When I had my malamute, I was told by the police that I had to have a sign both on my door and my fence that warned people that there was a "dangerous" dog on premises. So I made one. A picture of Jarvis, a head shot, in full teeth display mode, (which he did whenever he didnt know who was at the door) It was actually quite nasty looking. He really did look like a dangerous dog when his lips curled back and all his teeth were exposed...(he was 110 lbs after all, with a BIG head) and on the bottom of it, i had posted 'MAKE MY DAY!!" For those unfamilar, it was a line from a Clint Eastwood movie, Dirty Harry, where he has a 45 caliber handgun almost as long as a rifle, and is pointing it at a criminal who just attempted to kill a bunch of people, ( a 45 magnum) and is pretty much asking the guy "do something to make me shoot you....." he was a cop in the movie who didnt believe in "politically correct" and thought criminals should be treated like, well, criminals.... Anyway. I put the signs up, and the cops came back and said "that's not EXACTLY" what we meant, a 'BEWARE OF DOG" sign would have done....

LOL - I think dogs understand MORE than WE think they do....
courtnek replied to courtnek's topic in Everything about dogs
I see this as proof every day that they are responding to pack instinct. They KNOW they're not supposed to be there, but they're going to check it out anyway. I've seen video's of wolf cubs going through discarded bones from the kill, and looking sneaking and frightened, but doing it anyway. Eventually mom catches them, and stands over them and growls, and they back away and roll over....OH NO BUSTED!! I really think it's part of their training in the pecking order. They will try, no matter what...someone just has to put them "in their place..."   -
OK, being me, I'm going to elaborate. I know you want only three response, but these categories cover different types of dogs, so here goes: For a companion/Pet: 1. Sociability with other dogs/humans 2. Acceptance to disruption of dogs own social status 3. Playfullness For Guard dog (police or military, NOT the everyday Joe) 1. Acceptance to disruption of dogs own social status 2. Willingness to play/work for human 3. Aggressiveness with food/human For Hunting Dogs 1. Stamina when faced with a problem solving task 2. Hunting/Prey drive 3. Reaction to startling stimuli A lot of these traits bleed into each other, but you only wanted three. I firmly believe that ALL dogs should accept, and in fact be trained, for 'Acceptance to disruption of dogs own social status". I believe in training by pack rules, since those are the only rules the dog really understands. Hope this helps, and not confuses.... :D

All of the above advice is EXCELLENT. Puppies, especially labs, MOUTH. He needs things that are really difficult to chew up. I always used rawhide in the puppy stages but you have to monitor that so they dont swallow big chunks. He is teething, and he is using you as his teething ring, which you should NOT allow, ever. Ice works very well for a teething dog. It cools their gums. and it's hard so it's hard to chew up and it makes them feel better. Shara, we have discussed this before. The only other thing I would suggest is putting bitter apple on your hands before greeting Coal, let him taste it once, and see how he reacts. Most (although NOT ALL) dogs hate it. For Coal, I would find some powdered soup that doesnt have a lot of preservatives in it, and make beef and chicken ice cubes. Boil it according to the directions, then pour it in an ice cube tray and let it freeze. When he gets mouthy, tell him NO loud and clear, adn MAKE HIM LIE DOWN. Reward him with one of the ice cubes. This will both help his gums stop hurting, and teach him that non-biting is rewarded.

My golden used to do that in my old home where I had a slot in the door. I think they are just blowing off steam at the fact that a stranger came that close to their territory, and they couldnt drive him off so they attack what he leaves.... Put a small platic box outside the door with a brick or a heavy weight in the bottom (so it wont blow away) and ask the mailman to drop the mail in there. I ended up using a small plastic garbage can with one of the foot levers that opens the lid. Made it easy on the mailman, he just stepped on the lever and dropped the mail in. I also had a plastic garbage bag in there, and when I got home I would just pull the bag out with the mail in and bring it in, then put the bag back later. As far as training, I think the crate is a good idea. And a leash attached to your belt when your home, to keep her under supervision till she tones down some.

Proud, If you are doing all of that, if you are verifying that the breed line is pure, that there are no medical issues (like hip displacia, ear and growth problems) if you are breeding pet standard only and not selling them as Show Quality....then you are NOT a BYB. BYB's are people who throw two dogs together, regardless of lines, medical history or temperament, adn produce "purebred puppies" which the ignorant will buy because they are cheaper than well-bred puppies. I think you misunderstand what we mean by BYB...If you are following all of the above guidelines, then you are not one. Many breeders end up with pet quality only pups. Providing they are bred with health issues in mind, so as not to propagate those health issues, they are not BYB dogs...

