courtnek Posted September 29, 2004 Posted September 29, 2004 I have read a number of threads that suggested using peroxide and water to clean my dogs ears. (Laurel is badly infected, but getting better) what solution? how much peroxide to how much water? thanks much. :) Quote
BuddysMom Posted September 29, 2004 Posted September 29, 2004 Yeah, me too!! But it seems that a 1:5 solution of peroxide:water would be safe for just about anything topical for doggies (OR people) ... maybe start there and increase the potency if needed? Quote
courtnek Posted September 29, 2004 Author Posted September 29, 2004 1 1/2 part peroxide to 1 part water? Quote
courtnek Posted September 29, 2004 Author Posted September 29, 2004 someone PLEASE answer? I need help here everyone. her ear infection is BAD, antibiotics are not curing it, and I cant find any pharmacy with the ingredients that I trust for the "blue stuff".. PLEASE!! :o Quote
Lokipups Posted September 29, 2004 Posted September 29, 2004 Court, it's a 4 to 1 ratio, 4 parts peroxide to 1 part warm water. Forgot to add, you can actually use the peroxide straight, it's inert and harmless, but the warm water is to help break up any gunk that may be sticking. Just pour a bit in her ear (one at a time) and rub the base of the ear to get it in good. Then use a bulb syringe to extract it. Plus, maybe a dose of Benedryl to ease the pressure, it can't hurt to try. Quote
Horsefeathers! Posted September 29, 2004 Posted September 29, 2004 Court, I wish I could help, but I don't know the first thing about an ear cleaning recipe using peroxide. You may need to wait until Cassie is back on. It seems she may be the one to know. Sorry. :( I'm not understanding what you mean by this:
I cant find any pharmacy with the ingredients that I trust for the "blue stuff"..
You mean, you can't get the ingredients? I am familiar with this recipe, just unsure of what you meant. Quote
Lokipups Posted September 29, 2004 Posted September 29, 2004 I do believe we posted at the same time  . Quote
courtnek Posted September 29, 2004 Author Posted September 29, 2004 thank you Loki, that helps. some of the ingredients for the blue stuff are used to kill cockroaches. i dont want to use that unless I know its safe in her ears. some of the other stuff is active in eye/contacs usage..I cant seem to find this stuff not mixed with other things, for other purposes... :( :( :( Quote
Horsefeathers! Posted September 29, 2004 Posted September 29, 2004
t some of the ingredients for the blue stuff are used to kill cockroaches. i dont want to use that unless I know its safe in her ears.
Courtnek, as far as I know (and what I use), plain boric acid (like the roach stuff) are fine. The same exact boric acid is marketed to groomers and vets in commercial ear powders for use in drying out ears and removing ear hair (gives a better grip on the hair). When I made up my blue power batch, I just used plain household boric acid (roach killer) and have never had a problem with it. As "advertised," it has worked like an absolute charm for mine. Someone tell me if I'm wrong? I know I'm right about the ear powder, so I assume that's what makes it safe for the blue power recipe. Quote
TDG Posted September 29, 2004 Posted September 29, 2004 the fact that boric acid is used for killing roaches doesn't make it dangerous, just like corn gluten can be used to get rid of weeds naturally doesn't make the corn gluten a dangerous thing. it's very, very soothing to infected ears and works very well with the rubbing alcohol and gentian violet. peroxide is very drying and might not bring much relief to the dog from the painful infection. if the blue power doesn't take care of it, you might want to look into using pellitol. http://www.medi-vet.com/Pellitol.aspx it has helped a lot of dogs with extreme ear problems. Quote
BuddysMom Posted September 29, 2004 Posted September 29, 2004 Oh in my other post I was thinking 1 part peroxide to 5 parts water but it sounds like that may be waaay too conservative? WHOA on the borax! I called the product's poision control because I thought Buddy had gotten into an ant bait I made with it ... they said a small amount of ingestion would not have posed a risk but to wash his paws and maybe give him a bath because it could be a skin irritant. Weird because I have heard of it being used as a flea powder ... I have to think there are better things to use. Quote
