1. It looks a lot like a Coton du Tulear (sp?)
  2. Why not try an introduction with Zeb and see how things go?
  3. At least now the only damage she can do is to herself. Well, except for teh brush thing.... Maybe she'll get bitten and never come back.
  4. It's generally best not to bring up old threads unless the subject is informational.
  5. My question is why are you asking this person to help you out around the house so much? I would never ask a guest to help me with my dog chores. You wanted her to clean up poop and walk one of the dogs? I guess I always thought that guests should not be expected to help with chores. And yes, I would definately kick Dahlila off the couch for a while.

    Mixed Breed crop/dock
So do you think it's okay for someone to cut off a Labrador's ears, as long as it's done by a vet? A Cocker? Beagle? Weimaraner?
yeah, as long as its done by a vet and there isn't something about the ears that would make a crop a problem for the dog. Cockers and Beagles have such long ears I guess I'd want the vet to make sure it wouldn't hurt them in the long run to have them cropped. I would never crop any dog ever, but as long as it is legal its really no different than cropping any other breed.

    Mixed Breed crop/dock
But I see the cutting up of mixed breed dogs as a big deal because there is no excuse; it is merely for looks.
But it's the same in purebred dogs such as Dobermans or Pit Bulls. Those crops have no real excuse and are also only for looks. Why is it wrong to take a mutt to the vet and have it's ears cropped? It's not like the Doberman couldn't live just fine with its natural ears. I would personally never choose to crop or dock any dog, but I think it's ridiculous to get all up in arms about someone cropping a mutt and then saying it's OK to crop a purebred. Is it ok to crop a purebred lab? Or what about those gigantic keg on legs pit bulls that are obviously mutts passed off as purebreds. Is it OK to crop those, or is that wrong too? I mean, technically they are mutts right? As long as it's done by a vet, I don't see a problem with it.

    Mixed Breed crop/dock
some of those docked dogs are in the thousands of dogs quota that die every day. People butcher them and do botched jobs so add those dogs to the thousands dying.
I believe I specifically said those that are docked by a vet.
Who really cares if some are docked or cropped by a vet at the request of the owner?
There's no harm in discussing it at all, but wasting time trying to stop it is just that. A waste of time.

    Mixed Breed crop/dock

There are so many more awful things that happen to dogs, I don't see how it makes any sense to worry about a crop or dock. Thousands of dogs are dying every day! Who really cares if some are docked or cropped by a vet at the request of the owner? Even if it's not breed standard or doesn't make sense to you, I don't see a reason to worry about it.
  10. Buck's pads don't really get too red usually. Once in a while when it's really cold, he'll pick up his feet every now and again when we're on our walk. I wouldn't worry about it if they're leaving them alone in the house. A little redness doesn't mean anything other then their feet are probably a little cold and beat up from running on the ice. For snowfall, this winter has been pathetic for us too. Only about 50 inches all year. :-? I'm hoping we get dumped on at least once before spring.
  11. This is actually an old idea. I heard a story about it on NPR a long time ago. Unfortunatley The Puppy Channel never took off. Maybe it will this time though.
  12. I think breed clubs should consider an outcross every now and then. It could only make the breed stronger in my opinion. It has become pretty apparent that keeping the breeding books closed and allowing only "pure" breeding is harmful. I think many responsible breeders do believe they are breeding to "better the breed", but they're fighting an uphill battle. The only way to really better the breed sometimes, may be to introduce brand new blood into the mix. But as far as I know, this is never considered to be a viable option. I don't think it could hurt to try anyway. :-?
  13. There are lots of ways to train a dog and there are good things and bad things about all of them. CincoandDahlilasgirl, if you want to use a corrective collar, there is nothing wrong with it, but you do need to learn how to use it correctly. And you can probably tell that there is not exactly a concensus on the right way to use them. But I'm not exactly sure what you want him to do. Didn't you say here that he knows how to heel?
He's already learn'd the basics such as "heal"
So can't you just have him heel when you want him to walk nicely?
  14. People think Buck is a black lab. He's a mutt though.
  15.
i mean really, are people THAT worried about what someone calls their fricken dog?
It kind of sounds like you are:
i think mutt or mongrel is degrading..dont know why..but I do..

there is nothing wrong with calling a dog a shepherd/husky mix or what the heck ever.
Except that in most cases it probably isn't accurate. Usually that would only describe some characteristics of what the dog looks like. In the average mutt there are probably lots more breeds mixed in. I think it's important to remember that so people know they're not getting a Shephard/Husky mix, they're getting a totally unique mix of various breeds.
  16. Good article :D Sums up a lot of the reasons I like mutts
  17.
Just because a dog is in the shelter doesn't mean that it's a mixed breed.
No, but it does mean you can't be sure if it is purebred. This one may have been but I'd say an awful lot of pitties out there (even ones with papers) are not purebred.
  18. I've read this before but it's a great article! It always bugs me when mutts are labeled as mixes of 2 breeds. I realize it's conventient and meant to identify what may be the dominant breed, but I think it's incredibly inaccurate and misleading. When people ask me what kind of dog I have I say I have a mutt who looks very much like a small lab.
  19. I did say generally people know what sort of dog they own.
Later she came in with a Pit Bull she'd gotten from a shelter. The dog was a nice example of a Pittie, but she was told that the dog was a Boxer/Lab mix
If it's from a shelter, nobody can know what breed the dog is. Even Lab/Boxer probably isn't accurate as most mutts are mixes of more than 2 breeds. They're only describing what the dog looks like. So Pit bull or Lab/Boxer would be right.
  20. Maybe it was just a small American Bulldog. Lots of things could stunt a dogs growth. Maybe it was malnourished as a puppy. I think generally the best information about a dog's breed, is from that dog's owner.
  21. Spaying and neutering are such simple procedures that I really don't think you need to spend the extra money on the laser stuff. Those prices sound ridiculous though. If you can be OK with the conventional surgery, I think you'll be able to find lower prices elsewhere.
  22. You could ask the guy if he would sell her to you. Be very persuasive and tell him that she's going to get a great home. I really wouldn't steal his dog unless you really really really think he's not going to care. But if that were the case, he'd probably sell her to you.
  23. Hillside and Rumi
  24. With that much vomitting, I would take her to the vet.
  25. If you're talking about total amount of bacteria in a dog's mouth versus a human's mouth, than I'd say neither is cleaner. But I'd rather be bitten by a dog than a human. A lot of the stuff dogs carry around isn't zoonotic bacteria, so it's pretty harmless to us. It can only effect other dogs or other animals. If you're bitten by a person, you are susceptible to whatever they happen to be carrying. My guess is that is where this myth came about. People noticed that if you got bitten by a person, the bite was much more likely to become infected then if a dog bit you. So they assumed that dogs had cleaner mouths.
