1. HI ESS - I think youre on the right track....... Im not an expert on dealing wiht chewing, Ive been lucky that none of mine have been huge chewers (though Bailey seems to love to bite arms and legs off my daughters polly pocket dolls! ) I think you should do the best you can to not have anything out that he can get (some things are impossible I know) and crate train him for when you are gone to keep him out of trouble.... does he do this all the time or when noone is home?? other than that when he chews something - offer him an appropriate chew toy - kongs and hard rubber things are probably best and will keep him busy with treats in them. becareful with the rawhide depending on the type as some kinds can come apart as they get softened and be a choke hazard. if he likes fabric things you may try a dog stuffed toy - I debated whether to get bailey one because i didnt want her to think that meant *all* stuffed toys were fair game - but its actaully worked really well - she LOVES her stuffed squeeky toys and surprisingly doesnt destroy them (some dogs definetely will) I think the trick there is to be sure to name it - so you can teach her that its HER "bear, frog, etc" I hope this helps! :D
2. I really like that, esp with a removeable bottom, but those usually run a bit of $ - I cant really do taht for fosters that I only have a couple weeks..... but I will keep my out for good deals on them
3. DAL - I texted you, but thought Id reply here too since I havent heard back...... monday is great in the morning - I have to pick up kids starting at 2 and then work up in mountlake terrace....... does that work? sorry everyone - we're jsut setting up a day to meet at the dog park  sorry for kind of hijacking my own post
4. Thanks Naomi - I was goign to do that ( I put them in the pen when they go outside to go potty - they do decent with knowing to go outside, but theres still some accidents) but now they know how to get out of that pen! - the bottom half is small holes in the wire, but they get bigger after that and can crawl through! I started thinking I could "get by" with what Im doing, but now it sounds like Ill have them for a few weeks atleast, so Im thinking of making some sort of pen out of plywood maybe? and put in my laundry room..? (its big for a laundry room, but it also serves as my place to store all my props and gear for my sessions, and the general "catch all" for the kids  so I need to do some cleaning and organizing!
5. NO - you are right! today she is one! (I replied to the other post jsut now) *careful looks like youre hijacking your own post
6. Thanks so much Naomi! - and everyone!!! even though I only adopted her 4 mo ago, I cant believe shes already a year! I have too many dogs at home to invite more for a "real party" but Im making her a doggie cake and Ill post pics as soon as I can!
7. majiesmom - Thanks, Bailey did go through training already - she graduated with flying colors....... she is very smart and listens well - even comes when you call her which is rare for a beagle! except pulling seems to be something regular training just doesnt change with her! :o I know prong collars are supposed to work real well, but Ive heard a few times that they probably shouldnt be used on this size dog with super short hair....... thats why I was unsure about them.....
8.
we didn't have a end of summer or fall we just went right to the rainy season!
yes - and Im really not liking it, I could atleast have used a gradual approach or something!!
9. so - I know this was kind of discussed in an earlier post, but what is safe for them to chew on besides rubber things? shes always begging for something in the "bone" aisle at petsmart, but I stopped giving her the hooves that she loves, and I wont give rawhide - had too many choking scares over the years...... what should I get?
10. youre welcome to use the one of bailey in my sig - I can send it to you without the name on it  and I probably have more, if not I can certainly take some - Im a photographer
11. DAL - I just txt you  jackiemaya - thanks, I will definetely be sure to make a big deal aobut her face afterwards - if nothing else itll make me feel better
12. crazycanine - thanks, I appreciate the help - I did try that and the "about face" method for many months...... she never stops pulling, she doesnt seem to care that Ive stopped  it seems she would choke herself or break something before she stopped, she was extrememly stubborn with it. I guess its the beagle in her! courtnek - the part that apparently slips in that brand (it was the sporn one) are two sherpa typ[e tubes that slide on the cord to protect their arms, but I guess it slides up to their shoulders and doesnt do any good...... if you can find anything with the brand of yours let me know - I will keep trying this for now and then see. she hates the part over her nose, but she does seem to walk nice and keeps looking at me to se what to do :-?