BuddysMom Posted September 29, 2004 Posted September 29, 2004 Me again ... I was trying to think what I would try home remedy wise and it came to me ... green tea bags. Do you have any? If so I'd try it ... soak the bags briefly in hot water and just hold against the inlammed area ... Green tea has soothing, anti-inflammatory and antibiotic properties. (My company sells it and so I have written about and researched it). It couldn't hurt .... Quote
courtnek Posted September 29, 2004 Author Posted September 29, 2004 where can I get gentian violet? and pellidol? The pellidol one sounds ideal, because it stays in there and soaks everything up. I cant seem to find the stuff anywhere though. Quote
ObedienceGrrl Posted September 29, 2004 Posted September 29, 2004 Court, We have used peroxide on our Lhasa's ears but not when they were 'bad' bad...... But it will change the color of the fur if used long enough! Remember....it bleaches things out! Quote

http://forum.dogomania.com/viewtopic.php?t=15559 As for the gentian violet (sp?) I got some at the local drug store, they were kind enough to order some in. It's pretty cheap but really messy to use. Dont wear white. As far as using Peroxide in the ears, that made my dogs ear much much worse. Yes, it was diluted. My dogs ears turned all red and inflamed. It was really sad. Quote
imported_Matty Posted September 30, 2004 Posted September 30, 2004
If you are going to try the other home remedy...and if you have a hard time finding the Pellitol ointment it is manufactured by Veterinary Specialities, Inc., Barrinton, IL (888)838-7732 vetamerica.com
Quote by Cassie Quote
courtnek Posted October 2, 2004 Author Posted October 2, 2004 *sigh*...well, I spent all day driving to pharmacies and looking for the Gentian Violet. Nada. Finally came home and searched the walgreens website. I had been at walgreens already, thats where I got the isopropyl alcohol and the boric acid. They had a listing for gentian violet powder, so I called the Walgreens near my house and asked if they maybe had it in liquid. She searched, and said "yes, it's in the Spanish aisle." *sigh* why didnt I just ask the pharmacist while I was there? Anyway, I'm going over there later to get it. I would never have thought of the Spanish aisle, since I dont speak or read Spanish....The lady on the phone was pretty funny. She asked "out of curiosity, what are you going to do with it?" and I said "make an earwash for my dog" and she says "Blue Power treatment, eh?" ARRGGHHHHH..... maybe I shoulda just called and said "I need ingredients for Blue Power Treatment......"      Quote
TDG Posted October 3, 2004 Posted October 3, 2004 just in case you still need it, you can order pellitol from the following websites: http://www.vetamerica.com/pelli1oz.html http://www.thomasveterinarydrug.com/mailorder/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=1084 http://www.revivalanimal.com/index.cfm/page/Detail=1/Product_ID=773/Product_773.htm Quote
courtnek Posted October 3, 2004 Author Posted October 3, 2004 ok help me here please... 70% isopropyl alcohol 4 tablespoons Boric Acid 16 drops of Gentian Violet. it supposed to be "Blue Power Treatment"....but its PURPLE. Before I put it in Laurel's ears, is it supposed to be blue???? or is purple ok?   Quote
TDG Posted October 3, 2004 Posted October 3, 2004 it's fine. the color can vary, since gentian violet is a natural ingredient. and the color of the flower depends on the soil and other natural influences Quote
courtnek Posted October 3, 2004 Author Posted October 3, 2004 THANK YOU!! I was scared of Purple, but i will go with it now!! thanks!!! Quote
Horsefeathers! Posted October 4, 2004 Posted October 4, 2004 Court!! Be aware that if she slings it (and she probably will), it can stain fabrics (couches, curtains, carpet) & skin :P . I don't know how you're putting it in, but we bought the tippy bottles... you know, like ketchup and mustard go in with the long tips on them. It's easier to get it right down in the ear like that. Remember to shake well first since the boric acid tends to settle at the bottom. Good luck! :D Quote
