1. Most of the faults you list for a breed Jill apply to EVERY breed and all dogs in general. Vicious is a fault in all breeds, if you use it for one breed you should use it for all. In the AmStaff listing, you say that "powerful jaw and body strength can inflict horrible wounds" but you don't say the same thing about similarly sized breeds, even those that originated as guard dogs. Also, you really need to clarify on faults, your site isn't consistant in the least. With some breeds the characteristics aren't seperated, the list just runs on with no notation of it being a fault. The way it is set up is confusing and makes it sound to the lay person that EVERY example of that breed has that trait. Some breeds don't even have faults listed. MeiMei's suggestion regarding phrasing was excellent. I think the main reason that the guide hasn't been mentioned is who would be comfortable taking advice from someone that does barely any research, just skims the surface and allows falsehood myths to be perpetuated as truth? In some cases the spelling of the breed name isn't even right. For a site that uses the title "dogs in depth" it is quite the opposite. For as minimal as the breed descriptions are, I have a very hard time believing that there was 20 minutes of research done on them, much less 20 hours. But if you want us to talk about the guide......... I found at least a couple grammatical errors and some sentances that flat out just don't make sense. There are also a few other things I take issue with:
Consider how you might obtain one. Wherever, inspect the premises for cleanliness. If you cannot travel to the location of the litter and inspect the premises, ask for references and contact them regarding the breeder/rescue/store.
This is the first sentence pertaining to the obtaining of a dog. You have the word store listed. Further down, you list pet stores and commercial breeders as a viable place to get a dog. Those are places that should be avoided at ALL costs. Puppymills, or commercial breeders as you say, are horrible places that should not be supported by anyone. Under rescues in the guide, you don't mention that as an offshoot of being in a rescue that the dogs are already spayed/neutered and vetted. Many times they also have some basic training down. I would elaborate more in your descriptions. Under small kennels, you reccommend that people try to meet the parents of thier pup. That's great in theory, but most small kennels/breeders don't breed thier own dogs together, instead they find a dog that best suits thier dogs traits. Meeting both parents is sometimes not possible because of that. If the breeder does have both dogs, I would be somewhat suspicious. Generally, those who have both parents are backyard breeders and are not doing anything to better the breed. You also don't have a list of questions to ask the breeder, you only suggest asking how long they have been breeding that particular breed and there are WAY more questions that should be asked. You say that a good way to get a referral for a good breeder is to ask a rescue org. reccommended by a national breed club. Huh? I don't know of any rescue that gives breeder referrals. Logically that should read: To find a reputable breeder find one reccommended by the national breed club. Is that what you meant? When you list off the breed groups, you list nonsporting as : "miscellaneous category, just not like the others" It really sounds like you didn't put any thought into that listing. Yes, the nonsporting group is a sort of catchall, but your phrasing is extremely vague. It would be better to describe it as a varied group of dogs that don't nessisarily fit into the other categories. You may have seen the aftermath of dog bites etc, but since your site is billed as encylopedia/reference and not as a personal home page, shouldn't you be offering information in an objective manner? Oh and Dalmatian is still misspelled on your A-Z list.
2. :o Jill, Jill, Jill, I see your breed descriptions are STILL grossly inaccurate. You have not changed any of the blatent falsehoods that we brought to your attention the last time you were here.
3. I'm just going to take this time to say: Ahhhhhhhhhhhh Grant. :iloveyou:
4. We also have to remember that we didn't see the whole training session. Reality tv is notorious for just showing the bits and pieces of situations. There very well could have been praise and proper training, it just might not have been shown. That being said, I don't think this dog has been very well socialized at all. I do also think, based on what I have seen, the trainer needs to be replaced, any trainer worth thier salt trains the OWNER to to train the dog. Does anyone know how old this pup is? I'd be able to guess if it was a larger breed, but age guesses on smaller breeds elude me.
5.
I just got done watching the last half hour of the show. I did notice that the dog (owned by the two guys) had a prong on it when it was at the trainers. They only showed it for a split second but it was definetely a prong. I would definetely find a new trainer. No trainer should ever put a prong on a puppy.
But the clips they showed of the dog squealing were when he was just on a harness. With that being said, I agree with the no prong on a puppy comment. I remember taking a certain former member here to task because she was using a choker on a puppy. That sort of stuff really chaps my a$$. Though if someone was going to be jacka$$ enough to use a training collar on a pup, I'm somewhat glad that it was a prong and not a choke. ( If that makes any sense at all)
6. At first I thought that the mom was a little bit too overbearing, but then I thought about all the football, baseball etc coaches I have seen coaching kids that age. They are way tougher on them. I did notice that before she told him what he did wrong that she did tell him that he did a good job. The trainer for the gay couple's dog didn't seem to be doing anything to the dog to make him squeak, except not mollycoddling him like his owners do. Look at how much they baby those dogs, carrying them everywhere and dressing them up of course the dog is going to put up a struggle when someone tries to treat like him like a DOG and not a dress up doll. I'll have to admit that I am very curious about the drama of next weeks episode. From the previews it looks like the dog in question is the dress up long haired Chi, but since reality shows always twist things who knows.
7. Start small, don't let him have run of the entire house. Doggy proof your living room and put up a gate. Get him an interactive toy, like a Buster Cube or any other sort of treat dispensing toy. Mentally wearing a dog out can physically wear them out too.
