1. I made a mistake like that today. Toto woke me up and he only does that when he has to go now!! Well I had to go too and right now !! I was afraid if I took the time to go all the way to the back door I would end up going in an inappropriate area. So I selfishly took care of my business first and when I got out there in the middle of the floor was squishy poop. I guess he had a bit of diarrhea and couldn't hold it. I hope that creepy kid doesn't scold the dog if he poops in the house because it's his fault for not letting the poor dog go. I bet his parents would be mad if they knew.
2. Just for fun I asked my sister who worked in a grooming shop for 10 years. Her experience was that no dog breed was all bad but she did become quite leary of Chows. She said more often then not they were snappy. But there were a few that were very sweet. The only time she ever got really scared was when she had a pit bull on the table and made that mistake of turning her head and he came really close to biting her face. That just scared her because it was so close. They did have a pit bull puppy that was raised in the shop meaning he spent all his days in thier with his owner and went home at night. He was so sweet but then one day out of the blue when he was full grown he went after a man who came in the shop. It makes you wonder when a dog does that out of the blue what is wrong with the man. Unfortunately that meant he couldn't come stay there anymore. She also said that the majority of Cairn terriers were nothing like our boy. Most didn't behave on the table but most were lovers of people but not so much other dogs. I guess we have a rare one. Other then that none of the breeds were consistent enough in their behavior to have a solid opinion.
3. I can't think of a dog I would never have. I believe they are individuals and all I ever do is go through the shelter and whomever I fall in love with that day is the one I adopt. I have always done it that way. I don't even research until after. I am not picky. But since I am not staring at the dogs right now in order to fall in love with one I have to say as a former big dog lover. After owning my cairn I wouldn't trade him for any big horse. It seems like their all brawn and no brain.(sorry just my opinion)My cairn weighs 20lbs so it's not too difficult to carry him around although I rarely do, he has energy to go on forever, he makes friends everywhere he goes, and he is the smartest dog I have ever owned. He is absolutely amazing. But because of that unless I fall in love by accident I will never have another. I know I will never get one just like him and I would be comparing the new cairn to Toto(niece named him  ). I do have two other dogs one is a sheltie and he is only 9 months old but I love him and even though he is a bit scatterbrained he is really sweet and that makes up for any faults. The other is a border terrier mix that doesn't act like a terrier at all except for the time she killed our hamster. But we got her at 3 as a stray so perhaps she was used to killing for food who knows. We just learned to keep her away from the hamsters. I know this is like Pit Bull central here but the fact is I just don't like the looks of them. There are some of the most homely dogs I have ever seen. I would own one because it's not a beauty contest but if I have a choice no I don't think so. No slobbering breeds either that just makes me sick to think of all that slobber. Labs are great I have had a couple in my life and a couple family members have had one. They aren't hyper forever they do calm down after a few years. One of the smartest dogs I have ever had was a lab. But he was mixed with terrier so I don't know if they balaced each other out. I think they are pretty close to the perfect family dog.
4. I totally forgot about that my dog is on the Glucosamine and Chondroitin also.
5. I don't have a problem with them licking from my silverware or plates. Dogs are no grosser then human beings in fact your more likely to get germs that will harm you from the other humans we let eat off our silverware.
6. Oh that is so cute!! At least he learns quick.
7. All mine do is quickly run outside pee or poop and run back in but it usually takes time when pups to get used to the rain and cold and then after that once a year they need a day to adjust it requires me to do a lot of "Go pee pee, NO don't come in, no go out and go pee pee. I said go." The neighbors probably think I am nuts. But I do have jammies for my cairn cause he gets cold in the middle of the night. Picture below. I think your gonna have to give up covering the belly for trips to pee. Even Toto's jammies have the belly showing and I certainly don't send him out in those to go pee. Why do they do that with every clothing item?
8. I don't see a difference between tipping to get your haircut and tipping the groomers. We always do.
9. Aww poor Rocco I guess he didn't have much choice a dog usually just walks forward after pooping. They must be durable to be dragged around that much.
10. Well it doesn't hurt to check sometimes we have a sixth sense about our dogs. But from what you wrote the only thing that made you worry is he was sleeping really soundly. He was probably just having a nice nap when they are all cuddled up like that they always feel warmer. You probably are being a worry wart but that's alright I am one too.
11. Thank you 3 of a kind. I think you have to have one before you truly appreciate the personality of these guys there a laugh a minute. Toto does something everyday that makes me laugh no other dog has been like that for me. There was a Jack Russell terrier in our obedience class when Toto was taking it and Homer(that was his name) and Toto were the hit of the class they learned so quick.
12. Toto has a sensitive stomach and the doctor has us give him Pepcid. It happens every now and then he'll just have a bad tummy day and when we give that to him he seems to feel better.
