1. Mei, usually I have to agree with you, but in this case, SarahQ is right, this does smell like the "resale" scam that's becoming quite popular around here :( . It's not the first time I've heard it, and it sucks. NY state considers companion animals property, but unless the original owner has a receipt from a petstore or breeder, or paperwork from their vets office, with the guys name on it, they're pretty much SOL.
2.
Kira's woo woo wooing at everything.
Isn't that the greatest sound :) ? When all three Sibes get going, it sounds like a conference :P .
3.
They were actually going to KILL this seven month old puppy over the ear infection and demodex...
:o May a terrible, disfiguring accident befall them  , rotten %$##%%'s (insert favorite descriptive word here). HF, bless you for taking him in, he's absolutely adorable  ! And from the pics, his coat doesn't look too bad if he's got demodex, which some ivermectin and a good diet to boost the immune system should clear it up in no time!
4. Nice job Jeff, I hope they ticket the snot out of him :P .
My dad always gives them crap about eating doughnuts.
I had a bumper sticker years ago "Bad Cop, No Doughnut!". :haha:
5. Lyme and Erlichia are antigen specific tests, if they aren't looking for them, they won't show up in a CBC. Although I'm sure the last thing poor Taurus wants is another needle stuck in him :( , poor guy.
6. This may be a long shot, but has Taurus had a CBC and SuperChem blood panel done? It almost sounds like a bloodborn illness, Lyme disease is popping into my head, Panosteitis is also possible as well :hmmmm: .
7. ....only in blue and white since I'm a Giants fan  ?
8.
I have no doubt that if we get a Cane Corso there will be constant 'look at that mean pitbull' comments, which is one of the reasons I want a GSD (or a Neo Mastiff--I love those dogs). But the Boy is stuck on a Cane Corso. I guess it won't make a difference because people are going to make stupid comments no matter what. Canis, I assume when you get a puppy you're going to leave it uncropped? Cause that is definitely what I'm doing. :)
Hey Mei, why don't you split the difference and get a Tibetan Mastiff? Great temperaments, the coat of a longhaired GSD but the size and shape of a mastiff :) . And Canis, whatever you decide, temperament should be on the very top of the list with this breed. I'm working with one now who's already bitten someone, and is one tweaked out dog. The owner thought he knew what he was getting into, did all the research, got her from a breeder, didn't stay on top with the training and asserting his dominance from the start, and now he may lose his dog over it.
9. Marinna is going to her new home hopefully next week, which is always a good thing! We were all stumped about the donations, every rescue group that was there said the same thing :-? , go figure. But it's all good, the Broadway Cares group gave us a check for $2200 from the auction, whooohooo :multi: !
10. I know I'm more of a lurker here, but I thought the board might get a kick out of seeing one of the bigger events my rescue group does. For those of you who might not be familiar with Broadway Barks, it is a huge adoption fair that is organized by Bernadette Peters and Mary Tyler Moore, both major dog lovers and animal activists. The event is hosted by the Broadway Cares/Equity Fights Aids group, which is comprised of all the actors who appear onstage. Just a few of the big names who came out in suppport of the event this year are Delta Burke, Billy Crudup, Harvey Fierstein, Jeff Goldblum, Andrea Martin, Marsha Mason, Rue McClanahan, Bebe Neuwirth, David Hyde Pierce, Jeffrey Tambor and Bruce Vilanch (who was Husky House's celebrity du jour ;D). PS ~ Michelle, I told you you should have come :P !! Here are the dogs we brought, Cinnamon Smokie And my girl Marinna Me, being interviewed by Animal Planet And Smokie getting his airtime in :)!! Mary Tyler Moore and Bernadette Peters kicking off the event. It's finally showtime! Bruce Vilanch did a great job into'ing us, he was hilarious! And Marinna performed like a trooper, giving me Husky hugs when asked! Jeff Goldblum is ENORMOUS in person, I knew he was a big guy, but seeing him in a movie doesn't do him justice :o ! Kisses for a job well done.... ....and a well deserved rest too! Would you believe we only made 14 dollars in the donation jar??!! Thank god we get a check from the event itself, otherwise we would lose money going to this event! All in all, a good day, but I'm glad it's over so I can take a break for a few weeks.
11.
As long as no laws are broken and the dogs are well treated, it is none of anybody’s business
Wrong, it becomes my business because you cannot be bothered to keep track of your dogs, and my rescue, along with hundreds of others, has to clean up after you and the rest of the "breeders" who are of your caliber :x.

Pinch Collars?

Malamum, on my training forum, the debate has been going around for a long time on whether or not prong and e-collars are banned from Australia (one of our long-time members lives there, and does use both collars, but had them shipped). I was under the impression that you couldn't buy them there, but could order one and have it shipped to you, as long as it wasn't assembled. Is that correct, or have they lifted the ban :niewiem: ?
13.
