Angelboddy, I think the squirrel was an adult. It was so pretty. But I know that it's just instinct taking over. Jackie is a great stalker, very quiet and determined, and she's VERY athletic. But when Maya sees a squirrel, she starts barking and carrying on. One time Maya was stalking Jackie, going very slowly and deliberately with her head down, until she was about 10 feet away from Jackie, then she just put her head up and trotted up to Jackie. Maya hasn't figured out how to END the stalk. Goofy girl.

Meehs, I brought up the website for Benda Photography, and I couldn't believe the quality of their portraits! They really capture the personalities of all the dogs. I'm definitely going to have them do a portrait of Jackie and Maya one of these days. They're on the other side of the Twin Cities from me, but that's okay. I don't mind a 30-45 minute drive! Thanks for letting us know who the photographer is! For everyone else who would like to view the pet portraits Benda Photography takes, here's their link: http://www.bendaphotography.com/

Good luck with getting Duke! I'll keep my fingers crossed for you!

Jackie killed her first squirrel today. When I got back from PetSmart with Jackie and Maya, I just let Jackie out of the car without a leash because she won't run, but I had a leash on Maya. Well, Jackie jumped into the bushes in front of the house, a squirrel jumped out and ran underneath my truck, and to the tree. Unfortunately, the squirrel didn't make it UP the tree, and Jackie got it. I yelled at her and she dropped it, and both girls left it alone then, but it was dead. :( She probably broke its back. Jackie is the sweetest dog in the whole world, but if there's a rabbit or squirrel, her hunting instincts take over, and she's extremely quick and athletic. She had previously killed two rabbits and a little shrew (or something like that) in the yard.

Meehs, until you can post pictures in here, I went ahead and put the picture of your boys in my Woofit album so that everyone here can see it. It's SUCH a great picture. Nostalgias friend went bye-bye today
JackieMaya replied to Angelboddy's topic in Everything about dogs
I'm sure glad that I got Maya for Jackie! They fell in love and became best friends by the end of their first day together. I think that all dogs should have a doggie playmate, but I know that isn't always possible. Good luck in talking your hubbie into it! Give Nostalgia hugs from Jackie, Maya and me! -
Maya and Jackie both decided that frogs are just plain icky! There was one hopping around the other day, and they both ran over to check it out. They each smelled it and walked away. They didn't even try to pick it up. Now they don't even pay attention if they see a frog. But they LOVE to eat bugs!

My family has always had either Yellow Labs or Golden Retrievers, and from what I can remember, they were all purebred (or close to it). Now I have two mixed-breed dogs who I adopted from a rescue shelter, and they're absolutely wonderful dogs. Jackie (the black one) is Golden Retriever/German Shepherd/Collie (we think; she was rescued from the pound so there was no history on her). And Maya is Golden Retriever/Husky (she was an owner-surrender so I know that's her mix). I've always loved Flat Coated Retrievers even though I've never had one. My dream was always to have two dogs: a Golden Retriever and a Flat-Coated Retriever. Well, I have two Golden-mix girls: one is black and the other is gold, so I guess that'll have to be close enough!

What things have your dog's destroyed??
JackieMaya replied to Malamum's topic in Everything about dogs
Socks Diet Coke cartons (their favorite inside "toy") Maya attacks the mail sometimes when it comes in the slot And they've dug some holes throughout the yard -
What cool pictures! I love seeing swimming doggie pictures! I haven't been able to take Maya swimming yet (I would have to have her on a long rope or something because I can't trust her off leash), but Jackie loves to swim.

