:o Theme park loses puppy By Associated Press Published August 4, 2004 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ORLANDO - Universal Orlando theme park is in the doghouse after losing a puppy a guest left at its kennel. Joe Wheat thought Conner, a 4-month-old white Labrador retriever, was in good hands during his visit Saturday. The dog was - until the kennel gave it to someone else. "We take care of more than 5,000 animals a year, and this is the first time we've ever faced a situation like this," Universal spokesman Tom Schroder said Tuesday. The situation is urgent for Wheat, an optometrist. He is getting ready to move from Jacksonville to Houston. "Now I'm thinking I'm going to stay in the area for a few weeks to see how this resolves itself," Wheat said. "I'm hoping I won't leave alone." Wheat said when he dropped off Conner, with his favorite chew toy, at the 117-cage kennel Saturday afternoon, he filled out a form that asked for information on himself and his dog. He should have received a pink duplicate that serves as a claim ticket, but didn't. When Wheat returned about six hours later, Conner was gone. The dog had been checked out by someone with the ticket. Theme park investigators are talking to kennel employees and tracking down records to try to find the puppy.

A friend of mine is considering adopting a deaf Boxer, and she wants to do some research on living with/training a deaf dog before she makes her decision. She already has a hearing Boxer in the home and the two dogs have been introduced and they get along wonderfully. I was wondering if either of you have any resources/websites I could forward along to her, where she can get some helpful info. I figured if anyone could help me out it would be you two  Thanks in advance! :D

NOT to defend this dog's actions, because this is horribly tragic....but WHY would someone leave their 6 month old unattended near a dog's FOOD BOWL??? :x By MIKE GLENN Copyright 2004 Houston Chronicle A 6-month-old Spring boy died Thursday night after being bitten by a family dog, the first of two area children hospitalized for serious dog bites. The Spring infant was bitten shortly before 5 p.m. at his home in {edited out for privacy}. Montgomery County sheriff's deputies said the boy, whose name was not released, was crawling on the floor near the dog's food bowl when the incident occurred. The child was flown to Memorial Hermann Hospital for medical treatment but later died of his injuries, Montgomery County sheriff's deputies said. Neighbors told investigators that the dog, a mixed-breed boxer, was the family's pet and had never shown any aggressive tendencies in the past. The dog will be quarantined by the Montgomery County animal control office pending the outcome of an investigation, officials said. Charges are not likely to be filed in the case because the incident appears to be isolated, and there were no suspicious circumstances, Montgomery County sheriff's deputies said. A Brazoria County boy also was flown to Memorial Hermann Hospital Thursday after he was bitten by his family's dog. The dog bit the 5-year-old boy several times, including on the head and face, shortly before 7 p.m. at the home near the intersection of County Road 671 and County Road 30. The child was taken by Life Flight helicopter to Memorial Hermann Hospital in unknown condition. The investigation was continuing .

:o Well, judging from your dog's strange behaviour, and your son's neglect...I would : a. never leave my child or animals with her again, even for a SECOND :-? b. certainly NOT recommend her to care for a foster child ! Even if her neglectful treatment of your son was out of sheer ignorance, it goes to show how truly incompetent she is to care for children...it pains me to hear she has a young stepson! I would however, refer her to some parenting classes...at least until she learns that a 7 yr old should not be left responsible to take his own medication.......
Responsible pit bull owners DO NOT take their dogs to dog parks.
Agreed! and I think that goes for the owner of ANY dog aggressive dog. Why would you put your dog, yourself, or everyone else and their dogs at risk ??? Its just not responsible, especially if your dog has attacked other dogs at the park before. My female Boxer has dominance issues and is very same sex aggressive, therefore I do not take her to the offleash park. For one, the dog park is supposed to be an enjoyable experience with your dog. How enjoyable can it be ,spending your time stressed about whether your dog is going to start a fight??? sugart20_99, please do yourself and your dog a favor....keep him on a leash or in your yard.Or if you MUST use the dog parks, go when there are no other dogs there. JMO :-?

