Carol, I'm so relieved that Jesse has made such a great improvement! I'm so happy for you! It'll be so good (for all of you) when he can come home!

Figured out why he dosn't want to go outside
JackieMaya replied to StarFox's topic in Everything about dogs
I also like what Dobe suggested. In fact, that's what lots of people will do with horses to get them to accept you. Just hang out with them, not approaching them, but waiting for them to come up to you. You're NOT a bad doggie mom! Everyone one of us at one time or another has yelled at our dog, or at someone, with a stern or angry voice. Zeb just happened to pick up on it and it stuck with him. He'll come around. Give him time to figure out that it wasn't a big deal. -
One time when I was taking Jackie and Maya for a walk around the neighborhood, there was a black lab barking from inside his chain link fence as we walked by. Next thing you know, he jumped over the fence and start trotting after us. I just kept Jackie and Maya focused on me and kept on walking, making sure I knew where the dog was. The lab lost interest in us and jumped back into his yard. A lot of good his fence is doing! Of course, there was no owner around. That lab has been seen roaming the neighborhood many times by several of my neighbors. Maybe he's a friendly dog, but who knows? And like the others said, even it he's a friendly dog, who knows if the dogs he runs up to are friendly?

Fun question to the multiple-dog families
JackieMaya replied to JackieMaya's topic in Everything about dogs
This is a quote from my own post above:
Maya taught Pooh Bear that digging is okay until mom tells you to stop at least twice. Jackie only digs when she doesn't think I'm watching. But I think that maybe Jackie taught Maya how to dig initially.
Today the kids were out in the back yard, and I was right inside the back door with the door open. It was real quiet, so I snuck around the door to see what they were doing. Jackie was facing one of their favorite digging spots. Then she started digging because she didn't know I was there. I said "Jackie!" and she stopped immediately and turned around really quick and came up to me. She pretends that she's the perfect princess who can do no wrong. She's just smarter than Maya is and only does naughty things when I'm not watching. LOL And Pooh Bear started digging, and he kept digging until I told him no three times. Pooh Bear is definitely listening to Maya more than Jackie. LOL -
You did the exact thing you needed to do to get your dogs socialized, and you did it in the exact way it should be done! You have nothing to wonder about, other than the woman's lack of intelligence. The only way to socialize dogs is to get them out around people. Talking about stupid people, I was showing my big hot Thoroughbred horse at the state fair one year, and a lady started to push her baby buggy WITH the baby in it underneath my horse! I immediately said "Don't do that! Do you want your kid to get hurt or killed?" And she called ME a bitch! I don't show my horses at the state fair any more because of all the stupid non-horse people that just don't have a clue how to approach or not approach a horse. So you keep socializing your dogs the way you're doing!

Yay! Pooh Bear is back to normal now! I guess all he needed was a Pepto and some more sleep. He played with the girls and ate his supper! I gave him half of his normal supper tonight since this is the first time he's eaten since Wednesday (except for little treats). When I first came in the door after work (1:00 a.m.), I didn't hear anything downstairs (which is where Pooh Bear's crate is), even as I started down the stairs. So I was really scared! But by the time I hit the bottom step, Pooh Bear started talking. Yippee!

Newfiemom, thanks for letting me know about your dogs. It sounds like it's not that uncommon to take a few days to recover from anesthesia. Pooh Bear has really become a momma's boy too. I wuv my widdle Pooh Bear! :iloveyou: :lilangel:

Good girl, Laurel! I love hearing stories like this where one animal is so caring and concerned about another animal (especially of another species!). Give them both extra scratchies from me tonight!

Is Petland a national franchise? I've never heard of one in Minnesota.

