1. Court, Laurel's a Lab? They seem to be more prone to ear infections for some reason, has your vet ever done a smear from a swab of the canal? That would help pinpoint whether it's a yeast or wax problem. Or it could be from seasonal allergies too, does she seem to get the infection around the spring and fall more? My vet has given some of our dogs Tavist D or Benedril to help ease the pressure in the ears. And Labs can suffer from hypothyriodism, which in turn can make seasonal allergies worse. Peroxide and warm water is a gentle cleaner, just use a bulb syringe to remove the excess, and see if that helps any.
2. Coprophagia, yuck :eviltongue: ! Actually it's a pretty common thing, wild canids do it so their natural predators could not track them, but in your cute and cuddly housedog, it's kinda unnecessary :-? . Sometimes the solution is a simple as switching their diets, a high premium dry food will give them enough nutrients so they don't feel compelled to eat their waste. Home remedies are also popular (although how well they actually work I don't know), and include putting pineapple in their food, or MSG (meat tenderizer, like Adolph's) sprinkled on their kibble. It supposedly makes their stool really unpalatable. Or you can try and find an additive called Forbid, Foster's and Smith may sell it on their website. And be sure to be vigilant about picking it up immediately after they go, take away the opportunity altogether.
3. She's beautiful HF, and it was certainly meant to be! And you were so worried about the rescue trusting you with another dog  ! I wish I had more people like you to foster  .
4. HF, I'm so sorry, you've had to endure way more than anyone has a right to  . While I'm sure nothing will make you feel better right now, I hope you can take comfort in the fact that you gave that lovely boy a terrific home with lots of love, and you have an amazing capacity for compassion and a huge heart for doing what you do. Regards and sympathy, Laura
5. Here's a Leonberger, this is Jethro, he belongs to one of our volunteers :D . Good thing his mom is 6 feet tall herself, this big chooch is 175 lbs. :o (bigger than standard for a Leon). JackieMaya, go for it, Hogan's a beauty!
6. Actually, I do believe that pupper is mostly Leonberger :o !
7. How about this from the ASPCA? http://www.aspca.org/site/DocServer/Why_SpayNeuter-English.pdf?docID=188Maybe you could condense it down and use it alond with the graphics in the previous threads :hmmmm: .
8. Yeah, like Free is some kind of fighting dog, NOT :o . And if that's abuse, then I'm guilty of doing it too, god only knows how many times I've told one of mine to go kick the other one's arse :P . Don't let some well meaning (sort of) idiots decide to ruin your day by being judgemental. If it should happen again, tell them to MYOB and to call the animal control if they're so worried.
9. Oh, but my favorite part is where they mention how their Shepherd has "Her pedigree is filled with white German Shepherds!". :o :o :o
10. :o I don't think I'm going swimming tomorrow :o .
11. They got them all out safely, but thanks so much for the offer! Sigh, the sad thing is, is that there'll be another PM just like it to replace it eventually :shake: .

13. HF, it may have been arsenic, and yes, it can take up to several weeks to see any effects from it :( , I'm so sorry for your poor client. Most rat poisons are anticoagulants, hence the bleeding out. Here the link for the Merck Manual if you want some more info. http://www.merckvetmanual.com/mvm/index.jsp?cfile=htm/bc/212900.htm But here's the scary part, someone else I know had the same problem with her Sibe, turns out the feed store where she gets her stuff from had contaminated food storage :o . Is that a possibility?
14. Please, I BEG of you not to get a Siberian Husky unless you have done your homework on the breed!! I do Siberian rescue, and I have more purebred Sibes then I know what to do with right now, because of people who don't think it through. They shed like monsters all year round, are destructive when bored, need tremendous amounts of excercise, obedience training is a must, and they can NEVER be let off leash. Think you can handle all that?
15.
A dog sex life...hmmm...let me ask my 5 females and two males if they miss their sex lifes....
I definitely miss mine when I have to take care of ANOTHER unwanted litter of 4 week old puppies :o , enough said :-? .
