PLEASE HELP!! BEN'S SKIN IS BLOOD RED AGAIN!!

About an hour ago I noticed Ben had a red spot on his throat. I took a closer look and it was BLOOD RED! :o He's had troubles like this before and the vet has diagnosed it as allergies (and so have I) but it's never been THIS red.
Has anyone got a better clue on what it might be. It's ALWAYS on the troat at that spot where it's now. Never anywhere else on the body (sometimes at either of his cheeks, but that is extremely rare).
I'm going to post some pics in a few minutes when I get them uploaded to internet so you can see how it looks.
Isn't this a fantastic "christmas present"?
I doubt it that I will get any sleep tonight, worrying about Ben. And I can't go to the vet, because she's not in at Christmas. :( I put some cream I've got from the vet before for theese kind of things, and it usually helps, but I thought I'd ask if anyone of you have seen this before? Could it be something else besides allergies??

Here's how I have to bandade him so that he don't scratch the skin off. :(
the vet has diagnosed it as allergies (and so have I) but it's never been THIS red
has the vet been specific as to what allergies? my dog (who isn't a hairless but has a fairly thin, sparse coat on his belly) had spots like that from scratching himself when he had a flea allergy dermatitis.

there is no cure to allergies except avoiding the allergen entirely, or desensitizing (mostly done via injections). for either method to work, you have to find out what the allergen is.

have you used any new cleaning products, laundry detergents, skin care products on yourself, or anything that you can connect to his problem flaring up? been feeding something new/different?

aside from contact allergies (pollen/grass, dust mites etc.), food allergies are the most common cause. i don't know what approaches you have taken yet, but here are a few ingredients of commercial foods that often cause allergies in dogs:

- wheat, corn, soy, and their respective fractions (like wheat gluten, soybean meal, corn grits), especially when poor quality grains are used
- yeast (like brewer's yeast or yeast culture),
- beef (like beef, beef meal, beef byproducts, etc.)

i'm also familiar with cases where dogs were for example intolerant to chicken, to an extent where even an otherwise lamb-based food that just had chicken fat as an ingredient caused problems. the owners were able to track down allergens in foods by trial and error and successfully battled the problem by feeding a food that had only lamb as an animal source ingredient and sunflower oil as a source of fat.

i hope you'll be able to pin down the problem soon, i know how miserable my own dog was when he had to scratch all the time. :(
Do you have emergency vet in your area?
No we don't and I wouldn't want to go to a vet I don't know. The last time I went to an unknown vet was with Bella's ear infection. The vet DECIDED already ON THE PHONE that she had allergies. Plus that he thought I knew NOTHING of vaccinations and deworming. I have on my homepage in Finnish a whole ARTICLE on deworming and vaccinations. So I must know nothing about it. So I'm not doing that again. I trust the vet I usually go to. She's been right with every little problem we have had.
Wow, that really is bad. How long has it been there?
It suddenly appeard in about an hour. So it was really quick. That's why I'm worried. Usually his allergies come in 2-3 days. First it gets a bit red, the second day it swollens up and on the third day the itching is so bad that no matter what he scratches the skin off. But this came so quickly!
has the vet been specific as to what allergies?
No... But I've done the same as my mom did to me (I'm very much allergic aswell), tried diffirent things and ruled them out or in depending on what happens. So far I KNOW he's allergic to all the diffirent E-codes (colouring and preservation stuff... you know?) and then plum, fish, spices and herbs, many products from the sea, many diffirent dog foods such as Solid Gold and Royal Canine. Oh and wood! He liked to eat wood when he was little and that always came out as a rash. And then dust mites to some extent.
have you used any new cleaning products, laundry detergents, skin care products on yourself, or anything that you can connect to his problem flaring up? been feeding something new/different?
No... We always use the same cleaning products and laundry detergents because I'm allergic to some aswell, so I have to use things that I don't get any reactions from. So we always use the one and the same.
I haven't fed him anything new either. Well... X-mas ham with only pig butt and salt. But he's got that before last christmas and the christmas before that. And I know he's not allergic to meat (besides fish) and thank god for that.
Does ben usually wear a collar?
Yes he does. I usually have a collar on him 24/7 because he has this tendency to run away and I have a little plate on the collar with his name and my phone number. So I keep the collar on, so if he runs away I know that the person who finds him sees that. (plus that the plate allso shows at night)

He's a bit better today. It isn't as red anymore. But I can see now that the skin has been torn a bit from his nail. :(
I hope that what happend last time doens't happen now. Last time the area was like 5 times smaller and when I got the redness away (it wasn't THIS red) and it started to heal (he had scratched the skin off no matter how I tried to stop it), it started to come this yellow liquid out of it. So much in fact that the bandade stuck on the woond. I had to use water and tear it off. Ofcourse then it opend again and again more yellow goo. It took over 1,5 months for it to heal. If it happens this time I know Ben has to get antibiotics to get rid of the bacteria out of it. Luckilly there isn't a bacteria yet in it. I have to keep it really clean so that that doesn't happen again. (did my best last time, but it happend anyway)

Ben's buckle is made of metal...

I'm so happy now! :D The redness is TOTALLY gone now! You can see that the skin has been torn with the nails, but it's healed so good! It doesn't hurt, it doesn't bother him, he doesn't scratch it anymore...!

I still wonder where it came from...

Hi,

As you will already know (if you have read any of my other posts) I have an EXTREMELY allergic puppy.... She has 5 food allergies, an intollerance and an atopic allergy to a mould spore for which she is currently undergoing a series of hypersensitisation injections (these start at an interval of every 4 days and move up to an interval of every 21 days rising in strength as they go and normally a hypersensitisation course lasts for 2 years).

The only way to full determine what a dog is allergic to is to see a dermatology speciallist and undergo testing: normally interdermal skin testing for atopia and food exclusion diets for food allergies.

Some dogs are extremely sensitive (as some one else pointed out) and react to the smallest amount. The way that your dog's rash has come on so suddenly suggests to me an atopic allergy as food allegies take time normally to go through the system. It would have to be a pretty severe allergy and if he's never had a reaction like this before I would suggest that he either got an extremely large dose of something he is allergic to or encountered something new that he is allergic to.

But the only way to know for certain and take real steps to work on the issue is to see a specialist.... Yes this is expensive and time consuming but well worth it.

My little girl is happy, healthy and sparky now where as before she was limp, skiny, had no fur and set off my skin allergies as well.

You really need to be specific and treat each allergy separately.... Sometimes with extreme cases this means being limited to one food source, regular medicated baths (Zayda had to have twice weekly medicated baths at one stage) and cleaning routines.....

I hope this helps.... Good luck, it seems that your poor little man has extreme reactions to something and you need professional help to find out what it is... Your regular vet whom you trust should be able to refer you to a specialist.

Hope the new year is better for you
Danielle
