her and all you women there know how to say something without saying it :-?... So i guess i need to do some research about the breed, and find a good breeder here in Mexico, i want to do the things right. You know how i feel about strays and how many help they need, but this dog is for my wife's arms so as a husband, i have to please her  Any advice?... Goo?. BTW she wants a female... something like this: I took this pic from the gallery in here, is just an example

TDG
make sure you buy from a breeder who doesn't have bloodlines prone to disc problems and/or diabetes. personally i wouldn't buy a dog from any breeder who doesn't put at least some kind of working tile (regardless if that would be agility, earthdog or therapy work etc.) on them to prove they are soundly bred and the breeder's goal is the improvement of the breed and not just making quick cash. anyone who tells you that doesn't matter in a dog who is only going to be a pet is sadly mistaken. a well bred dachshund is a true joy to have around, but a poorly bred one can cost you quite a bit of money in vet bills and a lot of frustration trying to train. gooeydog
Congrats :) I'd start with the Dachshund breed club in the US (I have absolutely no idea if there are breed clubs in Mexico, if there are, then definitely try them as well), maybe they can help you find a breeder down there. If not, you may be lucky enough to find a breeder in the states willing to work with you and ship a dog after seeing that you would provide a great home. Dachshund Club of America http://www.dachshund-dca.org/ Their breeder referral pages (now, just because a breeder is listed there doesn't necessarily mean they're a good breeder, but it give you something to start with, and you can always narrow down the field with your own qualifications) http://www.dachshund-dca.org/Kennelads.html There's more info on Mini Dachshunds here: http://www.dachshund-nmdc.org/ including some info on health problems in the breed. and more breed info here: http://www.dachshund.org/ And just in case, here are some rescue groups as well, if you have a hard time finding a breeder nearby or who will ship out of country, maybe one of the rescue groups will be willing to work with you or may even know of a dog in your area in need of a home, worth a try anyway. http://www.drwp.net/ http://www.dachshund-dca.org/Rescue%20folder/rescue.html http://www.drna.org/ http://www.c2cdr.org/index_adoptioninfo.html http://www.almosthomerescue.org/ TDG also gave you excellent advice, the breed is very overbred right now, and a lot of poor tempered/unhealthy dogs are being put out as a result, so it pays to research and take your time in turning every stone before making a decision. izzy
thanks a lot for the help!, those are great advices and sites. Here in my city will be a dog show next month so i will have the opportunity to be in contact with breeders and kennel clubs, so i hope to find a good breeder. Actually i don`t want a mini daschund, i read about their health problems, etc. And about the loud barking, we're so used to them with 2 basset hounds in home you need ear protection sometimes :-? thanks again, i'll keep you updated :D
