1. Great idea to do your homework first!! I have one of each, a Lab, Daisy and a Lab/Golden Retriever mix, Chelsea and, so far, what you have heard is correct. Chelsea is very young, but so far, less trouble than the Lab. But, Daisy is Wonderful with a capital "W". She takes so much from the puppy, she is highly intelligent and a very sweet dog. But, she is 3 1/2 and I wouldn't have said this a year ago. Labs take a long time to get out of the "puppy stage". They will chew and get into trouble up until they are at least 3 if not longer. If you can hold out, they become the best dogs in the world!! Looking back, I wouldn't trade her for anything :D My mix is very smart too, and I can see at this age that she is calmer than Daisy. If you get a puppy, you will have to train and puppy-proof your house. They WILL chew some of your favorite things if you're not careful. Make sure you have plenty of toys and things OF THEIR OWN to chew on. There are a lot of sites out there: Check with your local humane society. If you want a specific breed, let them know. They do have pure breds. You can alwasy window shop at www.petfinder.com It is great, you put your zip code in and it will take you to the dogs in your area. You can put in the age, sex and breed you are looking for. Good luck!! :D
2. I don't think they will know until they get the lab results, if then. They think it is irritable bowel syndrome, and I will have to be very diligent in her feedings, which will more than likely include the EN. She was pretty consistent on that, and I'll just have to keep the raw hide from her and be extra careful. I was just hoping that someone has a similiar situation and could give me an opinion on what had worked for them. I appreciate your advice, but I have always fed my dogs the same, and never had problems like Daisy's has had on her kibble. I think it is her personal intestinal problem and will just have to take special care of it. Thank you all for your suggestions and caring words.
3. Gosh, she is still in the hospital??? So sorry to hear that. What is the prognosis? When will she be able to come home?
4.
The low protein could be from all of the blood loss.. She could possibly have an ulcer bleeding
I asked one of the vets about an ulcer and he said that that is an upper GI problem and the blood in the stool would be black. As for the protein, I agree, and so does the vet on the blood loss and the fact that every thing is running right through her. Update: They are keeping her one more night and said I could pick her up after work tomorrow. They gave her a little dinner and she, so far, is keeping it down. But, she still hasn't had her bm and that's what they are waiting for so they can send a sample to the lab. I miss my baby, and so does Chelsea!! She is lost without her.
5. Hmmm.... I asked one of the vets about it when she called with an update on Daisy and she suggested not to do it. She called it the Barf diet and said that she had seen more problems with it then with out it. She suggested that I go back to the EN or a low residue food that Eukanuba puts out. I'm sure the EN is more expensive.
6. Thanks everybody :) The vet called last night and said there was a small problem with her blood work. She is lacking protein and I can't remember the other thing - not the white or red count, but one thing I wasn't familiar with. They have her on antibiotics too. They are keeping her off of all food for now. (Only IVs)
feed raw chicken twice a week
You really feed them raw chicken??? I thought it was full of germs and bacteria and had to be cooked? I guess their system can take it  Just doesn't seem right to me. Alicat, do you only feed raw chicken like K, or other meat?? I would be interested in adding to her dry, especially because of the protein thing. (but I think most of that is because it is going right out the other end) I will also ask my vet about the raw meat. Thanks
7. I didn't think you thought I didn't want the best for Daisy. The EN is a special food that is easy to digest. It is a perscription food. (not put out by Hills)
8. She has been checked for Giardia the last time she was hospitalized. I really think the EN was good for her, and was recommended by our vet.
9. Thanks, Behle :-? I don't really need this now!!!
10. Sure, Alicat.... go to Post: Health (Digestive Problems) Thu Dec 12, 2002 5:35 pm She is a Chocolate Lab and was on EN for a year or more, and now she is just on regular dry Iams w/rice. I also give her extra rice when this starts up again.
