1. I like these They don't have one for mutts, so this is as close as I could find for Buck
2.
She shouldn't be penalized for what she did 40 years ago now. And I don't see any hard evidence that she was a BYB or overbreeding. .
Of course she should! There is no statute of limitations on doing something horrible. Even if breeding 50 litters a year was considered acceptable back then, it doesn't mean it's OK if she was doing it. It means she was as bad as everybody else and should be help accountable.
That's like arresting you now for stealing candy at age 5.
Unless she actually was breeding dogs at the age of 5, it's not the same thing. My guess is she was an adult and should be held accountable whether it happened 40 years ago or 6 months ago.
As other people said it's not impossible to have 150 Championships in 40 years especally if she co-owned them. 150 Champions does not equal 150 dogs that she breed
Co-owning and Co-breeding is not any different than if she owned the dogs outright and bred them. If she co-owned a dog and allowed it to be bred than she is at least partly responsible for that litter. If she is counting dogs she co-owned in the 150 total, then she is responsible for breeding them as well. You can't have it both ways.
3.
Especially if you factor in that breeders back in the 60's and 70's didn't have all the testing and knowledge that we have available now and bred a lot more. Breeding was fairly different back then. The process for responsible breeders in the intervening years has changed drastically.
That doesn't make it right! Backyard Breeding is pretty popular and accepted by a large number of people but that doesn't make it any less horrible. If Rodgers has changed her ways and has stoppped overbreeding, then that's great. But it doesn't make what she did in the past OK.
To get a championship title on your dog is a joke...very very simple.
This is exactly what I thought when I heard that she had bred 150 champions. How hard can it be if she did it 150 times!?
4. I did get ahold of their owner. She laughed and said Boscoe has probably ate stuff worse than that and he's been ok. I did look for some Hydrogen Peroxide but I can't find any around here. I think he'll be ok. I'm not really worried about the gum but he did eat the paper box and everything. It was Orbitz gum. I guess I'll just watch him closely.
5. Help! I'm dogsitting 2 large lab mixes right now and I have a problem. Their owner warned me that one of them is great at stealing food and eating socks so I have been very careful while I have been watching them. So I'm feeling good, thinking I've taken all necessary precautions when I come out of the shower this morning and I see my purse on the floor. I'm pretty sure one of the dogs ate an entire pack of gum! :-? I can't find it anywhere. I KNOW I had a pack of gum in there. Plus, he has minty breath. He also ate part of my chap stick. :-? My pack of birth control was taken out but luckily he didn't eat any of it. I've tried calling his owner and I can't reach her. It's Sunday and I really don't want to take the dog to the vet unless it is absolutely necessary. He's acting fine now. Any suggestions on what I should do? Obviously if I see him get sick I'll take him somewhere. Anything else I should do?
6. I'm watching the Eukaneuba Championships right now and they just awarded the prize for breeder of the year. They also did a little story about the woman who won it last year. Her name is Mary Rodgers and she breeds Dobermans. She said that she has bred over 150 champions! So how many dogs has she actually bred that weren't champions? Does that sound like a ton of dogs to anybody else? :o
7. I think it sounds like fun :-) I'm definately be watching and voting!
8. We have about 10 inches right now. That's pretty much par for the course for us. :) Buck and I love the snow too!
9. Probably not. "Private Breeder" is a pretty broad term. It would encompass anybody breeding dogs who doesn't hold corporation status. So that is basically almost everybody. It's nothing special. It has nothing to do with the ethics of the breeder. Does that answer your question?
10. Dog aggression is normal in Staffordshire Bull Terriers. You should have been expecting it when you got the dog. The breeder should have explained it to you as well. I don't know whether or not this dog should be bred, but the decision shouldn't be made based only on it's level of dog aggression. That would be like not breeding a hound because it was trying to hunt.

How to stud

She's going to do what all selfish people do... exactly what they want no matter the consequences for anyone else. :x
12. I don't see anything wrong with comforting a new puppy who has just had the trauma of leaving it's mother. If you're sleeping downstairs next to it when it's six months old, I see a problem. But not now. Go ahead and do what you feel is right for your dog. Personally, I don't believe in letting puppies or babies cry until they finally stop.
