Guest Anonymous Posted June 5, 2005 Share Posted June 5, 2005 I picked her about about 3 hours ago. Stopped to buy some really good (I PRAY) Shampoo to kill the very potent dog oder. She was "groomed" by a vet clinic but still has some dreadlocks and to the skin mats. I had to cut all the fringe off of her tail because I couldn't get a brush through her tail at all. I have already spent about 2 hours grooming just ONE side of her and still have a ton to go. It's going to take me a week or more just to work out these mats and such. I have a friend who is suppose to come over tomorrow to help me out. Her stomach is matted bad but she is a sweet girl. She was afraid of the cats! I had to convince her to walk past them. Kids are no problem. Dogs are no problem as long as they aren't pushy with her. Here are some pictures. Oh the verdict is that she is an Anatolian/Great Pyr Mix. Of course once I get her coat cleaned up she could be a really poorly bred ASD. She jumped in the front seat when my husband ran into a store. Guest Anonymous Posted June 5, 2005 Share Posted June 5, 2005 She is doing good so far. She slept next to my side of the bed with no problems. Has been asking to go out. Yesterday I brushed her a bit, cut the mats out from behind her ear and had to cut off all of her tail fringes because they were dreadlocked. She is going to be beautiful when we are done. courtnek Posted June 5, 2005 Share Posted June 5, 2005 tomato juice does work (coming fromexperience) but you have to wash multiple times (really multiple times) on long haired dog to get the smell out. there are skunk remedies you can buy that work faster I believe, and someone here once posted a skunk recipe that was supposed towork really well. and I have to agree with K...I would just cut the mats out. her fur will grow back in just fine afterwards... 8) Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

I just have one question...what do you do with a dog with Mats who moves, lays down, rolls over every time you try to clip a mat? She is fine with me brushing and pulling on her coat but keeps being a PITA every time I try to trim her mats out. Her rump and belly are so bad I"m waiting on hubby to come home so I can get my clippers out. She has been so good. No longer afraid of the cats...she doesn't seem to like them very much. One just got into my lap and she lunged and growled. Cat tore up my arm getting away as I was reaching for her and yelling leave it. OUCH! I knew things were going to good. courtnek Posted June 5, 2005 Share Posted June 5, 2005 you may be making the same mistake I did cutting mats out of Jarvis. the long haired dog-from-hell.... 8) are you grabbing the skin and trying to get as close as possible? if so, dont. think of trying to brush a knot out of your hair. the closer to the head, the more it hurts. cut in "half-mats"....then let it go for a while and cut in "quarter-mats"....each time pull very gently on the skin, and actually place your hand down on the fur (like you were holding a cup) around the mat and cut with the other. dont lift the skin up until you absolutley have to. this gets the dog used to the cutting. also, dog hair grows fairly fast. if you leave just a little bit of the mat close to the skin for a few days, it may grow out enough that you can cut it without lifitng the skin at all. 8) Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Guest Anonymous Posted June 5, 2005 Share Posted June 5, 2005 Since the undercoat is what is matted and it's so dense I'm considering shaving those areas. Her Belly is getting shaved for sure. I spent two hours brushing out her undercoat but because it is so dense and so unkept and therefore matted I'm seriously thinking of taking the clippers to her.