I can't believe how easy it is having 3 dogs!
JackieMaya replied to JackieMaya's topic in Everything about dogs
I don't think walking the three dogs will be a problem, because as long as they have their Gentle Leaders on, I can walk Jackie and Maya in one hand, and Pooh Bear (in his harness) in the other. -
I was a little worried about adding a third dog to my family because Jackie and Maya have always been so tight. They're best friends. But they welcomed Pooh Bear with open arms from the minute they met him. There has never been any jealousy or growling or anything like that. The girls were SOOO happy when Pooh Bear came back home after spending the night at the vet. Jackie is very sensitive and has a very expressive face, and if she's worried or sad, you can see it in her face. She was confused when Maya first came home. But with Pooh Bear, there was none of that. I bet her jaw muscles hurt from smiling so much since Pooh Bear has been here! I thought it would be hard to be able to give affection equally to all the dogs. I don't know what I was worried about! They each are getting just as much mommy time as before, and so is Pooh Bear. I LOVE having 3 dogs, especially the ones I have!

I thought I replied to this already. I'm very sorry that Jesse is so sick. It sounds like he's in the best of hands. I'm sending down good vibes for Jesse to start feeling better!

Jackie, Maya and Pooh Bear are out in my fenced back yard for about 6 hours total a day (some before work and some after work). They do lots of playing and running and wrestling. And they sleep REAL good at night.

Pooh Bear was sedated yesterday morning for his hip x-rays, and last night he was still very sleepy and didn't want to eat. Today he didn't want to eat, but he is drinking. He has a tough time pooping, and when it does come out, it's diarrhea. He's still sleepy and doesn't want to play. I talked with my vet as well as the vet who took the x-rays and sedated him. They both said that he's basically having an anesthesia hangover. When he was x-rayed the first time, at my vet's, he didn't have any after effects from the sedation. But this time he's definitely not himself. The new vet said that my vet didn't give him enough sedation to get good x-rays. My vet said to try to give him some hamburger and rice tonight and see if that helps him feel better. The new vet said to give him a little Pepto Bismol and see if that soothes him tummy. He recommended just offering him his regular food tonight. So I'm going to give him some Pepto before I go to work. I wish I could stay home with my puppy. :(

Pooh Bear is having a sleepover at the vet's (update)
JackieMaya replied to JackieMaya's topic in Veterinary information
Pooh Bear was still sleepy from the anesthesia when I picked him up from the vet today. I took him out to the barn, and he slept the whole way. He only barked at one horse, which I thought was great. I tried to get him to go up to my horse, but he thought that was too scary. He was very well-behaved out there, but of course he was still sleepy. One of the real playful German Shorthair dogs out there wanted to play with him, but Pooh Bear just rolled over on his back and said he was too tired. Jackie and Maya were SOOO happy to see their little brother when we got home! When I put Pooh Bear in his crate when I had to go to work, he didn't even bark. He's going to sleep real well tonight. The vet said that he didn't think that the TPO (Triple Pelvic Osteotomy) would work for Pooh Bear, and that the FHO (Femoral Head Ostectomy) would probably be the surgery that the surgeon will want to do. And from what I've read, that's the best one for an active dog who weighs 50 pounds or less. And that describes Pooh Bear! He sent the x-rays off to the surgeon today, so I'll find out the beginning of next week what the surgeon wants to do.
Femoral head ostectomy is removal or excision of the ball portion of the hip joint. After removal, the bone is smoothed so there is no bone to bone contact occurring between the pelvis and the remaining portion of the femur. Removal of the portion of the femur that articulates with the hip joint then causes formation of a false fibrous joint. Post-operative care following FHO surgery is very different compared to most surgical procedures. Physical therapy is crucial to the success of the procedure. Swimming, running playing with other dogs, retrieving, etc is all encouraged starting 7-10 days after the operation. The fibrous false joint that will replace the hip joint will heal with a greater range of motion. Recovery time may be relatively prolonged; often requiring 4-6 months before the dog is using the leg well.
Oh, the vet said I should change his name to Houdini because he kept getting out of his kennel! They finally had to put him in a big crate. Goofy boy! The vet just loves him. -
Normally, my dogs will let out a few barks, and then they'll stop (especially if I tell them to). And they normally never bark at night or when I first turn them out in the morning. But my new puppy, Pooh Bear, has them all more excited than normal, so there is more barking than normal. Having a third dog is still in the new and exciting stage for my older dogs. Pooh Bear is getting real good about coming when I call him, and I've been watching them VERY closely since the cops came over, and if they start barking and won't stop, I make them come in. I think that the people who complained are the people who live directly behind me. They've never had a dog, and they've complained about almost every neighbor at some time in our area about something. And I live in a nice residential area. I told a few of my neighbors that someone had called the police on me, and they said they figure it has to be the grouches behind me. And they both said that they really like having dogs living around them because it makes them feel safer. And they both said that when dogs play sometimes they'll bark! The people who I think called the cops on me called my next door neighbor shortly after I got Jackie saying that she didn't think I was taking very good care of my dog! LOL! She said that my dog had been outside for a long time. My next door neighbor said "well, is the dog barking?" And the grouch said "No." Then my neighbor said "then she must be okay." I got Jackie in February, so it was on the chilly side, but Jackie has an incredible double coat, so cold and snow don't bother her. I let my dogs stay outside until they tell me they want to come in (or if I have to make them come in because they're barking). My next-door neighbor also told me that she saw the grouches throw branches off their tree into my yard behind my trees! I didn't know about that until yesterday! So that gives you an idea of the mentality of the grouches who live behind me. And I'm being polite by using the word "grouch" instead of the word I would really like to use! So I'm on real strict bark patrol now when the kids go outside. If they start barking and won't stop when I tell them to, they have to come in immediately.

