mouseatthebusstop Posted December 19, 2004 Posted December 19, 2004 TAKEN FROM DOG AGE [color=red]Just because they're hidden in wrappers and boxes, don't assume that chocolate confections are inaccessible to your dog. Chocolate can be poisonous to your dog, even when ingested in small amounts, and your dog can still smell chocolate even if it's hidden in wrappers or packaging. Tuck packaged treats away so your curious pet can't tear into them when left unsupervised. If you notice any signs of chocolate ingestion Quote
imported_Kat Posted December 19, 2004 Posted December 19, 2004 Nice reminder at Christmas time Mouse. The worst case I ever saw was a 16 week old German shorthaired pointer called Ludwig who had a few chocolate buttons fed by the 3 year old kid. Poor ludwig was a very sick little puppy with a temp of 106 and was constantly vomitting and having diarrhoea. I condemn dogs getting chocolate totally! Quote
courtnek Posted December 19, 2004 Posted December 19, 2004 what is in chocolate that causes the problem? the only twho things I can think of are cocoa, and caffiene.... Quote
imported_Kat Posted December 19, 2004 Posted December 19, 2004 Its an alkaloid called theobromine that causes the toxicity as dogs and other animals can't break this compund down as quickly or effectively as humans. Its like caffeine in structure but more dangerous as it acts as a heart stimulant through the release of adrenaline which causes severe tacchycardia (increased heart rate). Quote
JackieMaya Posted December 20, 2004 Posted December 20, 2004 Good reminder! I'm a bona fide chocoholic, and I always keep my stash either in the freezer or in the cupboards. Quote
