1. I too would like to know if that one works well...... I think thats the one I wanted to get at petsmart (or else it was something similar that promises no pulling) but the people there said they get them back all the time because it rubs and makes sores under the dogs arms. they convinced me to get the gentle leader, but Im still not sure Im real happy with it. she does MUCH better, but occasionally does try to pull still and Im afraid could hurt her neck :( another trainer keeps saying to try the prong, and Im thinking about it, but not sure on that either. I know all these methods arent really training her not to pull anyway, and thats really what Id like so she can walk on any collar, but none of the methods I was trying were working at all. I just want to bea able to take her on enjoyable family walks, etc!
2. sorry - thats just what it sounded like :( it sounds like an awful long time to hold it - I'd definetely get her checked out........
3. does she get water in her crate? if shes in her crate all day and all night without drinking its no wonder she never has to pee :o if she does have water in there I'd definetely have her checked out...... either way that seems liek an awfully long time to be in a crate :(
4. I think it totally depends on the dog and the way they are raised....... I have Bongo, a Kelpie, GSD, dog knows what else mix who has never played with toys much - when he was young, we got him a variety of differnt toys - he occasionally chewed on rope bones but has always much preferred a treat to toys..... Bailey, a beagle/whippett mix, is totally the opposite - she thinks the world revolves around toys  she cant have too many soft squeaky toys!

Bark collar?

good timing on this question DAL, I jsut heard about them from a trainer who gave a talk at the HS last week and wanted to learn more about them (the citronella collars) Ive been having a hard time with Baileys barking also and all the methods Ive tried just arent helping. The bitter apple definetely has an effect, but I feel I jsut cant be consistent or fast enough to really work, thats why I liked the idea of this collar........ however that $94 seems like ALOT for it :o thats a bit out of my budget right now.
6. Bongo boy (I call him "handsome") Bailey Jade (my hubby added the Jade one day)
7. I say DO IT! definetely. Our shelter does microchipping automatically with every adoption and I cant count the number of people who have said it helped so much to get their pet back home alot faster. the only thing that I have heard otherwise is to check what company it is through - some are not read by some scanners or something........ in our area the biggest one is AVID. maybe someone else can give you some better info in that area
8. this topic interests me...... Bongo has a few "blueish" spots on his tongue, and when he was young someone told me that meant he was part chow b/c only chows have blue tongues :-? Ive always wondered what other breeds may have that and what other reasons there are for it since Ive seen alot with atleast a little spot
9. yes, it sounds to me like he is jsut very young and "in shock" - good luck
10. I say leave it and him alone  the rest of you continue to say "Leo" and Adam will eventually get it too..... when we adopted Bongo, Brads speech was pretty bad and he called him "Gongo" for a long time
11. how old is he? it could jsut be that he is getting used to being away from the "home" or situation he knew...... if he seems sick: is lethargic, diarrhea, vomiting, etc youll definetly want to get him into a vet though...... hopefully other people will have some otehr answers or ideas for you too....... good luck
12. you have got to be kidding?! :o I think its adorable!! my sons old pom didnt have any teeth on one side and his tongue was contantly hanging out that side - we thought it was cute!!
13. shes almsot always fine if we are home with her..... has had occasional accidents, but pretty rare. We have noticed she is extremely shy about peeing  she wont go if people are looking, or if she really has to, she gets as low as doggie possible to the ground first, or (and this gross, but funny) she will search out a mud puddle or if we are at a lake and immediately wade out and go there  so maybe its jsut some weird quirk of hers I guess  she is in an "intermediate" crate, shes a 30 lb beagle/whippett ....... it seems to be a good size, big enough to turn aroudn and lay down comfortable, but not "spacious" so she could get away from any messes
14. Thanks Carol, but actually Bongo is usually awake when I come in, he jsut doesnt bother to get up  we arent sure how well he is seeing and hearing...... at the dog park the other day he wandered away from us and I saw him go up to a few people (which is rare for him, hes never been real social) and kind of sniff them and walk away, it really looked liek he was looking for us and was confused...... I had Brad go over and get him and he was fine. I started wondering if he isnt seeing much, but nothing else really tells us that, so maybe Im jsut paranoid
15. Ok, this is getting a little annoying....... anytime I leave Bailey in her crate for more than an hour or so she pees in it :o she doesnt seem to have a problem with being in her crate, she happily goes in it, but Im trying to figure out why she does this :-? dogs usually dont "go" in their crates I thought. I put a towel or blanket in there so its more comfortable, but the pee is always on it. Do you think it would help to not put anything in it with her? or do you think there might be a uti or something causing it?? (what would other symptoms be?) I always have her go outside before she goes in and never put water in it with her........ she rarely stays in longer than 4 hrs, but even that long is rare - she is a yr and a half old. what do you think??
