1. Thanks so much for you time Cynthia. Don't let being taken in by Naomi discourage you. You sound like you do a fantastic job! I'm being pesty and have another question though. You mention "they", did both Naomi and Justin come to see you? My understanding is that Justin was away in Iraq when these aqusitions of new dogs took place. If I'm correct, then I'm curious as to who she bought with her??????
2. All the doggies are very cute. Though, boy that dobe is huge.
3. Unless you caught her in the act of actually peeing, she wouldn't have known what she was being yelled at for anyway.
4. CC, Cynthia is not the enemy here and I don't think you have any right to be so critizing. Based on Michelle's call to her she has come here to answer any questions we might have. NOT to be insulted, given the third degree or told that she did the wrong thing. Given your post, I would't be surprised if she pisses off and tells us all to get stuffed.
5. Cynthia, I don’t think anyone here blames you. I think everyone is still trying to get their heads wrapped around the amount of lies that have been told are just trying find out as much info as possible. I do have a question though. You mentioned above that Boonie had a heart murmur. Naomi told us all that she had have him PTS due to a severe case of heartworm that was untreatable. There is obviously a big difference between a heart murmur and heart worm. Can you confirm which was the case? I’m not having a go at you at all – just trying to work out if the circumstances surrounding Boonie being PTS were lies too.
6. :( I’m unfortunately not surprised to hear about Zoey, however it’s still very disturbing. I can’t get over how someone can have such a blatant disregard for their animals’ welfare. As I give my gorgeous little rescue girl a cuddle every day, the same thought always pops into my head. She had apparently been through quite a few homes before coming to us and I for the life of me can’t understand how someone could not want her or get rid of her. The fact that Naomi considers animals more disposable than paper plates is absolutely disgusting. Michelle, I again commend you for trying to make sure she never gets her hands on another dog. I can take or leave all the other shit – its interesting reading but irrelevant.
7. Muttlady and JM, I don’t think you have anything to apologize for. You were doing what you felt was right at the time. You had no way of knowing that Naomi was a liar and not the full quid. I defended her at times as well, not so much out of any idea that Naomi was this fantastic person who I considered totally in the right – I think I just tend to get a bee in my bonnet at times about standing up for the under dog. I always thought she was a full-on drama queen but I guess I felt a little sorry for her as I always thought Justin sounded like such a jerk. Now that we know it’s highly unlikely that any of the stories were true I really don’t care about anything that has supposedly gone on in her life. Also there is reference to two other men in some of the previous posts – who knows if that is even true. This could also be a way out story just to make her life seem more interesting and exciting. Michelle has done a fantastic thing by getting her on DNA lists and that’s the most important thing.
8. Do you think that some of these far fetched ideals about responsible dog ownership such as; not being away from the home for more than a few hours, or not letting a dog be outside in your own back yard unsupervised have come about with the increased popularity of Internet forums? I can't honestly believe that people have always thought this way as the examples we have been discussing are totally unrealistic ideas. It's got me wondering if the increased amount of time that people tend to spend on forums discussing how they care for their dogs has led to this raised standard on what is considered responsible dog ownership. It's like some kind of warped concept of keeping up with the Jones', everyone is trying so hard to prove how responsible they are and how much better they care for their dog then the next person.
9.
I've encountered one rescue (the national Chi one) who was REALLY rude to me when I tried volunteering. I mean REALLY rude. First they turned me down for "not living in a stable situation" which was understandable, I worked in fast food, I was renting and living with my boyfriend.
:o :o I don't know if I'm missing the point but I don't understand how your living circumstances as described above have absolutley anything do with you being able to volunteer with their organisation. They sound like a bunch of total fools to me. :-?
10. Ravyn, I 'm the one that said I don't like the idea of crates for extened periods of time. We are gone 12 hours and IMO it's too long. However if someone's circumstances mean that crating for that long is the only option then you do what you have to do - nothing wrong with that.