The trials and tribulations of having a fence jumper
JackieMaya replied to JackieMaya's topic in Upbringing
Well, I had a fencing company come out to give me an estimate on raising my fence to 6 feet. I have 265 feet of fence, and it would cost over $3,500! So I think the cable will work just fine! Maya can get TO the fence but she can't get over the fence on her cable. I ended up getting one of those rectangular loops (I call it a barrel hook). It has a little barrel-shaped thingie that you move down over the opening after attaching it to the cable. And I even tightened it with a wrench so it can't get loose! I watch the whole time my girls are outside, so if they happen to get tangled up (that happens sometimes when they get wrestling), or if Maya gets caught on something, I can fix it immediately. When it's time for the girls to go outside, I just hold up Maya's harness, and she starts wagging her tail and smiling, and puts her head in the harness because she knows she gets to go outside and play. And she's the same way when I put her citronella anti-bark collar on her at night. And by the way, she's not barking at night any more! YIPPEE! Here's a picture of Maya having fun on the end of her cable. Good for you for taking her in and trying to find her owners! My brother and his family live in Las Vegas, and one day they were walking their Cocker Spaniel in the park and saw an adorable Eskimo dog tied to a tree. When they were done with their walk, the dog was still there. They went home and came back about an hour or so later, and the dog was still there, so they took him home, and he was a wonderful little dog who got along real well with their Cocker. Unfortunately, he died six months later from a heart attack or something.

Good luck with getting her! And I know what it's like to have a dog that likes to run. Maya would be gone in an instant if she wasn't tied up when she's in the back yard. I think it's the Husky in her that makes her a runner. Jackie wouldn't even think of going over the fence. If you have a dog that likes to escape, you have to find ways to deal with the problem. Some people! Really makes you mad when they don't care, doesn't it?

Courtnek, thanks for the advice about getting rid of the gloves. I hadn't thought of that! They're in the garage, out of the dogs' way, but I'll throw them out!

Spark is adorable! I LOVE Goldens!

I love tuna! But I don't know if Jackie and Maya would! Cracker, the Golden I used to have, LOVED to chew on ice cubes. If we would jingle ice cubes in a glass he would come running. I gave Jackie and Maya ice cubes today, and they had no idea what to do with them. Oh well.
-
I'm so glad that Rocket is better! That had to be quite a scare for you. I always feel so awful when my babies are sick or hurt. Geez, I hope Jackie and Maya don't start eating frogs! They like to eat bugs. The Golden I used to have, "Cracker," used to like to chase frogs, but he wouldn't eat them. You would see him with his nose to the ground, then his head would pop up and then back down to the ground. It was hysterical watching him chase frogs around the yard.

It's been 80 humid degrees here, so my two hairy girls are pretty laid back now that it's hot too. They'll run after a squirrel, but then they come right back and lie in the shade. They aren't eating as much either because of the heat. When they come in, they like to lie on the hardwood or concrete floors to keep cool, and I keep the air conditioning on too (for them AND for me). One game that they both like to play inside is "hide under the blanket." I'll throw a blanket over them and they'll get goofy and play. And if I put the blanket on me, covering my head, that gets them going too. Here is what my girls look like most of the time during the summer. Now I have an umbrella on the table so that it has more shade. Jackie's favorite toy is a hard rubber ball that lights up and makes sounds (like car alarm sounds) when it hits the ground. They can't chew through it. And she will throw it herself because she knows it makes noise when it hits the ground. Jackie and Maya like to play tug-of-war with their Kong ropes. I have one that's about 2-1/2 feet long, and they'll both end up grabbing on to the same end and play tug. Goofy girls! And of course, they love to chew on sticks and branches that fall off the tree. Here's a picture of them playing tug-of-war. The trials and tribulations of having a fence jumper
JackieMaya replied to JackieMaya's topic in Upbringing
I was thinking of raising my 3-1/2 foot chain link fence to 6 feet, but actually having Maya on a long cable is working out just great! Before I started tying her up outside, it used to take me 20 minutes sometimes to catch her in the yard if she didn't want to come in yet. Now she comes in when I ask her to, and she and Jackie still have tons of fun running and wrestling and playing together. So it appears I have solved the problem! And who knows; maybe if I made the fence 6 feet Maya would still jump it! Maya and Jackie are both spayed, but Maya will hump Jackie once in a while. Maya is the dominant one of the two, but that's really the only dominance-type thing she does with Jackie. And Jackie is a very submissive dog, so she lets her.

Awww, they j ust love each other! I love seeing dogs being best pals and playing together. Those are great pictures!