16. I actually know of Ken, he's supposed to be an excellent handler and he has a good reputation. Sending your dog to a reputable trainer for "board and train" is fine, as long as you "finish" with the dog. When I still did board and train, all the clients would have to spend 3 hours working with their dogs on pickup day. However, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. And no reputable PPD trainer will take a dog like yours to make it more "protective", dogs used for that purpose are handpicked from puppyhood. If you dog is shy and submissive, and makes a lovely pet, then great! And just wait, she's only a year old, as she hits maturity, she will become more naturally protective of her pack, but as of now, it's like asking a girl to do a womans job.
17. Amazing what people will believe when spoon fed information by militants :o . I live 15 minutes outside of Manhattan, and there are more deer here than you can shake a stick at :-? . I have no problem with hunting as long as whatever you kill, you use. I wouldn't/couldn't do it myself, but as long as you aren't doing it strictly for the sport of it, I think it's needed to control the overpopulation, considering the last time I saw wolves in NJ was around the 12th of never.
State wildlife agencies often argue that our cities and rural lands would be overrun with wild animals if hunting were disallowed. However, the biological truth is that animals regulate their own populations, based upon available food and habitat. In nature, unaltered by humans, there is no such thing as a "surplus" animal.
I find this statement almost funny. In real "nature", you have all the available species to control the populus of the forest. BUT, whereas deer will be happy to traipse through your backyard in search of a meal, their natural predators (wolves, coyotes) will not be so quick to follow. Sigh, PETA makes me ill, if they had their way, nobody would own a pet of any kind, blind people wouldn't have guide dogs, and we'd all overdose on soy and tofu :P .
18. Ok, at the risk of being bombed, here's my take on it. Prong collars and e-collars have their place in dog training, but you must FIRST lay the groundwork by teaching the commands. Too many people take the easy way out by slapping a training collar on a dog and using it to teach commands by the way of avoidance, which is lazy at best, abusive at worst. Training should be done in the proper phases, which is teaching, proofing and correcting. Teaching a command can take months, it's been shown that it can take up to two thousand repetition for a dog to understand a command. Then there's the contextual issue, dogs learn in context. This would be the proofing stage, where you take the dog to different places and essentially teach the command all over again, because after all, just because Fido knows what sit means in the comfort of his own home, doesn't mean he knows it when your standing in line at the local Petco :-? , and people seem not to realize that. The next stage is correction, and should be implemented ONLY if your sure the dog knows the given command. Not fair to correct a dog for something he doesn't know. Now with that being said, the biggest problem with people who use compulsion training is that they forget to balance the correction with praise and treats for a job well done. I think training is all about balance, cause and effect if you will. Positive training is great, but how do you make a dog understand that there is a cause and effect for all actions with a clicker only? You can't, period. I would much rather my dog was corrected by me with a prong collar for stepping out in the street without my permission than having a car bumper do it for me :o . As for e-collars, I don't know what kind of collar you strapped on to test on yourselves, but I have put my Dogtra 1200 on my own neck and hit the stim, it's nothing more than a buzz at the lowest possible level, and a static electric shock you'd get from walking on the carpet in the winter at a higher frequency. The cheaper collars have a MUCH harsher stimulation to them than the professional models sold today. Only the hardest of hard working line dogs need a higher stim than a 2 (and that's out of 100 settings). My dogs were trained off-leash on a ONE nick stimulation, and are now weaned off the collar, no dummy collar required. As for the girl on Leerburg who posted the question in the first place, I think she's jumping the gun with her foster dog, she needs to step back and evaluate the dog, work on teaching rather than correcting.
19.
Charges are not likely to be filed in the case because the incident appears to be isolated
What ever happened to negligence :o ? Doesn't that count anymore? If the child had been left in a locked car under the sun, or had died from ingesting a household poison, the authorities would have been all over them for child abuse :x .
20. Voodoo, with traits like those, that's a contender for Schutzhund for sure!
21. There's something very important missing from the great list, NATURE"S MIRACLE! An enzymatic cleaner is a must for accidents and housebreaking :D .
22. Shara, awesome pics :D ! Where did you find a clear tunnel!? I want one!
23. DO, I made all my own practice equipment out of PVC pipe for about 1/4 of the cost, and it works just as well as the expensive stuff! Weave poles, bar jumps, and a tire jump can all be made from PVC, lemme poke around and find my plans for you.
24. Hey Tammy, didja spring for the xeroxed copies of the lecture notes for 10 bucks a pop  ? I got yelled at for trying to write notes :P .