CK made a good point.
Courtnek, I believe Ironman was upset about the thread K posted regarding the "killboxes"...which she CLEARLY marked as disturbing... I believe it is mandatory here in the states K to impound an animal that has bitten or has been suspected of biting someone for a 10 day quarantine period, even if the dog has been vaccinated. here is a snippet of the Florida law:
(a) The department of animal services and its animal control code enforcement officers, law enforcement officers and humane officers of state chartered nonprofit humane organizations shall have authority to pick up, catch or procure and impound any animal found to be in violation of this article, any animal infected or believed to be infected with rabies or other contagious or infectious disease to humans or animals, or any animal suspected of biting a human, in such manner as is reasonably necessary to effectuate its capture. Impounded animals shall be confined in a humane manner at an animal shelter. Animals impounded at an animal shelter shall be made available for public inspection in order to allow the owner to reclaim their animal. An animal impounded for the purpose of rabies observation shall not be moved or released from the place of quarantine unless permission is first obtained from the director of animal services. The director may approve an exception as to the above-required place of confinement for dogs, ferrets, or cats having a current rabies vaccination administered by a licensed veterinarian. (b) Unless otherwise provided by this article, an impounded animal shall be held for at least five days, including the day of impoundment, except that those dogs or cats impounded for the observation of rabies, or those dogs, ferrets, or cats impounded which are licensed or which the owner thereof can otherwise be identified, shall be held at least ten days. The depositing of a letter of notification by first class U.S. mail shall constitute adequate notification of impoundment. The owner shall also be notified by telephone, if possible. This section shall not apply to animals surrendered by the owner or an agent of the owner, in which case disposition may be made as provided in this article without notification or a holding period. At the expiration of the holding period, during which time a diligent attempt has been made to locate and contact the owner, the animal may be disposed of in the manner provided in this article. (c) A registry shall be maintained by the impounding agency. The registry shall contain identifying characteristics of each animal impounded along with the location, date, reason for each pickup, and final disposition, to include name and address of the reclaimant or adopted. A copy of the registry shall be provided to department of animal services monthly, and be made available for inspection by the department at the impounding agency, at any time, upon the department's request. The records shall be maintained by the impounding agency for two years. (d)If an animal bites and causes injury to any human, the animal shall be immediately impounded for rabies observation and quarantine, if necessary, for the proper length of time or held for ten days. Thereafter, the animal shall either be returned to the owner or destroyed in an expeditious and humane manner in accordance with the provisions of this article and F.S. ch. 767, when applicable. (e) Any owner or person having custody of an animal suspected of biting a human, who fails to surrender the animal to the department of animal services for impoundment or inspection when requested by an animal control code enforcement officer shall be in violation of this article. (f) For violations of this article, an owner may be subject to a written warning or such penalties as prescribed in this article, in addition to or in lieu of impoundment of the animal.
-
:o nice to meet you too. Sasha is completely correct...the only "violent" pics and vids I see on here are labelled as such. If it disturbs you, don't look at them. They aren't posted to disgust you....they are posted to educate. It is entirely up to you whether or not to click on them :-?

I'm so so sorry about your situation...I can't even imagine how you all must be feeling, and my deepest sympathies go out to you and your family. :( The bottom line is that X's safety is priority ....I'm assuming that it was Patti that bit him this last time, since she is being quarantined?? I know this must be so difficult for you, but it seems like this is what is best for everyone involved.....you did everything you could for Patti, and maybe even kept her a little longer than you should have because it was hard to "give up" on her. Don't beat yourself up over it...it is very hard to accept that a furkid that we love is potentially dangerous. You did the best you could for Patti, given the circumstances. Your family has some healing to do...I wish you all the best. -
Great news, HF! :D .......now tell him to call MY vet and nag him to do the same

Its absolutely heartbreaking that so many dogs are just banished out in the backyard like discarded furniture when they are no longer cute little puppies. People are so unrealistic about what it takes to own a pet! Both my dogs were tossed out by their previous owners once they became "too much hassle" (at around 1 yr of age :x ). At least I can be thankful that mine were rescued from that existence...so many aren't  K.....my son is exactly the same way...he loves on the dogs almost TOO much  they lap it up though. I too dread the day we lose Loki... he is my son's best friend in the world.
BTW Smooshie: Why would you go leaving good ol humid, smoggy London or slushy cold London for "The Beach?"
LOL...believe it or not, I miss London....especially this time of year when its unbearably hot here in Florida. The Humidity up there is NOTHING compared to here :-? , besides, I could really use a Tim Horton's coffee and a stroll down Richmond Row right now  Of course there ARE benefits to being down here in the Sunshine State too.......The gulf of Mexico is a MUCH better beach than Grand Bend :evilbat: TDG...those Science Diet stats are horrendous! 60% more expensive than Canidae over the course of a year??? I hate that my vet pushes that crap :x
