People never cease to amaze me  Woman Abandons 84 Crated Dogs United Press International, July 07, 2004 DENVER, Jul 07, 2004 (United Press International via COMTEX) -- Colorado Humane Society officials were searching Wednesday for a woman who abandoned 84 Labrador retrievers packed into crates, the Denver Post reported. The dogs were found in a rural area north of Denver after the property owner called authorities Saturday, Larimer (County) Humane Society spokesman Cary Rentola said. Rentola would not release the name of the woman or that of the man on whose property she left them, as the investigation is ongoing and the society is pursuing animal cruelty charges. He said 20 of the dogs 34 puppies were euthanized because of poor health or behavioral issues, he said. Investigators suspect the woman was operating a puppy mill operation to sell dogs to pet stores. Humane society staff members will nurse the surviving dogs back to health before putting them up for adoption, Rentola said. http://www.homeagainid.com/news/article.cfm?storyid=14507

Does your male act aggressive at ALL when your female is not around?? You may have to consider taking them to the park seperately (I'm sorry...not a big help, I know  ) Also, have your dogs been altered? Intact males will tend to act more aggressive towards other male dogs in a group situation...

Thats a great idea Shara! actually, my son was in Kindergarten this year, and our county Animal Services department visited his school, and educated the children on proper pet care, and behaviour around strange dogs...I thought that was cool...they sent all the kids home with a coloring book that summarized everything they learned, and literature for the parents....and what was really awesome about the visit is that the dog they brought with them to demonstrate to the children, was a beautiful CGC Pittie !

pitbulls kill shelter cats... I don't get this story!
Smooshie replied to pitbullEmily's topic in Amstaffs & Pit Bulls
I wouldn't trust my Boxers unsupervised around cats....they have very high prey drive...especially my female. In the last two weeks they have stalked and killed a possum, a rat AND a squirrel....I'm sure they would cheerfully do the same to 20 sick and virtually helpless cats if given the chance  (funny...they don't have any pitbull blood in them...go figure  ) On a side note, I'm SURE my neighbors hate me, because now before I let "the kids" out at night, I flick my outside lights on and off, bang the door, clap my hands and jump up and down....just to give any poor creature who might be prowling my backyard a chance to escape under the fence before I let the brutes out  -
awww...what a handsome guy! birthday slurps from the "Boxer Bunch" :bday:

When you were little did you ever....
Smooshie replied to __crazy_canine__'s topic in Everything about dogs
:o oh geez....yup...I ran the entire gammet.....first I went thru a cat phase....drove my mother crazy meowing and hissing at everyone...I'm sure I STILL have relatives that think I was an insane little girl.....then I was a dog....even had my dad build me a "doghouse" in the yard so my other strange friends and I could pretend we were puppies  ...and THEN I was a horse....used to gallop around the yard jumping over things like a showjumper....then once I was past all that (around 8 or 9 yrs old) I pretended to be a veterinarian... -
CC...as far as the vet bills are concerned, the rescue group pays the bills for their foster dogs...you just have to get them there. From my experience most rescues keep a running tab with certain vets and send all of their dogs there...you would have to verify this with the rescue organization you choose to work with, just to be on the safe side. There need to be more people like you out there....you're going about this the right way....weighing all the options and thinking it thru....just remember, if it doesn't work out for you right at this moment, you can always look into it down the road, once you're finished school and financially independant...and you'll have all this knowledge to back you up :D ...There will always be dogs in need of help! Good luck hun...I wish you the best!

Fostering is a wonderful thing to do! I, however, like Cheeky, could never foster because I would have such a hard time letting them go!! It is a huge commitment though!...as mentioned above, some fosters end up being long term....what would happen when school started up again? Would your mom be willing to care for the dog during the day while you're gone? Fosters are also usually responsible for transporting the dogs to and from any vet appts. that they might need during their stay. Would you be able to make arrangements for this ? Just a few things to think about... Also, you mentioned you live in an apartment , so I'm assuming you rent. I would definately make sure that the landlord is aware and ok with the idea of you fostering in your residence as well....before you make the commitment to foster a dog. Other than that, I have nothing to add...I think it is great that you would consider helping in the re homing process of these rescue dogs! BOTH my furkids are rescues and were in wonderful foster homes before coming to live with me.I consider these people to be angels  . Keep us posted and let us know what you decide :D

Ooooh...OUCH! I know how that feels....I got bowled over by a over zealous Dalmation at the dogpark once. He was chasing a ball...I just happened to be in the way :-? ......yup, I was pretty "graceful" that day  its great that Beau has such a great recall though...being a new dog to your pack. Keep working with him.......and wear goalie pads  Hope you feel better soon :D

