eggrolyn1223 Posted October 3, 2002 Posted October 3, 2002 I'm sending a list to my mom in the U.S to buy some doggy stuff for us, and I wanted to get something that would stop Duck chewing on the wires and the chair legs, and I've heard of people talking about the Bitter Apple Spray, but I'm not sure if it works.Just asking if any of you have used it and know it works, or at least on your dog. Please answer, I need to hurry up and send the list, cuz she has to go buy the stuff on the weekend, and today's Thursday already. Horsefeathers! Posted October 3, 2002 Posted October 3, 2002 YES, Bitter Apple works wonderfully. It's a crisis in my household of eight dogs if I run out of it. One of my eight, however, likes the stuff. Go figure. I need to add this... it's not necessarily the solution to any problem, but an aid in training. Of course, you'll still want to monitor puppy and correct any undesirable and dangerous behaviors (training is critical!), but Bitter Apple certainly does work in my household as a deterrent (I use it on a couple of my dogs to curb foot licking... they are being treated for allergies, but occasionally they still lick lick lick which creates even more problems such as infections). Carolk9s Posted October 3, 2002 Posted October 3, 2002 I'm sure Bitter Apple works for some even most dogs but my Aussie mix thought it was a tasty topping. What absolutely did work with her was Vicks Vapor Rub. Of course it didn't hurt that I did not mind my house smelling like Vicks :D I let all my dogs take a sniff from the jar before putting it anywhere, each one immediately wrinkled their entire face up in total disgust and backed away. After that, just bringing out the jar would cause them to edge away from me in case I unleased that smell again! I would imagine the menthol in the vicks affects their mucous membranes, it might even cause them mild physical discomfort to breathe it in. Their avoidance of close contact with it was total after the initial sniff. Quote
Guest Anonymous Posted October 4, 2002 Posted October 4, 2002 I used bitter apple for a while with my lab. In the beginning it worked very well. Like other's have mentioned...my dog eventually acquired a taste for it. I think if you could break the habit quickly, it would work well. Quote
Rowie-the-Pooh Posted October 4, 2002 Posted October 4, 2002 Have any of you heard of "YUCK!"? No, im not SAYING yuck....I saw it on an add in DOGFANCY.... It's supposedly a cream you rub on everything you don't want your dog to lick/chew.....? Just wondering...... Quote
deepseasnake Posted October 4, 2002 Posted October 4, 2002 I've never had any big chewers but I'm willing to bet that Vicks vapor rub works miracles  Quote

Guest Anonymous Posted October 6, 2002 Posted October 6, 2002 Hi- Just came across this website + I saw yr post. Just got a puppy + thought I`d make a suggestion about getting dogs to stop chewing/ licking things. I`ve just the juice of a freshly squeezed lime works really well + it`s natural + cheap. Just my 2 cents worth. hope it works for you guys. Quote

Guest Anonymous Posted October 13, 2002 Posted October 13, 2002 I've never heard of using Vick's Vapor Rub- did you think of that or just read in a DOG FANCY or something like that? Is it okay to rub it on your hands? Scooter has an obsession of chewing on hands. Quote