16. Thanks  I have noticed that he rarely gets up to greet me when I come home now (or atleast not right away) but somehow he still seems relatively happy to see us. he wags his tail still, although some people tell me he will more than likely wag it til his last breath, so its not a good gauge :-? I really dont know........ he has never been a "normal" dog - always kindof a loner, and rarely shows feelings esp. of pain (except the time Bailey ran into him - thats literally the only time Ive seen him show pain) I still expect though that somehow we will know when its time.... :( every night I lay with him face to face and wish he could talk to me
17. as good as can be expected I guess...... :-? He's hanging on - eating some days, some not - his head above his eye on the tumor side is "caved in", the vet says most likely the muscle is atrophying (sp?) she said it probably doesnt bother him though. he seems fairly happy, or atleast doesnt seem horribly uncomfortable most of the time :( I am getting worried that becasue we see him all the time the changes we see are very gradual, almost unnoticeable, whereas people like my mom who only see him every couple weeks or something say he has gone way down hill  that makes me even more afraid we wont know when the time is right.
18. He is 2 yrs old, and yes he will be neutered regardless of who takes him (owners or otherwise)
19. Debbie - heres a really poor quality photo of him.......
20. So, I'm planning our next doggie will be small to medium, and I prefer non drooling....... so what did my son fall in love with yesterday at the HS?? a NEOPOLITAN MASTIFF!!!!!!!!!! LOL  he spent the majority of his shift as Dog adoption aide hanging out with this huge guy! it was really cute though, if he walked away when he came back the big goof made that growly, talking sound "Iwuv u" like in dr dolittle  (know what I mean?) on another note, this is one dog Im hoping his owners do not claim him! --- he was brought in as a stray for the 2nd time and our policy is the 2nd time it happens they are do be spayed/neutered before they will be released. the owner came in once already and went ballistic when he heard that and went up to the front counter and literally laid a HUGE roll of money on the counter and said "what wil it take to get my dog out of here?" the lady ignored the $ and went into the details of the fees and he said " no you dont understand - *flipping through the wads of $* HOW MUCH will it take to get him out of here NOW, intact" :o thank goodness she said no way will he be released without being neutered..... the guy left, and we are unsure if he will come back or not, but if he doesnt, he already has a spot in a mastiff rescue :D
21. I heard on one of the dog shows I was watching on TV (cant remember which) that they simply changed the name.....
22. Im glad you guys like them - I had to share....... we all know all too many sad stories in the shelters :( I was enjoying it so much I stayed over 5 hrs, when I signed up for 3  DAL - the deaf aussie is still there - I think she has some hearing, but definetely not all. A couple with a young toddler (from ft lewis  ) was interested in her yesterday, but Cecily is leary about placing her with a young child...... they went home to think about it anyway. atleast we know SP will take her if she isnt adopted :D
23. I've recently started volunteering as a Dog Adoption Aide at the HS (I've been volunteering there over a year doing various things) Today was really a good day there........ a guy in his 40s came in and I saw him approach a kennel and scream "Charlie!" and immediatley start crying, the dog was obviously excited to see him ..... so neat to see happy reunions!! (there were two of those today) Then this afternoon an older guy was wandering around for almost an hour and he finally asked me about a poodle who was there...... this poodle is 15 yrs old and looks as if hes never been groomed, hair covering his eyes, horrible matts everywhere....... I told him gently "he is very old and has a heart murmur and needs a dental...." and the guy put his arm on my shoulder and said "Im really old too" :( he is 74, but looks much older and is blind in one eye...... I went on that this little guy needs a home and people to love him for whatever time he has left, but he is going to require alot of money as well as time to care for him properly, and the old guy says " I adopted a 14 yr old boy (human teenager) 4 yrs ago :o I can handle anything  I let him visit with the poodle for quite awhile and then he called his wife to come down and see him also..... they adopted him!! I was so happy I hugged both of them :D I like days like that and adoptions like that where I really feel good they are goign to a good home!!
24. with Bongo, my hubby and I were looking at the animal shelter on Guam, there were tons of puppies, but somehow we both saw him and immediately said, he's the one :D with Bailey, Brad and I were working at the HS bathing dogs and cats and everytime we walked by her kennel she stared at me with her big brown eyes - I kept coming back to look at her and after we were done workign I had Brad call his dad to come down and see her also...... she was ours from the beginning :D in the greeting room she was so good and knew commands and even fell asleep on Brads lap  some kennel workers said they had trouble with her growling at people, but she never once did that to us there or at home - I guess it was meant to be, she knew she was ours :D
25. Jsut wanted to say I appreciate the info here as well - I have been wondering the same thing for when I find a playmate for Bailey and wasnt sure if I shoudl get a male, or if another female would get along ok......