Pooh Bear is having a sleepover at the vet's (update)
JackieMaya replied to JackieMaya's topic in Veterinary information
LOL, HF. I wanted Pooh Bear to think he's having a fun sleepover. And he will be sedated, so it'll REALLY be a sleepover! But I'm going to miss my Pooh man tonight! It'll seem real strange to only have the two girls tonight! I'm going to take them for a walk in the morning. They'll love that! -
How fun! I would love to take my three pups on a doggie walk. I think that would be a blast, as well as helping out a worthy cause!

:bday: :new-bday: :BIG: :laola: :Dog_run: Happy Second Birthday! I hope you get lots of treats from mom! -
Yikes! What a busy time that was! I'm very lucky that my vet is 2 blocks away from me. So if I decide to do separate trips for some reason, it takes about a minute to do. On the other hand, the vet that I had to take Pooh Bear to for his new hip x-rays, is about 45 minutes away. But since Pooh Bear is SOOO good in the car, a long drive is no big deal if I have the time.

To all of you who have multiple dogs in your house, what good things and what bad things have your dogs taught each other? Jackie taught Maya that squirrels are the most exciting thing in the universe. But she never was able to teach Maya how to stalk something. Jackie taught Maya that sirens are a very serious thing, and that you're supposed to howl at them (Maya only howls at the tornado sirens). Maya taught Pooh Bear that digging is okay until mom tells you to stop at least twice. Jackie only digs when she doesn't think I'm watching. But I think that maybe Jackie taught Maya how to dig initially. Maya taught Pooh Bear to sit at the back door while Maya gets her harness on. Maya must have taught Pooh Bear to jump up on the patio table, because Maya used to do it, and now Pooh Bear does it. Maya taught Pooh Bear that you have to bark as loud as you can when you're in the house and you see someone walking by in the street, and ESPECIALLY when the mailman puts the mail in the slot! Jackie and Maya taught Pooh Bear that he has to come up to me and sit and wait for slow Jackie to finish her food. Then they all go and lick each others' bowls. Maya taught Pooh Bear to sit on the arm of the sofa and put his front paws over the back of the sofa to look out. Jackie taught Pooh Bear how to zoom around the trees in the back yard.
