usmcbyrd Posted October 27, 2002 Posted October 27, 2002 our blue heeler is starting to turn red. we read a little about creeping red but none of the sites have very much info about the problem (or whatever you want to call it). if anyone has such knowledge please share it with us. thanks. Quote
cairnmom Posted October 27, 2002 Posted October 27, 2002 Is this a skin disease or what? Never heard of it before... I'll help you look but what info do you have on it? Jessica Quote
cairnmom Posted October 27, 2002 Posted October 27, 2002 Here are some sites: They called it "red mange" scientific name: CANINE DEMODICOSIS or Demodectic Mange. Caused by parasite: Demodex canis http://www.animalhealthcare.com/handouts/general/demodex.htm http://www.mesavet.com/library/mange.htm Good luck and hope you can get it treated....sounds like a nasty problem. usmcbyrd Posted October 27, 2002 Author Posted October 27, 2002 thank you very much for helping cairnmom, but its not that kind of creeping red. blue heelers can get this gene that causes them to turn somewhat red like a red heeler. the coloring just gets kind of messed up. i dont think its anything that will hurt him, we think its just a coloring thing. but what im trying to figure out is does this gene come with any other side effects, like will he be fully healthy. It's rare and is genetic. There are no ill effects, it simply deals with color. I'll look for another post that was posted earlier concerning this. A Heeler named Foster --- started life as a blue color and is now a beautiful red. I have a blue female Heeler that was borned with a full black mask, the older she gets the redder the mask. Now, at 3 yrs old, she has a red mask and is a blue color. She inherited this from her grand-father. Quote
usmcbyrd Posted October 28, 2002 Author Posted October 28, 2002 thanks a lot hobbit. you are the man. now if you can only come up with a way to stop my male from trying to have some fun with his sister. but they are hillbilly dogs so i expect that. LOL Quote

imported_Foster Posted November 1, 2002 Posted November 1, 2002 Hobbitt mentioned my dog Foster and her creeping red. Yes, she looks like she is half red and half blue...she is a freak of nature. You can see a picture of her by going to www.flyball-fbi.com and checking out her profile. There is also a picture in there where you can see her sides. She is colored very similar to a german shepherd but is 100% acd and her whole family was blue and not red. Of course, I think she is gorgeous. Quote
cairnmom Posted November 1, 2002 Posted November 1, 2002 Fly ball looks like a great activity for dogs! They all seem so happy and eager :) Glad it is a just a genetic thing and not something really wrong with your dog. I found out some interesting things searching... Quote
imported_Foster Posted November 1, 2002 Posted November 1, 2002 Yes my dogs love flyball and it is a lot of fun. Personally, I think the creeping red makes Foster look unique which I like. She does not look like every other acd out there, even though they all look pretty different...When I decide to get another acd, I will go back to the same breeder and I will hope I will get another with creeping red. Hobbit Posted November 2, 2002 Posted November 2, 2002 Hey Foster --- thanks for posting the website. I looked and looked for it but was unable to locate it! Has Foster gotten redder (lost her saddle, yet)? Drop in now and again and let me know how she's doing! She IS lovely. Quote
imported_Foster Posted November 2, 2002 Posted November 2, 2002 Hobbitt, It is still creeping but it has slowed down a lot finally. Guess it may stop soon...nothing like having a 4 year old dog that is changing colors :) I am starting a new flyball team so when that website is up and running I will make sure to pass on the new website. I plan to put up some new pictures. Quote
Hobbit Posted November 2, 2002 Posted November 2, 2002 Thanks Foster. I look forward to see the new site and the pictures. Quote
