I guess that's why they call them yappy dogs... Seriously though, Poms generally bark a lot. Some breeds are just bigger barkers than others. Didn't you find this out when you did research on the breed? It just doesn't make much sense to me to go out and get a dog known for barking and then complain when it barks a lot. :-? If you absolutely have to do something like a corrective collar, I would go with the citronella over the shock collar.
Even if a breed is generally known for being one way or another, when you adopt a dog, you're getting someone else's bad training or no training. Maya is part Husky, which are known for being roamers and for being vocal, and after I adopted her, found out that she's a fence jumper. Sure, I don't like the fact that she's a fence jumper and barker, but I figured out how to work around her problem (cable her when she's in the back yard and citronella collar at night). Maybe if DAL had gotten Stryker as a puppy she wouldn't be a barker, but that's not how he came into her life. So she just has to work with what she has now.

The citronella smells great! The dogs just don't like getting sprayed with it. I LOVE the smell!

Here's a picture of the citronella collar in use (picture is from Petsmart site) Holy Moly Rocky! I just noticed that they're going for $94.99 at Petsmart! It's been a while since I bought mine, but I was sure it was in the $30-$40 range! Yikes!
Everything about this is so stupid: (1). I'm not an expert, but the two dogs biting the other dog don't look like pitbulls to me. (2). The Sharpei was chained in the backyard. Chained. Chained. What's one of the reasons they tell you not to chain a dog? :-? (3). Idiotic owners of these 'pitbulls'. Where were they? (4). Idiotic owner of the Sharpei. Put the effen camera down and try to scare away the two dogs attacking your dog!
Yeah, what she said! Even if you didn't want to get in the middle of a dog fight (who would!), at least throw things at the dogs or spray them with water or do SOMETHING. If you could get a car back there, drive the car up to the dogs and start honking the horn. Geez, just stand there for an hour and take pictures.

I'll be keeping my fingers and toes (and the girls' paws) crossed for Haley! Give her a kiss for me!

Geez, I just can't believe what those people are putting you through! Is there any way you would be able to buy Meg so that she would be totally in your name? It sounds like that's the only way you'll get these people to lay off you. Good luck!
-
Wow! That's what I need! Can you get them at Petsmart/Petco? Or do you have to order them online?

The citronella goes off when the dog barks. Maya has found out that she can do a quiet "woo" or low growlies and it won't go off, but barking sets it off. And a few times Jackie has barked at Maya, and they both ended up getting sprayed! I don't know how well it would work inside, especially if everyone is barking. I work until midnight, and I don't want my dogs barking at 12:30 in the morning, so I only put the citronella collar on Maya at night. I let her be a dog and bark during the day.

I'm so glad he got a permanent home (although I thought it should have been YOUR home-LOL). He's such a cutie. I love happy endings.

I use the citronella anti-bark collar on Maya and it works great! I blow into it before I put it on her so it sprays citronella in the air, so that she knows that it's working. Once in a great while when there's a loose dog outside our yard, she won't be able to help herself, and she'll bark, but that doesn't happen very often. Then she'll come inside with her lovely citronella perfume, and she rolls around trying to get it off. LOL She even wags her tail when I get her citronella bark collar and harness out because she knows she gets to go outside to play! Good luck with Stryker!

Thanks for adding my site, Crystal! And I'm glad you're adding Petfinder too, because that's where I found my girls.

C@t is a dirty word. A dirty word is cat. LOL

I don't know if this would be something you would be interested in adding to your site, but I own a catalog and internet gift shop, and I sell dog statues and a leopard print dog bed. This is the link to the dog page for my site: http://www.pegsgiftsnthings.com/p2834h/default.asp?dept_id=296&nopopup=1

Geez Kat, I'm so sorry for what these people are putting you and Meg through! The poor girl definitely doesn't look happy in that picture. I hope they realize their mistakes so you can get your Meg back!

Wow! Jackie is in first place with 30%, and the bulldog is in second place with 20%! Thanks everyone! I think the contest goes through Sunday. I'm so proud of my pretty girl! -
Maya got real sick last fall when the lawn guys cleaned out the gutters and didn't clean up the gunk that ended up on the ground, and she must have eaten some. I didn't realize until after I had let the girls out that they hadn't cleaned up their mess. I had a $400 emergency vet bill for Maya. She was vomiting for about a week, and had diahrrea one day. She made a complete recovery, but she was a sick girl. So I know how sick dogs can get when they eat the wrong stuff.
Right now, Jackie is in third place, in between the Pom and the St. Bernard. The contest goes all week. Thanks everyone! (I didn't even find out she was in the contest until today!) -
Jackie is in the Kipper's all breed photo contest, and she would love it if you could vote for her! She is the third one down on the left (with the Jolly Ball). Thanks! http://members.aol.com/iluvpwcs/contest.html Here is the picture of Jackie that's in there, just so you know for sure which one she is! I found the coolest dog toys for my dogs!!!
JackieMaya replied to CincoandDahlilasgirl's topic in Everything about dogs
This is Jackie and Maya's favorite toy. They liked it so much that there are 4 of them in the house now! They play tug with them and only 2 tails have come off. In the picture, it's the squirrel on the bottom that I have for my girls. -
I should borrow some grooming items from my horse! Some of those would work great on a shedding dog!
-
That sounds like so much fun! Meeting some Dogo people and going to Crufts! Have fun and take pictures!
-
Maya is shedding so badly that if I give her a little kiss on the top of the head, my whole face is covered in hair! Jackie isn't shedding, but Maya is shedding like there's no tomorrow! When I pet Maya, it looks like I'm wearing a fur glove! It's real good I'm not allergic to dogs, because I probably end up with more dog hair in my nose than I have on my head! Well, that might be a slight exaggeration, but you know what I mean. Have any of you ever vacuumed your dogs? I've vacuumed my horses, but haven't tried it with the dogs yet. I don't know if Maya would stay still to let me, but I might give it a try tonight. Luckily Jackie and Maya don't seem to do their heavy shedding at the same time!

Jackie is the princess and Maya is the tomboy. And that pretty much describes their personalities. Jackie doesn't like to get dirty. Maya will come in with her feet and legs all muddy, and Jackie will be clean. If there's a layer of ice on top of their outside water bowl, Jackie will lick and lick and lick and lick and lick until she gets through to the water. Maya will stomp her foot on the ice to break it. If I'm on the sofa and they want to get on with me, Jackie will step up onto the sofa. Maya gets a running start and leaps onto the sofa. If Jackie has a toy, Maya will go up and take it from her, and then bring it right back to Jackie like she's saying "hey, let's play with this!" When the squirrels are in the trees, Jackie will be silent, and will sit by the tree for a long time, perfectly still. But when Maya sees a squirrel, she starts barking at it. When Maya drinks water, she dribbles as she's walking away from the bowl. Jackie licks her mouth before she leaves the bowl. My mail slot comes right into the house. So when the mailman puts the mail in the slot, Maya barks like crazy. Jackie doesn't do a thing. When I come home from work, Jackie ALWAYS has to have something in her mouth. Maya never has anything in her mouth when she greets me at the door. My goofy girls: I love 'em!
