1. I am very sad to have to say that Angel, the mom of the pups, got sick. I took her in saturday morning and the doctor called me at 10 last night and had to put her to sleep as she was beginning to seize and had been passing pure blood all day. I am so shocked and devastated - i thought being older she would be better able to handle it. Here is Angel when we first got her a couple weeks ago: and here she is Friday night snuggling with Brad when she first started showing signs she wasnt feeling good RIP
2. I replied in DALs post about Athena hwo the rest are doing - thanks :)
3. Thanks so much for posting this DAL - I couldnt have dont it yesterday. jsut to keep you posted, i did go in today and Jr (who was looking pretty rough yesterday, but one of the biggest) was trying to chew his IV this morning, so thats a really good sign that something was annoying him and he had the energy to try do something about it! another one is on IV, and the other 2 are on sub-cu fluids, not eating, but could be worse....... its the first day we've had anything close to good news, so Im thrilled!
4. thanks so much naomi - I dont know if I can face any more gone - after we go to petsmart?
5. sorry - the other 2 legged kids are ty and aly - they are upset but ok... all 5 are showing signs of it, but not as sick as jewels was yet. its jsut that athena is so small if she gets it very bad she has almost no chance
6. dont worry - its not like its a change, ive been crying since I took them in
7. Thanks - brad is doing all right, but hes helping me clean right now.... the other 5 puppies are: athena, junior, billy, shane, and furby IF athena makes it through this (and thats a big if given she is so tiny and skinny already) she will come back home with us for as long as it takes to help her grow
8. Thanks so much Naomi - you made me cry all over again
9. THanks so much - DAL, I do need you, but there isnt anything you can do anyway  unless you want to go to the HS with me tomorrow after petsmart......? oh wait, you have to get back to the kids - sorry Ill see ya later tonight
10. we got to the HS and went to check on Jewels and she was gone. the dr didnt even know it yet until she brought us back. I guess all we can do is hope the others pull through
11. I only have a sec as Im on my way back again - the sick one tested positive for parvo, and now the others are showing signs as well..... they will all go in to be on fluids, I am devastated - especially worried about timy little athena  Ill keep you posted
12. I dont know that i should even be replying because Im hoping this is pretty much solved or atleast "agree to disagree"........ but I'll add my .02 : rescuing any kind of dog is not supporting a BYB, Im hoping its clear now that she is planning to look throught the HS and rescue groups - not breeders! regarding the 2 dog rule - Ive lived in base housing, unless she has a nasty neighbor the chance of them ever finding out are real slim, and if they did the worst that can happen is they make them move off base (and then the military pays your rent  ) if thats a risk they dont mid taking then why should anyone care?
13. one of the pups (now about 8 wks old) has been throwing up today and is lethargic  they are all goign in to the HS vet this afternoon, but I feel so bad - Ive been so lucky that my dogs rarely ever get sick at all. bongo had that tooth infection, but other than that in his almost 12 yrs Ive only had to take him in for reg checks pretty much...... I feel helpless!! poor thing!!
14. bailey seems to have a permanent perch on the arm of the couch looking out the window - even with the blinds closed, she lifts them and looks out and believe me she sees and hears EVERYTHING
15. Ive tried that too, but she runs right back to the window or door and barks her head off again  i seem to only be able to distract her for a second or two and shes back at it! (and right now she has two other adult dogs to join in her "fun" - "lets see how crazy we can make mom!!")
16. Ok I have a question - I am trying the method HF talked about to "reward" barking with bitter apple spray - but Im wondering does she need to be actually barking at the time I spray?? with bailey if I walk toward her she stops, but then starts up again if I turn away or anything. when she barks I am saying "thank you" all perky like I should, but I feel bad spraying her if shes not barking that second - but then if I dont there isnt any chance to....... what should I be doing?
17. Youre not a bad mommy - or atleast if you are, I am too, so we're in the same boat! I too have been lax about Baileys training, esp since I got the foster puppies, and work has been really busy...... its hard to get out there and do it when not only are you so busy with "life" but youre the only one being responsible for it  I totally understand how you feel about the prong, but youre doing the right thing. as I understand it, if it works for him, it will be better int he long run than the GL so he will eventually be able to go to a flat collar. dont feel bad!
18. it could be at either place, but I would do it at mine...... I have 2 "med" size dogs, so whats one more?! I am guessing I will have my fosters til sometime next week, so with any luck it might work  Does Star get along with other dogs? - Im sure she gets along with kids, since I know you have some  I have 3 kids (6, 10 and 13) If you are interested I will find out for sure about the fosters and talk to my hubby tonight......
19. When is this for ? I would be willing to pet sit if I dont have the foster puppies anymore - otherwise I can help you find someone...... in fact my mom has been an awesome pet sitter for us - she loves dogs, but doesnt want to get another one til she retires, so she loves to watch them temporarily (shes in north tacoma)
20. unfortunately the humane society provides their food - and they feed puppy chow :( I wish it was a matter of picking it up fast enough, but they are literally eating before it hits the ground :o yuck! I am pulling them away, but with 6 its nearly impossible..... it sounds like Ill jsut have to do my best to ahve them outside seperately and tough it out otherwise
21. OK, this is really gross, but its driving me crazy, so I have to ask  these foster puppies I have seem to have an obsession with eating eachothers poop! :o I have heard dogs love to eat cat poop, but this is getting ridiculous - if one of them starts to go the others rush over to eat it even before it hits the ground!! and theres 6 of them so it really hard to get them away!! have you guys heard of this? why would they do it?? they get plenty of food and even do it right after they have eaten, so they shouldnt be hungry! :x should I be concerned?
22. Just wanted to bring this up to say I have jsut started trying this - have only done about 2-3 times - I used to use "enough" as a cue to stop, but it wasnt workign anyway obviously so to stay with the whole "perky/positive " thing I changed it to "thank you!" ..... it defientely has an impact - with only a timy spray Bailey is behaving like a total drama queen! spitting, sputtering, all but playing dead! LOL  we're not "cured" yet, but on our way I think! Thanks again for the great idea!
23. petsmart has the bitter apple spray - about $5 -$8 depending on the size here - it says its to use for dogs that bite themselves, but it has other uses also...... jsut spray some on the item you dont want him chewing Id think..... I jsut started using it as a "reward" for barking  as was suggested in a post the other day.....
24. Thanks 3ofakind - I forgot I was goign to mention that too  its supposed to be very effective, but personally I would only use it on the most "prized possesions" (an expensive couch maybe, etc) jsut because I prefer to try postive methods first - Good luck!
25. my vet has been doing the every 3 yrs for awhile now :D this does bring up a question I was thinking about the other day - so I hope Im not hijacking this post with it........ I dont like to vaccinate Bongo if I dont have to anymore bacause he is 11 1/2, but I do worry about all the fosters I bring in bringing something like kennel cough (which I vaccinated Bailey against) should I vaccinate Bongo also?
