Has anyone ever heard of this breed?

Wow Mei-Mei, too funny! You know people are so different with their dogs than they might be otherwise in "real" life. That's so cute that he has such well cared for dogs! I guess it just goes to show, you can't judge a book by its cover!

8) Is anyone out there interested in Spanish Alanos also known as Alano Espanol from Spain? If so what do you know? Where could you get one, and what do you know of them?

Laugh if you will.... my husband is! He said it looked like someone shoved two sticks up this dog's butt and he's about to tip over forward. :o

I have no personal experience with the breed, but as far as I know, there are only a few Alanos in the US (less than 10, I think). If you're really interested in owning one, you'd probably have more luck finding one in Spain, but I've heard that some of the breeders aren't very willing to sell to "pet owners" or other people who won't use them for their original purpose. You also have to consider the fact that they are a serious working breed, and would require a lot of time to train/exercise them. There is also some debate as to whether some "Alanos" are really descendents of the original breed, or if they're a "recreation" of what the Alano used to be.

I'm not a big poodle fan really, but I do hear their really smart, usually playful, and really good companion dogs, so that I'll give to them of course! But I don't think I'd ever own one, I like BC's, Aussies, Labs, and ACD's best! :D But actually my cuz has a cockapoo, and he's a sweet little dog, just a little cutie. and from what I know of, aren't they sorta like the first poodle mix to come about? So I wouldn't mind if they became a reginized breed (like I said on a prev. thread though, as long as they keep everyone knowledged that their a newer breed and stuff), but with all the other ones, that's just getting a little carried away!!

Well I guess I need to admit that I own a poodle. Please don't laugh, I grew up with poodles, please forgive me. He is technically a miniature but is built like a toy. He is just under 12inches at the withers. He is a beautiful black and is about 16 months old now. I keep him in the puppy cut. He is all dog, in fact he thinks he is a rottie. He goes herding with my acd and my bc/mix. The sad thing is, he does a pretty good job at it and the sheep are terrified of him. They actually give him the respect he wants, which is the last thing we needed in the house. A poodle with attitude, ugh...

Now regarding the poodle mix thing. That annoys me to no end. There are enough dogs in need of homes out there that no one should be breeding mix breeds especially if they do not have a purpose. And unless a dog is one of the best of the breed, purebreds should not be bred either. I really wish people would stop messing with purebreds and leave them alone to be purebreds but then I think that unless someone played with breeding different breeds together, I would not have my beautiful acd.
did your cousin buy him? :o
Yes I think they did... I'm not sure if they got him at a pet store, shelter, or breeder, I have no idea... I should ask them sometime... I'm THINKING it was from a breeder though

I don't know about where you live but in Australia (where I live) Labradoodles are a lab-standard pooble mix. They are recognised breeds and were originally bred as guide dogs for people who are allergic to dog hair. They are registered BUT they are having problems with guaranteeing the non-shedding coat.

Foster, you closet Poodle Pooch!

My mom used to show and raise Poodle's when I was but a mere child. I LOVED everyone of those Poodle's. They were the best dogs.

In college, my friend had a standard Poodle. She was the BEST cattle dog that I'd ever seen. She could out herd the best herding-bred dogs. She was a jewel.

Glad you *came* out!!

Hobbit,

I sent you a private message.

Yes I came out of the "closet" about being a poodle owner. It was scary but I managed to come clean. I feel much better.

You know there is an article that I will have to try and find that states that at one time poodles were used for herding. My herding trainer also says that he trained a standard poodle that was great and could out herd some of the best bc's. Unfortunately, non-herding breeds cannot compete in the competitions. I think one day our trainer plans to hold a non-herding breed herding event for fun.
