I am currently training my Staffs to use a Smith and Wesson..it is not going well :( (Reloading is difficult without thumbs!)

I have measured thier Jaw strength at 1 especially loud "owch" per sqare inch [/quote]

So, K, if you are teaching the Staffs to use a Smith and Wesson, what are you teaching the Saints to use? A Bazooka????

Pit bulls don't have "lockjaw"... if they did they'd come with a key  There is a key for anything that can be locked, so unless there was a key produced with a more recent model of pit bull than mine, their jaws don't lock.
Seriously though, a pit bulls jaws are anatomically (whoa, big word) the same as any other dog's jaws... there is no locking mechanism. Pit bulls do, however, have a strong desire to never give up. That's where the "locking jaw" myth came from. When they bite something while in drive, whether it's a bulls nose, another dog, or a tug rope, they won't let go until they want, or until you make them. They have an incredible desire to never give up, probably brought on by so many years of battling against species much bigger and in some cases stronger than themselves. Many people think that if a pit bull won't give up a toy, it's "locking onto it", when in all reality, it just doesn't want to let go. Of course, people also perpetuate pit bulls as being people aggressive monsters, when in reality, human aggressive dogs have not been well tolerated in the breed's history, which has led to the being (for the most part) a stable, people friendly breed. A pit bull that will bite (or show aggression towards) people is usually doing so because it is a fear biter, and is biting to scare away something it perceives as a threat. They have the "I'll get you before you get me" mentality.

A locking jaw would have to be physically different from a regular jaw, the bone would have to be designed to lock or something. Dogs do not have this adaptation, it probably would not be very useful to them as if they "locked" on to say an elk in the wild they would not be able to release to avoid a deadly kick to the head. No dogs have locking jaws but medium to large dogs do have powerful jaws and some may be quite tenacious, possibly contributing to the myth. Hope that helps Lefool.

that myth alson comes from hang-time contests, people see these dogs jumping up an hanging on a stick for half an hour or so and think that its jaws must be locked.
I still think we may have been a little too rash with this guy. A lot of people really dont know about the breed, its up to us the educated ones to tell them the truth.