13. It's not that surprising. Most celebrities are of the "bleeding heart" variety. :)
14.
Yeah, but would you ever own a Dalmatian?
I've never met a nice one either. :(
15.
he was petting her under her chin so i think that's why she snapped..cause that is kind of a dogs vulnerable stop(right??) and she bit him on the face.
Generally no. That is actually where I suggest kids pet Buck when they are first meeting him. I've always been told that the chest and under the chin are best. Kids usually like to go over the top of their head which is a no-no.
16.
Where's Court and Kendalyn to set us straight?!
hahaha  Well I don't want to set anyone straight, but I do think that Labs are a very hot or cold issue among dog lovers. Just as it's sort of the "in" thing for families to own them, it also seems to be the "in" thing for people to dislike them becuase of their popularity! Labs are like any other breed of dog. They have their positive and negative traits. But I do think that they're a decent pick for the novice dog owner with a family. Now, on to the topic at hand! I can say I would never ever own a Doberman or a German Shephard. Doberman's just look very odd to me and I can't imagine actually choosing that breed of dog. I can appreciate that other people think they're cute or even beautiful dogs, but I don't see it. GSDs just don't appeal to me at all. I'm sure they're great dogs, but again, if I were going to choose a purebred dog to own, it wouldn't be a German Shephard. I would stay away from most of the small breeds as well. I'd rather have something over 30 pounds at least.
17. This is most definately something you'll want to get under control really soon. It sounds like Pixie needs a very firm hand and some serious rules that you follow very consistently. Obviously, NILIF is a must. It's good that she's only 4 months old and that you realize it's a problem and not cute because she's so small though. You're ahead of the game! When you're doing something to her and she snarls, I would tell her very firmly to stop it and continue what you were doing. When she stops snarling and being nasty, give her a treat and praise. And yeah, you're right to start handling her more so she gets used to it. Have you checked to see what happens if you try to take food or a bone away from her? I would add that to the list of things she needs to get used to.
18.
I'm afraid if they suspect we called on them, they'll do something to the cats - either call AC to take them away, or take matters into their own hands
good point. Best not to burn any bridges I suppose :-)
19. I'd report them. Do you really care what these people think anyway?
20. If it's something I feel comfortable giving him, yes I let him lick the plate. His germs aren't any grosser than mine.
21. That sounds really rough CC. So basically, the driving force behind the rescue is gone, and the people left over trying to run it just don't have the time or passion to do it correctly? I think Bill needs to make some decisions and appoint the proper person to take Pat's place. The rescue needs a focus and a goal oriented person to take it in the right direction again. I'm not sure if this is an idea you can talk to Bill about, but I think it's something he should consider.
22. Sounds like a big decision :-) They all sound like pretty good choices. I would go with either Heidi or Ragu. I think in an earlier post you were really drawn to Heidi, so maybe you want to pick her? She doesn't sound that shy to me. But you're probably not getting a real look at any of their temperments since they're in a shelter situation and except for Ragu, they're still puppies. Can you bring Rowie in and see how she reacts to Ragu and Heidi?
23. I'm so jealous! Someday I want another Standard Poodle. They are awesome dogs! And 6 months old!? I think that's a great age to get a dog. They're out of that really little puppy stage but still a puppy and ready to learn commands. I hope your folks enjoy her! And if they don't you can always send her here to Michigan.... :P
24.
We spent at least an hour talking to them and getting a feel for the situation.
Yes, but talk is cheap. You really can't know if the information you're getting is accurate.
Sometimes it's the animals only chance.
This is a valid point. At leat they get a better chance than staying in the shelter. Hopefully, in most cases, it is better than nothing. I just can't seem to let go of the nagging idea that maybe being euthanized is better than being placed in a really bad home. Do you guys do any follow ups after the adoption Tammy?
25. You could keep him eating the same amount of food if you increase his exercise every day.