13. Toto is a big baby he puts them on but won't walk in them he just stands there looking at me like I am the crazy one for putting them on his feet. I had one dog years ago that has since passed away I had never seen anything like it. I put them on her and she proceeded to leap in the air and shake all her feet at the same time and they flew off. I never tried them again with her. So for me personally dogs aren't going for it. But then I live in California I just didn't want them to get muddy feet but we really don't need them.
14. Yes be careful with Rimadyl. I had a dog Brandy who when she was 12 had to have her cruciate ligament repaired both legs actually. We went through 6 weeks of very time consuming physical therapy and just as one leg was getting better the other ligament needed to be repaired. Well there is a lot of pain trying to recover from that surgery so they put her on Rimadyl and a few months later out of the blue with no warning she is lethargic and won't eat. We take to her vet who immediately tells us to take her to the emergency vet. We find out the next morning after tests that Brandy has liver failure. She had to be euthanized. We couldn't believe it she was a very healthy dog it just came out of nowhere. We didn't put two and two together until months later when I was doing some reading on this medication for someone else whose dog has sever arthritis. I came upon a site that mentions horror stories about liver failure and kidney failure in dogs on Rimadyl. Well it turns out you have to check their liver levels before you put them on and then check them regularly to make sure nothing goes wrong. They didn't tell the vets this until all the deaths started happening. So if your doctor does prescribe it make sure they know what they are doing and check those levels regularly.
15. Cassie had mentioned that terriers most of them are snappy. When I first adopted my Cairn terrier alot of the people at the grooming shop where my sister worked asked me why did you get a cairn? The thing is that you have to remember what terriers were bred for to catch vermin. Now a lab most of them their last instincts is going to be to bite but terriers they want to bite first and ask questions later. Cairns also have the gigantic teeth. But if you really get to know the breed they are confident, independent, and friendly with any person they meet. They are little clowns that amuse you constantly.Toto matches those traits except for the independent part he actually really needs to be near someone at all times. I have never met a person who owned one that didn't want another the personality is so unbelievable. They are amazingly smart, spunky little guys. They are described as a big dog in a little body. I have found all of that to be true. Toto ended up winning over everyone at the shop because he does not fit the stereotype, he stands like a statue when being groomed and has never so much as snapped at anyone. Then when he is done he is all over them with wiggles and kisses. But I know that not all are like my dog so when asked I do give them the good with the bad. There honestly isn't that much bad. I wouldn't say he is my favorite breed because I believe all dogs are individuals and I will never get another cairn like him. So I will never get another one. I love them all and don't dislike any breeds. Dogs are Dogs and the breed guidelines are just that guidelines each dog has thier own personality so you really never know completely what your getting.
16.
oooppps...wrong thread..never mind :o
 I wondered what that was all about. I had to go back and reread it thinking I missed something.
17. Not all luxating patellas are genetic there are some that are a result of trauma. So it depends on the type so you could do research and still end up with a dog that has it. I have a dog with luxating Patellas. How severe did the doctor say it was? There are different degrees or as they call them grades. Toto's case is very mild he has never yelped in pain or had any lameness and he is 4 1/2. Some dogs will go thier entire life with no problems with it. Some dogs it will function pretty well and just not be able to jump on things as well but others over time it becomes quite severe and they will develop severe arthritis and become lame. It all depends on the severity. Did you doctor tell you what grade your dog is?
18. That is one of the hardest things about having a small dog that is overweight. It's hard to imagine they can be overweight with such a tiny amount of food. My previous vet told me 10 calories per pound is all they really need. That seems so little to me.
19. Thank you Tammy for starting this thread!! I have been here for a little while now and try to keep up but now I can finally see what everyone has and keep up and the stories to go with it is so much fun to read. My family thinks my 3 dogs is so many dogs I now know there are others like me that think there is no limit to the number of dogs you can love. I told them as long as I am the one taking care of them what do they care. Thanks again!!
20. He's cute!! I am having trouble keeping all the dogs straight if it's not too much trouble could you post the names of the dogs with the breeds. Just being nosy I like to know what other people have. Plus it makes my measley 3 dogs look like nothing.
21. Oooh Toto would love those yummy balls I wonder where your secret santa bought them. I have never seen those. Toto:several kinds of balls, a toy he's 4 and still loves them like a puppy, and treats Mandy:a new warm t-shirt, and treats Shadow: He loves the toys with ropes hanging out of them and of course treats.
22.
Singapore is rabies-free. Here's what we pay per year: $14 for a male dog $14 for a sterilised female dog and $70 for an unsterilised female dog
Typical the female must be sterilised but the male gets off scott free. I think both should have to be altered but if they were only gonna do one why not the male dog since the surgery is easier on them. I bet it's men that made that law. Anyway here it's $10 a year for altered dogs and $30 a year if they aren't.
23. Well maybe they could do the search before he is out of your sight. Then they check the kong for explosives  then let him go on to the plane. This summer the last time we flew we had to take our shoes off I never had to do that before. I was glad no one had stinky feet there were a ton of us standing around in our socks.