8. Great idea DP, I only put it here to give it more exposure.
9. This should probably go in breeding, but I think it fits well here too. (this is OK to pass on as long as requirements at bottom are met) The Backyard Breeders' and Puppy Millers' Big Book of Old Excuses
10. When I was much younger, I taught Phyllis ( our Dal girl) to beg. Or I tried to. I'd take her front paws when she was sitting, put her in posistion , say beg and treat her. She'd let me manipulate her but never did it on command. Forward to Thanksgiving (Which is about a month and a half after I started training her to beg Also keep in mind that I only saw her on the weekends and that my dad didn't know that I was teaching her that.). My father had a bunch of friends over for dinner. Phyllis walked to the person sitting at the head of the table and pretty as possible sat up and begged. After that incident, she would beg on command. A couple years later we got Ivan ( Dal boy) and he was about six months old and a big gangly moose puppy. Well he saw that whenever Phyllis would beg that she would get rewarded so he decided to try it on his own. He fell right over and of course got fawned over.
11. As per usual, I'm up for a bit of aggro. ( Surprising eh?)
12.
This may be off the topic but I heard if u have a mix breed it elimnates most purebred prone health problems?
Nope. "Hybrid vigor" as it is called is a myth. Genetics are genetics, and mixes have the same chance of having problems as their parents. Mixes aren't exempt. Part of the reason that that theory is supported is the fact that many of these mixes aren't tested for the things that thier purebred relatives are. I know there is more info on that topic here on dogo, do a search for "hybrid vigor."
13. :o If no mention that Meg was in that picture was made, I seriously wouldn't have recognized her. The poor dear.
14. Actually, there is no confusion about the bulldogs, K and IlblisslI both have "english" bulldogs. K also has two Staffy bulls and an Apbt.
15. Hey you nutjobs, quit talking about me! And to think, in all of that about me, nobody mentioned my new signature. Nobody likes boogying pasta? I will be moving to Des Moines. Nerds. The casino that is somewhat near there is in Altoona. I'm going to cry myself to sleep( or work rather) because "that woman" doesn't pay attention when I'm talking.
16. So I might be in trouble, I sent them a letter to ask about Sage and their adoption policies.
17.
Wow, she's really pretty! I should bad myself from Petfinder.com, because I always end up finding a dog that I would really like to get, but I DON'T need 3 dogs! Hillside, how can you leave balmy Minnesota? And for balmy Iowa? LOL
Because it's balmier! Last summer was the 4th coldest on record here. Sizzle, come on.................I'll love you forever. Are you sure you don't want to go temp. eval her for me? :diablotin: Jess, how dare you use the bunny against me. Amber, yeah, Kelpie did spring to mind, but they aren't very common round here. Gah, I just want to play with those stupid ears. ( and yes, the more insulting of her appearence I am, the more I adore her.)
18. No, it isn't possible for me to get a dog until I move. Where I live now is dog free and I don't know where I will be living when I move. *sigh* I did show her to him and he thought she was cute too, but I DIDN'T let on how in love with her I am.
19. Ok, she is more than a "couple" miles away but not really far away. And if she is a lab/weim, I'll eat my hat. Those ears scream terrier and I can see maybe some Aussie or ACD in her. Anybody else want to hazard any guesses?
20. Gah, this dog is driving me crazy! http://www.petfinder.com/pet.cgi?action=2&pet=4103146&adTarget=468petsgeneral&SessionID=4223f848229ca41a-app5&display=&preview=1&row=0&tmpl=&stat= I want her! I mean really, LOOK at those ears! I think those have got to be some of the best ears I've ever seen. I saw her profile a couple days ago and just can't stop looking at her :Help_2: I think I've got it bad, I mean, really, I have never posted an "I want" dog on here before. See when I browse PF, I usually end up seeing some really cute dog that is oh....2000 miles away with a no out of state adoptions rule, so it doens't faze me at least not realistically. This girl though is in the state I'll be moving to. *sigh* .
21. This guy has been brought up on the Dal board a couple of times. Some of the members there have run into these "mini Dals" in rescue and shelters and seem to think there is IG or something else in them. I can't wait until you guys get responses from him, he is something else.
22.
BEAUTIFUL DOGS!!! I can honestly say, I've never been much of a Dalmatian fan(not that I disliked them, but I never thought of them as a dog I had to have!), but I think it's because most of the ones I've seen (at work) are obese! :-? And sadly, that kinda put me off to the breed. But we had one in the other day that was in great shape and gorgeous! I was so excited to see an adult Dal in good shape! Her name was Yahtzee! And such a sweetie! I wish we saw more like her and like yours! I do like to look at them. Very pretty! :D
Wait til you see mine... :D And one of these days I'll get pics of my past Dals. Not a fat one in the bunch. I'm absolutely drooling over Sydney's great great grandsire on her dam's side. So pretty. I love his face.
23. If you are that worried, by all means contact your vet, but it sounds like he is just being a bouncy puppy. Does he do this when he tucks his rear end down and zooms around? (those are called zoomies.)
24. Well a) not all breeders have webpages and b) if they aren't listed with the PCA at all, then they might not be reputable. If you contact them ask them if they belong to the PCA and if they don't, ask them why not.
