Guard dog behavior

I have a mixed breed of Chow and belgian shepherd, a very beautiful dog.
I got it when it was six months old, it always had human contact with the family and our friends.
In the past month my house has been robbed twice, the last time my neighbor saw the perp and my dog that did not do anything to stop the intruder.
I understand that the dog did not have any reason to beleive that the intruder was a bad guy since the dog has had friendly human contact all its life. The dog is almost three years old.
My question, is it posible to change the dogs friendly behavior to a guard dog behavior?

I assume you want to change your dog's behavior only in regards to people who shouldn't be in your house, right? :)

I would talk to an obedience instructor or behavior specialist, if you are really serious about this, and have your dog evaluated. Not every dog could or SHOULD be protection trained. A dog who is protection trained needs to be able to tell the difference between people whose intentions are good and whose intentions are bad.

Furthermore, keep in mind that you may be legally liable for a crook's injuries if he breaks into your house and your dog bites him...and I know some insurance agencies won't insure a homeowner with a protection-trained dog.

Sanvean is right. I have a question however...most dogs will bark when a stranger comes by, and most theives avoid houses with dogs, because of the barking. Is it possible your dog knew this person and that's why he made no noise?

I got robbed once by someone I considered a friend, and my dog let him in as well.

I fully agree with the above and would just like to stress.

If you are going to purse training your dog to be a gaurd dog, do it right. See a reputable trainer who cares about the dogs welfare first and results second. Some dogs just don't have the temperment for it so may be unsuited but just as much if not more is required from their handlers/owners. Schutzhund training is more work for you than for your dog and doing it poorly is risky for you and your dog.
