has anyone tried those citronella collars for barking?? Gunner only barks while we are camping and of course it is usually when the campground is full  so we bought one and only use it for camping and so far it has been great. of course he sleeps with us so he only has to wear it while he is outside. I wondered if any of you had any thoughts on that?? He really hates being on a tie out but it is the rule while at the campground. I know he will get used to it but it is hard for him as he runs free in our fenced in yard at home. :D

I have never used it.. When we had problems with barking our trainer told us to use bitter apple.. say No or Quite 2 tmes and if he barks again spray in the mouth. it should only take a few times as they dont like the taste of bitter apple ( well Zoey does ut most dont )
anyways a few times of that and it should stop them from barking ;)

Citronella Collars should be used for training, not as a deterrent from an unwanted behavior.

You should train Gunner not to bark training by redirecting his attention to you, this will limit and possibly prevent the barking in the future.

It seems as if you are using the Citronella Collar in the wrong context, as a punishment vs. actual good training of the dog.

never thought of that ! good idea kendlyn--
but also could be over excitment int he new enviornment. mine bark when we go campin but they have their nubs going 100 mph and all excited, after ahwile they settle down though

If I left him at home he would have to go the the kennel :( and I dont think that is the answer. The area is new to him with many ohter dogs and kids and lots of exciting things going on however it really is because he is on his tie out. The collar sprays him with a burst of citronella and then he know his barking is unacceptable. we are training him to not bark on his tie out but with a holiday weekend and lots of other campers we needed a quick and painless solution. We thought it was much better than leaving him home alone or using another alternative like a shock collar.

The collar in what I have seen is used primarily as a deterrant and if used correctly it is an excellent training tool and a heck of a lot more effective not to mention humane, than a shock collar. If the situation is new to your dog, then give him time and patience as well as providing him with a stuffed kong or some other form of stimulation. He will also benefit from regular walks to let him explore the new territory, and to reassure him that he doesn't have any threats nearby.

Ok someone come thru for me. I have never heard of Citronella being used for anything other than mosquito repellant - Laurel bays at everything and everyone....do you think this wouold work for her?

I am now trying passion flower...she is still baying at any noise she hears, including the kids, unbtil she realizes and is told to shut up.

i use this one

it'll run you about $140 - $170 but i think it was well worth it. My dog had a problem with barking, but after a couple of sprays with this.. he learned real quick. The benefit is that you can get you give him the redirection stiumulus (the spray) right at the exact time he mis-behaved and it doesn't hurt him... it just kinda startles him and makes him annoyed.

they also make one just for barking, when it detects that the dog is barking, it will spray him automatically. Good if you leave him at home during the day and the neighbors are complaining.

This is the Aboistop collar that we used to sell in work.

It works by a conditioned reflex mechanism (just like pavlovs dogs) so that the dog barks and the spray is released. Most dogs will take a few sprays to realise the association that when it barks, it will get sprayed, but in my opinion its a very nifty device and most importantly humane.
