i will not even go off on the other tangent about how many cruel animal tests are outdated and no longer required even for medical testing.
and I agree with that WHOLEHEARTEDLY!!! Animal testing done for STUPID trials should not be allowed. Repetitive tests, for which the results are already known (like hairspray in rabbits eyes) should be BANNED completely. But I am concerned about this, because there is REAL testing, against REAL diseases, which needs to continue. The bastards that just want to continue their grants have given the testing a bad name....and PETA has contributed to that. I believe that all testing should be evaluated, for it;s potential use as a REAL cure, or is it just grant money.....I AM AGAINST GRANT MONEY IN IT'S CURRENT FORM!!! Do I sound pissed off enough about this? The bastards abusing the system are ruining it for the people who REALLY CARE!! and really want to find the cures for diseases!!! -
I gave her a steak last night - K's suggestion made me think she definitely deserved it. She LOVED it! I'm afraid she will want steak on a regular basis now!!!

I just talked to Jeff, the cop. I dont have to testify at all. He doesnt need to say how he got the information they were dealing. Since he lives just behind me, he could have just been driving by, which he does all the time anyway, just to keep tabs on the neighborhood. So unless they ask him directly how he got this information, he wont have to say anything. And these people know they are being watched anyway. The police stake out their house regularly. Since he wasnt in uniform, and was off-duty, there is no "complaint" that he responded to. He also said it was coinicdental that I called, as he was just out the door to do his neighborhood "rounds" anyway. AAnd their house is always one of the first spots he checks. Just before I called he had checked in with the captain and said he was going to do a drive by. So Freebee and I are OUT of it, which makes me feel much less nervous.
He's cute but so NOT a pet!
ABSOLUTELY "so NOT a pet!!!" did the owners have any idea how LARGE and DANGEROUS an adult tiger can get???? Yeesshhhh..... They require people trained in raising, feeding. housing and a LOT of room to run in.... There is a guy here who owns and raised two siberian tigers. They are SOOO white!!! But he lives on a 20 acre farm, can afford to feed them raw meat and let them run, ahd he walks them on LEASHES around the area!!! But he's been doing this for 20 years, I think his farm is considered a form of sanctuary......The leashes are horse training leads, solid leather and about 3 inches thick....and he said one of the tigers actually broke one!! I cant see the average "Joe" keeping tigers...that's scary.....

that was me :o I wasnt logged in -
Not yet. These people apparently have connections that have kept them out of jail in the past. I wont risk Freebee being poisened in the meatime. I asked the cop to keep her out of it, until they could definitely win the trial, and then I would testify. I'm NOT taking any chances with Freebers safety.... or mine, for that matter....these people are NASTY... :o :o

There are a bunch of people across the street who routinely deal drugs, and the police have been watching them for some time, but couldnt catch them in the act. I let Freebers out, and she was out for a while, and then started barking up a storm. Growling, nasty barking, not usually like her. I looked out and saw a "deal" going on. I called the guy behind me, who's a cop, and he came over and caught them in the middle of the deal. THEY WERE ARRESTED!!! Hopefully, the police will put them away and keep them off my street!! THANKS, FREEBEE!! He said if she hadnt alerted, it would have been missed.
Most hounds have a tendancy to follow their noses so you may have big recall problems !!
Yea, that I know. Labs are the same way. It's hunting dog/bird dog/hounddog thing. They smell something, they want it NOW.... Freebee is recall trained (repeatedly!!!) but if something gets her interest, she's off like a shot.... That's what fenced yards and leashes are for!! LOL I honestly think that hunting dogs would all come back, except I dont live somewhere where letting them loose is viable - I wish I could!! gotta start buying those Lotto tickets again...

they just called me!!! I get to go meet her tomorrow!!! WOO HOO!! IF the picture comes through (I am picture-posting illiterate, Mouse will tell you ALL about that - lol) this is what she looks like :D :D :D :D

No, that one was adopted by someone else. This is from the same shelter tho, they have alot of them up for adoption. They are part of a foxhound rescue society, and these are all field trained dogs. They actually hunted. The one I am interested in is called Laurel, she is 7 years old (they rescue them when their field career is over) and she is listed as being very mellow and good with dogs, cats and people. I am concerned tho, because reading up on them they say dont trust them with non-canine pets. Not that I think PushyCat has anything to worry about, he'll whip her into shape in no time. He hasnt met a dog yet that wouldnt move out of his way when he enters the room.... She i slisted as being very good with all animals, and they have cats at the foster home....I was just looking for some personal info, if anyone has any, about them. I have never owned a hound....I think that category and Toys are about the only two common category of dog I HAVENT owned in 30 years...