13. LOL - yes, youre probably right....... we should plan that soon! btw- her first birthday is friday!!
14. hmmmmmm so there doesnt seem to be anything obvious causing it? I think I would try an oatmeal or other anti itch bath - if that doesnt help and its real bad i would give a benadryl (maybe she got a bite somewhere that is causing an all over itch reaction) ofcourse you could always do the bitter apple stuff, but if its jsut started I would think it would be better to try to find the cause or atleast give a medicine first to stop the itching :-? sorry - Im probably not much help  good luck!
15. well, I went to petsmart this morning and asked to try three different ones they had - something that was called a "no pull halter" but it did nothing different than a standard harness and she still pulled me all over the place...... then I also had the sporn one, and they told me people are returning that one constantly because the little padded tubes dont stay in place and the "cords" under the arms rub them raw..... (ofcourse Im thinking now it could probably be "sewed" in place or something) they suggested the gentle leader (and about 3 people came up to me then and said they use them and love them) apparently dogs can get the snout loop off too easy in the halti one, but the gentle leader tightens better. I didnt really want that because of the fact it looks like a muzzle - I tried it for quite awhile in the store and at first she thrashed around like crazy and Im sure she was cursing me - but before long she was actually walking like an angel! Im still a little worried about the possibility of neck damage, but I went ahead and got it because I can return it within a month if I decide I dont like it........ did I do the right thing or should I have held onto my first impressions?
16. I would love some ideas too!!!! baileys first birthday is this friday and Im planning to make a doggie cake - dog knows I have enough doggies at home for a dog party (9 with all the fosters!!) Id love some more ideas too!!
17. Oh CONGRATS!!!!!!! I am sooo happy for you!! now all that waiting will be so worth it!! cant wait for pics!
18. courtnek - that one sounds interesting...... can I find that one at petsmart or something? I think if I could try each of them on her there, that would be the best bet. I dont have the money to keep trying different products
19. I am about at the end of my rope with Baileys pulling...... I may have posted about it before, Im not even sure now - on the leash she pulls like CRAZY! I have both a "martingale type" collar and a harness (she does slighlty better on the harness, but I think that may jsut seem like because its easier on me!) I have tried stopping and the "about face" methods, I have tried rewarding for slack - you name it - she jsut goes, goes, goes! she is a really good girl, and is very smart and learns quickly with most things, but this just doesnt seem to get better no matter what I do! Im wondering what now? I have heard pros and cons aobut both prong collars and haltis - is it time to try one of those? what do you guys think? for those of you that dont know, she is an almost 1 yr beagle mix about 30#
20. Thanks courtnek - I just found it at petsmart.com for $4.99 a bottle, I have to go there anyway today or tomorrow - I cant wait to try it!
21. Im so excited to try this - now where do i find it, and how much should I expect to pay
22. I too would liek info on the bitter apple stuff - i havent heard much about it, but I havent had much luck with anything else.....
23. hi- I posted in "in a day" about my fosters - and I am hoping some of you with experience can help me. I am fostering a med size "terrier mix" and app 1-2 mo old puppies (6 of them) I am wondering what the easiest/best way of keeping them contained and mess to a minimum - I have an xlg crate they slept in last night, but it and they were a big poopy mess this morning..... I also have a app 4-5 ft square wire/wood pen I could bring in. would those weewee pads help them to go in one specific place or should i be trying to house train them? (and if so- how with 6?) Ive never done this before with so many - and I am happy to be able to give them a warm comfortable home instead of the humane society until they are old enough to be adopted, but I want to find the best way to do it so we retain most of our sanity  and are able to have as much fun as we can as opposed to constantly cleaning up  thanks so much for any suggestions!!
24. LOL Tammy - I know what you mean! (or you know what I mean!) I have said if I researched beagles first i prob wouldnt have gotten one  but bailey kind of chose me and I absolutely love her, but some days are definetely he**! she doesnt bray exactly, but she does have the same many different sounds - ranging from *very* high pitched yips, to deep gutteral barks......