Pitgal, this is a travesty. More so than anyone else, the mentally ill benefit from the love and companionship of a dog. The dog is usually the only thing they trust, since it doesnt judge them for the mistakes they have made.... it loves them anyway.... this is SOOO WRONG!!!    Keep up the fight!! I am sure everyone here will back you up

OK, not to be gross, but people shampoos have formeldahyde in them.. the same stuff they use to embalm people..... I would suggest a good quality dog shampoo. If your dog will tolerate it, after she is wahsed, blow dry her. The blow drying will make her fur seem "bigger", just like it does on people. You can also, if she will tolerate it, "tease" her fur in position. If you're not familair with teasing, it is back brushing of the fur with short, sharp strokes. it causes the hair to clump up in pockets, and then you can manipulate it with your hands, to make it look the way you want. Some dogs do OK with baby shampoo, but others dont do well at all. It depends on the dog. Teasing has no chemicals involved, and it will hold for quite a while once "patted" into place. You should do it just prior to show time. Good luck!!! :D

where is this site? I would LOVE to go look at it.... Actually, I saw an interview once with a Chief of Police who said that the best protection against burglers is a dog. Doesnt matter what size or how ferocious. What they are mostly concerned with is the amount of noise the dog is going to make - to alert neighbors or wake up people sleeping. And little dogs tend to make alot more noise than some big dogs anyway. So the sign is justified!!

You did the right thing. I know it's hard, I didnt want to give up the yellow lab I found, and her owner is IRREsponsible. But the elderly need their dogs, and my find had kids who missed her terribly.... I think dog-sitting and visiting is a good thing. The people would probably love to have a young person around to talk to as well. I am sorry you had to let her go. My heart goes out to you.

I came down to the office, and found Freebee under the desk, sniffing thru the garbage.... Altho never trained for "what are you doing under there?" she responded immediaely and left the underside of the desk... being a mom, I lectured..... "you're NOT allowed under there, y'know..." She got his look of "uh, oh, I'm BUSTED!!" and walked away and layed down.... I'm STILL cracking up....

Dogs dont usually stress as much as cats do, but be aware that they are very sensitive to YOUR feelings. If yu are feeling stressed, the dog will too. Walks in the neighborhood, getting to know the area, all of that is your best bet. But be aware that worrying about it will only make the dog feel stressed. He can sense your feelings, and if he thinks you're not ok with the move, he wont be either. :)

once again - buy the dog - dont train it or have it trained - let it become Alpha in your household and then tie it up outside where anyone can reach it. Complicate the situation by adding food, and a small child.... WHEN WILL THESE PEOPLE EVER LEARN?????? NO child should EVER be allowed to play with ANY dog without adult, Alpha supervision. They think the dog doesnt understand OUR body language? How many small children do they think understand a DOG's body language? Most ADULTS dont understand it...... At least the law appears to be reasonable about this...and the dog responsible for two maulings needs some REAL demotion and major training/socialization......
I still don’t play it with Indy as he is very dominant – you know the saying “if you give an inch, they take a mile” well that’s him down to a T
that describes my old malamute mix to a tee as well... He was mixed with a border collie - and too big for his britches.... -

thank you rosebud, that's what I was trying to get across, unsucsesfully... In a submissive dog situtation, you have to make them feel safer, less Omega... BUT since this is a Dobie, you cant make them TOO successful, or you end up with a dominant dog problem... gotta go even straights, all the way.. -
me too, Carol...I cried when I posted it... there is a valuable lesson to be learnd from Puff aand Jackie..

OK, in my opinion, the BEST kids song EVER!! PUFF, the magic dragon lived by the sea And frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called Honah Lee, Little Jackie Paper loved that rascal PUFF,and brought him strings and sealing wax, and other fancy stuff... Together they would travel on a boat with billowed sail Jackie kept a lookout perched on PUFF's gigantic tail, Noble kings and princes would bow when'er they came, Pirate ships would lower their flags when PUFF roared out his name OH, PUFF, the magic dragon lived by the sea And frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called Honah Lee, PUFF, the magic dragon lived by the sea And frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called Honah Lee A dragon lives forever but not so little boys Painted wings and giant rings make way for other toys. One gray night it happened, Jackie Paper came no more And PUFF that mighty dragon, he ceased his fearless roar His head was bent in sorrow, green scales fell like rain, Without his life-long friend, PUFF could not be brave, So PUFF that mighty dragon sadly slipped into his cave Oh! PUFF, the magic dragon lived by the sea And frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called Honah Lee, PUFF, the magic dragon lived by the sea And frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called Honah Lee