How do you train a husky though if it is an adult and was never house trained ever? Is it possible to teach an adult to be good indoors if it was never taught that before? What do you do with a husky that insists on chasing cats? If memory serves me correctly, once a dog learns to chase animals and enjoy it, it is nearly impossible to train the dog out of it completely.
Over the years I've had to retrain dozens of them, difficult? Yes. Impossible? No. The first thing we do is to get them the excercise they usually desperately need (I break out the harness and strap on my rollerblades, works for everybody  ). Once they're good and tired, crate training starts, along with basic obedience, and it can be done at any age. Siberians raised with cats are usually not a problem, but finding one in a rescue that tolerates them is tough. I have one myself, but she's a rarity. Can you retrain one to leave a housecat alone? Yes, but you need a trainer well versed in the use of an e-collar and the crittering method. The pic below is Anna, a Husky that had never seen the inside of a house, and an abuse case to boot. After 5 foster homes she came to me. The first several weeks with her were trying to say the least, she would find the very center of the backyard and curl up into a ball for hours on end. If she came into the house, she would pace back and forth like a caged animal and she was terrified of men (my poor husband jumped through hoops with trying to get her inside  ). After three weeks of umbilical training, along with some basic obedience to bolster her confidence, she is now a happy indoor dog who likes nothing better than to curl up on the couch with me. 14.
I know it may seem "cruel" to leave the dog outside 24/7, but believe it or not, SOME dogs prefer to be outdoors. Siberian huskies especially. ~Seij
That is a myth and I'm surprised you bought into it. Siberians are one of the most pack oriented breeds in existence, and any Sibe I've brought into the rescue that was an "outdoor only" dog quickly adapted to living inside with the pack. Any time I hear "oh, but he prefers to be outside all the time" really means "he chases the cat, has made toothpicks out of the dining room set and sheds everywhere". That is the lazy, uncommited way out, and it pisses me off when I hear it, because all of those things can be avoided with some training and research about the breed. Leaving your dogs outside when the weather is bad is negligent, period.
15. Good god HF, I'd like to drive down and bitchslap that woman :x ! Really, did that storm come up so fast that NOBODY could bring that poor Sibe inside? And why do I get the feeling that that dog spent lots of time outside, wonderful for a Siberian in a Georgia summer, where I'm sure it's hotter than a whores dream right about now. It hits over eighty five and my whole crew stays inside in the AC, never mind a storm.
16. Daisysmom, I've tried every recipe in the book to make yogurt coating for dog treats, and not a one of them worked :( . Now I buy the yogurt wafers in bulk from this place, http://www.barryfarm.com/candy_making.htm, the prices are great and the sugar content isn't that high.
17. There are only two schools in the US that most professional trainers will recommend, Tom Rose in Missouri and Triple Crown Academy in Texas, both are excellent. But JackieMaya is right, one of the best ways to go about it is to find a mentor in the business, a good trainer to show you the ropes hands on is invaluable. I was lucky myself to find someone willing to take me on 20 years ago, and I have returned the favor by taking apprentices over the years. However, she's also correct about making that kind of money, it takes years to make a living at it, and 75K is only made by the best names in the business. If that's what you're looking for, perhaps another line of work would be more suitable.
18. Dirt eating is pica, usually a symptom of an iron deficiency. She like to munch on ice cubes as well?
19. Siberians also come in long coated or woolly, but it's also considered to be a major fault in the breed. Here's a link to some woollies :) (which I personally love, fault or no fault 8) !). http://www.huskycolors.com/wooly.html
20.
Here's my favorite thread on NILIF (it's on another board... sorry...I just love this training forum...). It's in deapth and couldn't explain things better.
DO, thanks that was a really nice compliment  , especially coming from someone who's pretty damm dog savvy herself :bigok: ! And we just covered mouthing and bite inhibition this week in this thread http://dogden.proboards21.com/index.cgi?board=Aggression&action=display&thread=1113946308, but feel free to pop in and ask for some specifics!
21. Leah Remini, Tom Green, Kate Jackson, Connie Stevens and Michael J. Fox all own Siberians (Tom Green actually owns three  ).
22. Go ahead and use dish soap on him, just dilute it 1 part soap to 10 parts water, and use a washcloth to clean his face off carefully. Or you could leave him be and invite a buch of other dogs over to help lick him clean  . He must smell delicious :haha: .
23.
When she bit my son when he was napping on the couch I was sitting at the other end of the couch reading a book.
Where was the dog when this happened, on the couch with you and your son, in the middle?
24. Dominance/posession aggression, get the dog off of your lap and on the floor at all times, immediately. NILIF big time, no toys, meals, affection without doing something to earn it. Everytime Rerun is up on your lap, you're elevating his position in the pack, literally. Plus, by being on your lap, he's treating you as his most prized possession and is seeing your son as a threat. The dog needn't be put down if he did snap at your son, especially for something that you've unwittingly fostered by giving him better status in the family than he deserves. A good dose of hardcore NILIF should straighten out his snotty attitude fairly quickly.