I'm considering getting a foxhoud for me and Freebee - they are supposed to be good with dogs and cats, intelligent, trainable, and the one I want to adopt is a bit older and very mellow. However, I have never owned a hound. I read up on them, and they seem like very nice dogs, but do any of you have any personal info on them? Quirks? Oddities? things the shelter wont tell me? (lol) thanks Katy

I know he he felt!!! A long long time ago, there was a kid's show on called "Captain Kangaroo". One of the props on the show was this HUGE (like 4 ft tall) reddish orange stuffed dog. I forget the dogs name, but I wanted one so bad!!! My dad got him for me for Christmas. On TV he didnt look that big, but when I saw him under the tree I started to cry cuz I was afraid of him. He was taller and wider than I was. It took a lot of coaxing from my mom to get me to go near him. Eventually he slept with me every night, but I still remember the first time I saw him up close. p.s. - I guess I;m used to large dogs in bed, huh> :)
What Courtneck suggested may not work for all dogs. For example Tessa, if something hurts her she will just go psycho, run around, jump up and nip in submission.
That's absolutely correct. However, I did not intend for anyone to think I am advocating hurting the dog. Just enough pressure to make them take notice is usually all you need. You dont want to put so much pressure on it hurts, or they yelp. I may have stated it wrong originally. Think of it more like a pinch - just enough to feel a lttle discomfort, but not to really hurt. sorry about that. I should probably choose my wording more carefully. and yes, some dogs do nip out of submission, but that needs to be stopped as well. Submissive pack animals do often nip, but they have fur and undercoats to deflect it. We dont, so while Coal may not be trying to bite really, it's still painful and should be stopped. This may seem harsh to some, but none of my dogs have ever been allowed to set teeth to me, even in play. SHe knows that if her teeth come in contact with my skin, she needs to back off. and just the NO TEETH command, after she was trained, is enough. Possibly your settle command will work better, It's a very good idea. :)

Oh my.....I guess it was cold....geez..... :o A story to go along with that. The term "bug" for a computer defect originated back in the 60's, when simple calculating computers (punch cards) were 6 ft tall and 3 or 4 feet wide. They gave off so much heat they had huge circulating fans in the back. On one of these machines one day the punch cards were all coming out wrong, what they keyed in was not displaying on the reports. They took the back off of the computer and found a moth had landed on one of the transistors, frying both itself and the transistor - therefore, the term "bug".

it's ok Shara - it takes some time. You made the mistake of letting him up as soon as he looked "sorry" - dont, next time. make him stay in the apology position, lying down, and dont let him get up. Dont let him "weasle" up to you. You have to be FIRM!! Make him understand. by being ordered to LAY DOWN, and stay there, that you wont take any crap. It may take a lot of tries, but he WILL eventually get it. And once he does, he wont bite you anymore. He has an alpha complex. and you have to defeat it. you GO girl!!!

OK Guest - that was uncalled for. We have a LOT of teenagers on this board who are very mature, responsible, and good dog handlers. Age is not an indication of maturity. My ex is 47 years old and never grew up.... Please be aware that age does not determine maturity - in ANY of us...
Hey, I never claimed I was not people aggressive! hehehehehehe - NEITHER DID I...just TRY to muzzle me....LOL
uh oh... K is probably going to send me to my bed and muzzle me......
-
actually, it's not. Your fingers cant put nearly the pressure a dogs can into the correction - and it's what their instincts will tell them this act is wrong... You dont want to hurt him, just make him realize that you are DISPLEASED and you are using wolf correction to make him behave. Trust me, it works quite nicely. You wont hurt him.
So I tried to get him to stop and he gave me this look like "FINE!" and bit me!!! So of course, he had to go back outside because he was just making it worse... TODAY he will come inside and learn something... TODAY...
Shara dear friend, I DONT want to rain on your parade but the above trait HAS TO STOP! NOW! A dog should NEVER be allowed to bite you, for any reason, I dont care how PO'd it is. If it becomes a battle and a muzzle, it cant be allowed. There is no safety with a dog that bites his people. Lab's nip, and mouth, and even that cant be tolerated. I cant stress enough how important this is If the dog feels alpha enough to bite you, you have a major problem.... Freebee used to nip, and mouth, and I broke her of it using a technique that wolves use. If an underling nips or bites at a higher ranking animal, that animal will take his ear in his mouth and bite down on it. Hard enought to hurt, but not hard enough to break skin. The dog will squirm, and try to get away in most cases. You can do this with your fingernails. At the same time, yell NO!!!! LOUDLY AND DETERMINED!! Grab the ear from behind the head, so he is not facing you, and PINCH until he squirms. Then when he stops, praise him and pet him.