11. Well, she is in the hospital. They are keeping her over night with IV fluids. They will do more blood and stool testing if they can even get any stool. God it was so hard to see that vet again... it has only been 3 weeks since you know what and well, I feel a little stupid  I started to get a little upset and my vet (who wasn't even supposed to be there) came over and asked me how Daisy was. I told her it all started right after Trixie... and she said I did the right thing.... I think she thought I was upset about Daisy. I mean, I am. But not that way. It was just seeing her again for the first time after she had PTS Trixie. God what a day :( . Any way. They hopefully will send out some stool to the lab and I hope they will find something this time. Jacsmom, I'm not sure about what you asked???? I don't think this has happened, but am not sure what it is. I assume you mean a twisting of the intestine?? Who knows. She has eaten things before that she shouldn't, i.e., socks, hair bands and etc. It may have twisted things up for her????
12. They will probably keep her again. She is pooping all blood now  We leave in 15 minutes.
13. Well, when I came home for lunch, there were 4 piles of vomit on my den carpet and the hall way in the kitchen was covered in ?????? can't really tell. Think it was diarrhea. Well, needless to say we have a 3:30 vet appointment. I WOULD REALLY LIKE TO KNOW IF ANY BODY HAS HAD SIMILAR PROBLEMS WITH THEIR DOG - I am baffled!!
14. Daisy is sick again!!! :( She started with the diarrhea just after Trixie was PTS. But, we had also given her some raw hide about the same time. So, I'm not sure what is causing this. She gets sick two to three times a year (if not more) and I have chalked it up to an irritable bowel. I think this first started when she ate some socks or whatever she could sink her teeth into. I think her bowels are just shot. We had her on EN forever with Prozyme on top to help with digestion. We very slowly weened her off of the EN and she has been fine up until now. When she gets like this, I get her refills of Endorsob tablets and Sulfasalazine (which I think is an antibiotic?) It doesn't seem to be working this time??? Now today, she won't eat. THIS IS NOT LIKE HER, SHE IS A LAB! I am getting worried. I am also giving her rice with her food. Has anyone, especially lab owners had a similar problem??? This was sooooooo bad a one point, before we figured out what was wrong with her, that we had talked about putting her down. She gets to the point where all that comes out is blood :( She hasn't gotten to his point, yet :-? But probably will. We had all sorts of tests run on her in the past, and this just seems to be a recurring thing with her. Any ideas, similar situations, or suggestions? I really could use your advice. Does anyone think it is because of Trixie?? P.S. She is still on the Prozyme and she is vomiting a little.
15. I used to think the same thing about crates, but now my puppy goes in there on her own when she is tired. I leave the gate open. They feel safe in there. Don't think of it as a cage. Let her get used to it slowly. It really works. Don't close her in at first. Put a bed or nice blanket in there and some of her toys. She will know it is hers.
16. I totally agree. A crate is the way to go. You can even put it in your family room and when she is in it, sit in the same room with her as a comfort zone for her. And as for the special treat, I would get her a kong and stuff it with treats and peanutbutter so she will be so busy trying to get the treats out that she won't notice that you have left! Good luck, and good for you for adopting!!!! :D
17. Well, that's good news!! She'll be herself in no time!
18. Well, I finally got the call and I just returned from picking up Trixie's ashes :( It is so very final now. But, I feel a little better knowing she is home again  I put the pretty cherry box on our mantle with her collar on top and soon we will have a special, custom made urn for her where she will rest......
19. How about Buster Brown and Buster for short! That is my chocolate lab's daddy's name :P
20. Oh, Sure!! I see you removed their last names. I have a chocolate lab and a black lab mix puppy. You will need plenty of teething toys!!!!! I use a frozen dish towel for my baby. She loves it. Good luck, I hope she will be okay!!
21. Wow, that's too bad. Maybe one reason not to buy from a petstore. Also, I'm not sure if the people you mentioned in your post would appreciate having their name posted. (Don't mean to step on any toes, but it was just kind of a red flag to me) I do hope your puppy will be okay!
22. Well, she looks well-rested.  What a sweet baby!
23. Yeah!! Congratulations!!! I'm so happy for you! :bday: :laola:
24. :( Poor baby!! Hope she is better soon!
25. Awl, poor baby. It is better for her to just rest. She will be back to normal before you know it!! I'm sure you're happy to have her home :D
