I love this big boy, but do I want three dogs?
JackieMaya replied to JackieMaya's topic in Everything about dogs
I still haven't heard a thing from the Golden Retriever rescue shelter! This is their latest update on Hogan that's on their website:
10/5/04: Hogan has been doining great. At first I thought he had a bad hip or something, but now I dont see any sign of stiffness. He likes to play with tennis balls, wrestle and roll upside down and get his tummy scratched. He seems to have a sense of loyalty to me already and follows me where ever I go. He is easy to handle in the house, once he is done playing around he just kind of hangs out. He hardly ever barks and is real fun to have around. All that said it would be nice if he could find his forever home. Someone who likes a big male that doesn't have to be all golden. I would like to see him in a house with a fence so he can run around and not have to worry about cats bothering him. I also don't think he would make a good match to a home with little kids. (He's so big and has had agression with cats and guards his food a bit) He is just a wonderful dog (no kiddin') but just needs the right match. I hope you are reading this right now and can just give him a chance to win your heart.
-
This is probably a real stupid question, but before I got Jackie and Maya I had always had male dogs. Anyway, do female dogs have nipples if they haven't given birth? Jackie has pronounced pronounced nipples but Maya doesn't. Do Jackie's nipples mean that she gave birth? She was 1-1/2 when I got her, so she would have been a young mom.

Help adding new puppy... Intro to current dog + name
JackieMaya replied to boosiebutt's topic in Everything about dogs
How about "Butter". Then when you call your dogs, you can just call "Peanut Butter" and they'll both come! LOL. I think each of my dogs thinks their name is Jackiemaya, because when I call the girls, that's what I say. Good luck with your new pup! -
Baileysmom, I'm so glad to hear the pups are getting better! That's wonderful news! DAL, I wanna go to the Olive Garden! You'll have to have a glass of wine for me too.
-
HF, I'm glad you finally know what the problem is! I'm sure they'll all pull through this just fine.

Good idea about the baby gates, Courtnek! Kim, I really hope it eventually works out for the two dogs. Hopefully once they realize that it's really nice to have a brother or sister, they'll settle in and become friends. I adopted Maya six months after I adopted Jackie, and I was very lucky. They fell asleep on the same sofa their first night together and they've been best friends ever since. Good luck and keep us posted on how it's going.

I'm so sorry to hear about little Athena! Geez, what a tough time you've had lately. Hopefully the other pups will come out of it okay. Hang in there!

Yippee! Let's hear it for obnoxious! It sounds like Chico is doing great!
-
DAL and BM, I'm so glad that you two live so close! You're so lucky to have each other to lean on for both support and fun! It makes it so much easier to deal with loss and triumphs with another fellow dog lover! Hang in there Baileysmom!

I'm so sorry about Jewls. I hope the other pups come out of it okay. Jackie and Maya and I are all crossing our fingers and toes and paws hoping for healthy pups!
-
I just read about Jewls. Baileysmom, I'm so sorry you lost her. That's so sad. Here's hoping the other pups make a complete recovery.

Yeah, what she said!

Yay! Another one saved! My sister lives in Texas and has a Great Pyrenese who guards her sheep. He's just the sweetest dog! As she's allergic to dogs (even though she also has 3 Irish Setters), she can't groom him, so she gets him shaved once a year.

When I saw the MinPin on one of the Petfinder links, it reminded me of the doggie picnic we went to on Saturday. It was almost all Golden Retrievers (with the oddball mixes like Jackie). But one guy had two MinPins with him. My two girls went up to the little doggies and sniffed them and kept looking at them wondering what they were! LOL. He kept them in his lap most of the time.

I know you have a whole herd of dogs, but would it be possible to put booties on them when they go outside? That way they wouldn't get any possible contaminants on their footsies.
-
LOL! I didn't notice that banner. Well, I'm going to start bring my girls to dog parks, so who knows if I end up finding Mr. Wonderful?!?
-
Oh, how fun! Finding a new puppy! I found both of my girls on Petfinder.com, and I see little dogs on there all the time too. Good luck and have fun looking!

After seeing Cody and Zoey's pictures of their playtime at the dog park, I decided to do a seach for off-leash dog parks near me, and there are a bunch in the Twin Cities (Minneapolis/St. Paul) area, and there are two within 15 minutes of my house! Jackie and Maya had SOOO much fun playing with all the other dogs at the Golden Retriever picnic last Saturday, that I would like to continue to take them to dog parks so they can play with other dogs. I can't wait! I think I'll take them this weekend if the weather cooperates! Hopefully one (or both) of the dog parks have lakes where they can swim too. I can already see that I'm going to be a photo-posting fool once I start this! LOL

The Golden Retriever rescue organization that has Hogan, the big boy I'm thinking of adopting, had their annual picnic on Saturday. Unfortunately, Hogan wasn't there, so we didn't get to meet him. But the girls and I went and just had a blast! There were probably around 50 Golden Retrievers (and Golden mixes) there. I've never seen a happier, more well-behaved group of dogs in my life! I had several Goldens come up to me and lean against me, as if they were saying "You're my best friend in the whole world" which is how most Goldens feel about everyone! And Jackie and Maya did that to several people too. There was no growling amongst any of the dogs, just a lot of tail wagging. Jackie and Maya went swimming in the lake and they had SOOO much fun! And I decided to try letting Maya go off leash, figuring that with all the dogs there she probably wouldn't go anywhere. I was SOOO proud of her! Every time she got a little too far, I would call her, and she would come running full blast up to me with a big smile on her face. They were playing with the other dogs, but were always pretty close to each other. After their first swim, they participated in a peanut butter eating contest. Maya, who's main focus in life is food, was a little too preoccupied with all the dogs to pay attention to the peanut butter. So Jackie won between the two of them. After their peanut butter break, they went back into the lake again. They were probably in the lake for a total of about 2 hours. They finally told me they were tired, so we went home and they crashed for most of the rest of the day. I took a bunch of pictures, but haven't had them developed yet (didn't bring my digital camera), but I'll post them once I finally get them developed. -
Happy Birthday to a beautiful girl! Make sure your mommie spoils you rotten, Chelsea!

Jackie and Maya both got baths last weekend when they were at "doggie camp", and they smelled great afterwards, but just like a clean dog, not flowery. I wouldn't want my dogs to smell like a flower! Of course I even like the smell of wet dogs. I like the smell of dogs and horses.

Is it ok to board your dog at a kennel
JackieMaya replied to tx2478's topic in Everything about dogs
Matty listed some great questions to ask about prospective kennels. I've been boarding Jackie and Maya at a wonderful kennel for about 2 years now. I usually take them there 2 or 3 times a year. I had heard nothing but great recommendations about them from everyone, and I didn't have to make an appointment to see the place, which I think was a big plus. And their vet is the clinic my horse vet works at. The first time I dropped my dogs off there, I had only had Jackie for about six months and Maya for only one month. I cried when I left them. It was definitely harder on me than it was on them. But every time I take them there, they get all excited when we pull up there, and they're happy when I pick them up. I can tell that they had a good time. They have adjoining kennels inside, and they play outside together in one of the big play yards. But if I end up getting another dog, I'll probably check into pet sitting, as boarding 3 dogs would cost a fortune. -

HF, I just saw this thread. I'm so very sorry about Rocco. You have absolutely nothing to feel guilty about. You are a wonderful, caring dog owner, and you gave him a wonderful life! RIP Rocco!
