Pitbull story...

I was going through an old photo album and talking with some cousins last night and we came across a picture of my aunts dog "reefer". (dont ask)

Reefer wasa beutiful red pit and was the "kids dog". he was pretty much our baby sitter, designated seeker, for hide-n-seek, a great tag partner... (wasnt very good at staying frozen) and bar none the best friend we had as kids. my aunt had 2 sons and they had money so there were tons of toys and things like that at thier house so all of the aunts and uncles would bring thier kids there on weekends it was our favorite times. Reefer loved the time he got to spend with us... he had to to put up with all the crap we wanted to do.. dress him up, chase him and have him chase us, ride on his back, play in his dog house, drag him all over the yard... he took it all in stride. he was also very good about keeping us out of trouble. I remember one time imparticular my youger cousin maybe 2 at the time was wandering around the yard by the fence when a stranger came over to the fence and called her ove to him. Reefer was a big ol' pussycat but to see him that day you would have never believed it. He ran over to the fence jumped directly between her and the guy and showed his teeth something fierce. the guy backed up from the fence and then Reefer (are you ready for this) grabbed my cousin by the hood of her shirt and pulled back to the portch... If i hadnt seen it with my own eyes i wouldnt buy it. That stands out in my mind mostly because missing kids was a pretty regular occurance at that time and Reefer probably saved her life that day. He lived to the ripe old age of 15 and then died peacefully one night. He always slept on the main floor of the house it was his duty to protect, he would pace the floor throught the night and then curl up in front of the stairs on his mat. but that night he went up stairs and slept in my cousins room. He was a really good dog and i just thought i would share his memory with you guys.

they KNOW RNP, they just KNOW......I dont know how they know, or if we'll ever understand how they know, but they DO......he may very well have saved your cousins life that day. Freebe and Alex both went
ballistic when a so-called "animal control" person showed up at my door...
they just seem somehow to know the good guys from the bad. Both of them barked when someone came to the door, but this time they SNARLED.
Full face teeth out "we-will-bite-you-if-you-come-through-that-door."

I think that's a big part of why we bonded with wolves in the first place.
They have senses, and sensibilities, we dont have. Reefer was an excellent
pet and a good protector, knew his job and did it well....

Sweet story!! thanks for sharing!

I agree courtnek... and it was so weird because he was the classic pit bull; ULTRA-friendly to everyone. never met a person whos crotch he didnt want to sniff or akid whos face he didnt want to lick. but that guy. Looking back now i remember things about that day that would set off alarms but at the time.... That is just one more reson i feel that kids should grow up with dogs. Cats are nice but you cant beat a dog for companionship and protection. Whats a cat gonna do in a similar situation?
Another story that really gets me:
His name escapes me now but he was an APBT mix, my the family got him for free from some guy down the street. "the best dog money didnt buy" he would always say. Well one day when he was gone to work his wife was home with the kids. the kids were upstairs napping when one of her husbands "friends" came by. They dog was normally kept outside but today for some reason (i say fate) she let him in and he was asleep in the kitchen on the cool lanolium floor. The front door was open but the screen was closed and locked. anyhow she didnt know him even though he introduced himself as a good friend of he husbands so she spoke to from a distance and didnt approach the door. HE smiled very nicely and had a very pleasant manner about him. When he asked the whereabout of her husband, she said he is at work and wont be back until this evening. The friend smiled and then said "well that too bad" as he reached and snatch the door open andd started inside. was in shock and barely noticed as the dog streaked past her and launched at the guy! the dog took him down and then trotted back to her side as she sat in shock and crying. The guy got up again and started toward her, the dog once again went at him and took him down. The wife was crying hysterically, the kids heard the commotion and came down to see the tusseling ran upstairs and called the police. As the husband came home he found the cops and the wife in the living room the dog was sitting in the middle of the floor being petted by the police and the guy was at the hospital and on the way to jail. From the guy had been stalking around the tri-state area and had already attacked, raped , and killed 2 other women. "but" the cop said "they didnt have a pit bull at home".

That dog has more pictures in the family photo album then the kids do.
When you watch scary movies people that get killed never have a weapon or a dog. I have kids so i wont have a gun in the house but I will always have a dog. because they are better then a gun, you cant use a gun if your sleeping. your dog cant be wrestled from you and then used against you. and you never have to reload a dog.

absolutely correct. They seem to know, when people are meaning harm and when they're not....And yea, you're right. I saw a show with a police chief who said that the best protection you can have is a dog. Doesnt matter the size, weight, or ferocity. The average burglar doesnt want to deal with the NOISE that dogs make - it's too dangerous. One of the neighbors might hear it and call the cops....he said that there is no electronic security device better than a dog...unless you are storin Rembrandts or Picasso's at your house, most burglars will avoid you.

For personal safety, I saw a show on Animal Planet where the dog in question was a little guy, a cocker or something about that size..
someone broke in her house and the lady was all alone, older and afraid.
This little dog LATCHED onto his ankle and WOULDNT LET GO...no matter what he did. She was able to call the police while the dog distracted the
intruder, he finally gave up and took off. He couldnt get past the little
guy, to get anywhere near her....

Oh..sounds like that dog was loved by everyone. I wish more dogs had a happy home life like that. :P

Speaking of dogs and protecten. I was watching some show called Miricle Animals or something of the sort. And this woman was home alone and very very pregnant. Anyways she lived out in the country so there were no neighbors very close by and her Hubby was a work. Well I guess they kept there big dogs outside in a kennel of sorts, and by "big" dogs I mean they had 3 or 4 german shephers and Dobermans. But they had a smaller dog that they kept inside, I think it was a cocker but I'm not sure, but it wasn't a big dog. Anways I guess the dogs outside were barking and barking but the woman didn't think anyting of it. But then the dog in the house was barking at the basement door and some guy came threw the door. Apparently he broke in threw a door in the basement that wasn't very secure. The man beat the woman and tried to rape her but the cocker kept bitting the guys leg and attacking his face. The woman finally got away to call the cops and they came and arrested him. I guess this guy went around houses that had no neighbors and would attack women who were alone. But it goes to show that dogs are great protectors. But I hope thoes people learned that dogs in kennels outside are NOT good watchdogs.