 This makes me sooooo angry! LC, it sounds to me like he shot the dog not because it was merely running loose, but because he thought it was a PIT running loose. Its disgusting.....I wonder if he would have been so quick to fire his weapon if it was a Golden , or a Chihuahua?? This stereotyping of breeds has got to stop "it looks like a pit, therefore it MUST be vicious...better shoot it just in case" :x

morphine here (if its the same thing) is so tightly regulated you cant even get a prescription for it. You have to be IN the hospital to get morphine, and in some major extensive pain.
You absolutely can get a prescription for Morphine. Usually when pharmacies dispense it, it is in tablet form and goes by the name MS-Contin or Oramorph. I worked in a pharmacy and dispensed it often.
I don't know much about U.S. regulations, but my father in law lives in Canada and has a prescription for Morphine, and I find Canadian drug regulations are usually stricter than the U.S.
My dogs hate Pepto, but it does work... Something that works better for me, and they actually like. Canned pumpkin and plain yogurt. I give 1 tablespoon of each for a 50 pound dog, so you could probably double it. This works a lot quicker than the pepto, and the dogs eat it willingly... :D
Yup, I use the pumpkin and yogurt method with mine too. They're such picky eaters, I can't imagine trying to get Pepto into them....they sure do love pumpkin though  I actually use it as a regular part of their diet (once a week or so) just to help their digestion.....

Teenagers torture, kill puppies with fireworks
Smooshie replied to eric's topic in Everything about dogs
 yes, you have to wonder what kind of parents/upbringing these kids have that they think something like this is "fun"???...I think both the delinquents that did this AND the parents of the little trolls should be severely punished.....and you're very right Tammy...I don't think anyone with so little conscience and human decency would stop at just torturing animals...what happens when the "thrill" of THAT wears off?? :x -
Yes I believe this link was posted here quite awhile back....from what I understand, and according to the genetics of the breed and Boxer standard as it is today....these "black" Boxers are either just VERY reverse brindle...or something else has been thrown into the mix, somewhere. :-? like this black and tan guy....LOOKS like a Boxer, but somehow I don't think he got THAT particular coloring from pure bloodlines...

Wow...this got heated quickly...might as well throw my 2 cents in.. I think ANY dog irregardless of breed, that shows any sign of uncontrolled human aggression should be put to sleep. Its sad, and its not neccessarily the dogs "fault" so to speak, but its a liability waiting to happen, and I would rather (as heartbreaking as it would be) have my dog humanely euthanized rather than wait for it to maul someone and end up shot by police. There's a difference between unprovoked human aggression and "protecting its owner/property" Any legitimate rescue will euthanize a dog that shows an unstable temperament....regardless of breed.

You name it, I've tried it.... I really don't like choke collars because my Boxers have decided that lack of oxygen is well worth it if there's a cat or a squirrel involved  Yes yes...I know...bad leash manners...believe me its a work in progress.. GL worked well with Loki for his initial training....at least it kept him from pulling my arm out of its socket until he learned we were NOT running the Iditerod (sp?). Now he has graduated to a nylon martingale, which he walks very nicely on (unless he sees a squirrel or cat). He could probably do just fine on a flat collar, however I worry that he will slip it and run if he sees something too tempting to pass up the chase. His prey drive is exceptional. Lyra didn't take so well to the gentle leader...in fact she got quite neurotic over it, so rather than freak her out more, I opted to buy her a no pull harness....it works wonders. I do not use prong collars on my dogs, NOT because I think they are cruel or wrong in any way, its just like the GL I get tired of all the gasps of horror from people when they see the "big mean dog-that-needs-a-muzzle-or-pinch-collar" coming

also....what kind of dog is it ? and I couldn't tell from your post...is it an indoor dog, or is it outside all the time ?

I need you guys to help me convince my parents...

Oh look......even MORE "frankenpuppies" :-? http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?file=/chronicle/archive/2004/06/26/HOGRB7B24R1.DTL I'm with Cairn on this one....It's really not so much about if its a mix or a designer "breed" Its more about the out of control pet population.....do we really NEED 30 new breeds of dogs when there are millions dying in shelters each year?? And lets face it....these FAD dogs are just that..FADS. People seem to want them because they are the NEW thing...like a clothing trend...and are willing to pay ridiculous prices for them. quote from the above article:
Part of the reason people are flocking to the exotic crossbreeds is the rarity factor -- to have something new, something that everyone else does not have.
Because of this, inexperienced breeders (and I use this term loosely), are jumping on the bandwagon and turning out litters just to feed the demand (so I highly doubt the majority are breeding for quality).....so then what happens when the novelty of the newest designer breed wears off...or a newer "better" breed pops up??? once again the shelters are full of displaced mixes. Sadly, this happens even to our established purebreds. look what happens when a certain breed is romanticized in a movie or tv show ..(ie: Dalmations, Pugs, Goldens) all of a sudden EVERYONE wants one, but nobody takes the time to really research whether this particular breed is right for them...it just "looked SO cute" in a movie  . Suddenly breed rescues and shelters are overrun by unwanted dogs, because they "aren't so cute" anymore, or lo and behold, they weren't exactly like the dog on tv <sigh> If people don't want shelter dogs, well ok....but why not try a purebred rescue??? There are just SO many unwanted dogs in need of homes....why support BYB's?? sorry....got off on another rant there  -
(((((((HUGS))))))) HF....so sorry about the sudden loss of Boomer