11. I think that type of attitude is totally ridiculous. If dogs should only live in homes where someone is home all the time then there would not be many people able to have dogs. Both the OH and I work full-time and we are gone for about 12 hours a day. We travel an hour each way to work so going home for lunch is totally out of the question. We absolutely adore our dogs and they get plenty of love and attention. I don’t believe that them being at home on their own for that long is detrimental to their well being at all. However one thing I do not agree with is dogs being left in a crate for that long. As I’ve stated in other topics we have a dog door so the dogs come in and out as they please and play in the back yard etc. I have noting against crates but I think more than a few hours in one is too much. I think rescue organisations who have the strict rules of not adopting to people who work full-time are seriously limiting the amount of dogs they are going to be able to adopt out for no valid reason.
12. Kira doesn’t react to sounds on the TV at all. The only sound Indy will react to is a squeeky toy sound. If he hears that he will run up to the TV and look all around for the toy. Then when he can’t find it he will go and stare into one of the speakers.
13. Wow, this thread is making my head hurt and it's becoming more and more ridiculous. Mei-Mei, thanks for saving me the trouble and posting everything that I want to say.
So Seijun, would you argue for me to be able to keep an elephant? How 'bout a giraffe? Or a hippo? Or a gator? If I was able to sufficiently care for these animals would it be okay for me to keep them? Or is it only the 'cool' animals like big cats and wolves that deserve the questionable interference of human beings?
What about a dolphin, it is ok for me to keep one of these in my pool?
14. DO's thread about how gently our dogs take food from our hands, got me thinking about how fussy everyone's dogs are when it comes to what food they will take. Kira will take absolutely anything I offer her. She takes first and asks questions later. If she doesn't like it she will spit it out and not eat it but she will always take whatever I give her without even thinking about it. Indy on the other hand is much fussier. He will sniff the offered food to decide if it's something the wants and then he will take it. If it's something he doesn’t want he will sniff it, then clamp his mouth shut and turn his head away.
15. Welcome to dogo. I think DrJeff has also given great advise. By the sounds of your post this is going to be your first baby? If it is I think a new puppy might be too much all at once. I'm not saying it can't be done, it's just that a new baby is a lot of work (and first children tend to be a bit more overwhelming for parents than the second or third) and a new puppy is also a lot of work, especially for for first time dog owners. I think if you did decide to go with a puppy at the same time as the baby then both you and your wife would need to be committed to looking after and training the puppy. If you're not really a dog person like you said, then I have a feeling that most of the work in relation to the puppy would fall to your wife. If that's the case I think a new baby and a new puppy might be taking on more than she can handle.
16. :o Um-ah! It's a good thing he looks so cute curled up in it.
17. I was actually watching a show on animal planet the other day about a sanctuary in Thailand that rescues wild animals such as Sun Bears, Gibbon’s and other various types of Monkey’s that people have decided should be pets. The show was heartbreaking and the thought of wild animals such as these being kept as pets is very disturbing. I don’t care what country you live in and how much money you have, Lions, Tigers, Bears, and Wolves etc are NOT pets. I bet if Mutts4Me were around she could give us a million examples of why wild animals (of course the big cats in particular) should not be kept as pets. I can’t help it, but to me all these types of animals are not comparable to domestic cats and dogs - it’s like comparing apples to oranges. I don’t think there is ever going to be facts that support either side of this argument. It’s always just going to be a matter of opinion.
18. I don’t think there should be regulations about owning a wolf. I think it should not be allowed full stop. Wild animals are wild and should stay that way. This is my opinion on all wild animals not just wolves.
19. It goes so quickly doesn’t it. How is he recovering from his hip surgery? From what you post about him, I’ve assumed that everything has gone pretty well.
20. Nooooooooooo - I can't do a race. Kiwi and I raced to 2000 and we amost drove ourselves and everyone else nuts with our inane dribble in order to increase our post count.
21. Yeah it's 5000. I've got a bit under a thousand to go.....
