DogPaddle
So my mum works with an animal rescue group but they do not take pits for rehoming due to liability. However, they are reviewing the policy and may start to take Staffordshire Bull Terriers if they can be convinced that they are not "pit" bulls. I know we might like to see them rehome any animal regardless of breed but right now that won't happen. So what are the historic/academic/breeding/lines differences between the two? Anyone have any good site references. Meeting on this issue is at 9:00 this evening but this issue should not come up till 10:00ish. I just found out, sorry. Sarahstaff
Well, I doubt you'll have any SBTs come into shelters there, but.... The SBT and APBT are related breeds, but different. They were developed from the same root stock, but diverged sometime in the 19th century, after the ancestors of the APBT were imported to the US. Dogs in England continued to develop separately from the dogs in the US. This is a history of the SBT, from the breed clubs of the UK: Brief history of the breed This is similar info, but from a UK dog breed info site: Staffordshire Bull Terrier This is a history of the APBT, with mention of the SBT: APBT history And this is an anti-BSL article from a dog trainer, with mention of the SBT & APBT as separate breeds: Westwinds dog training
DogPaddle
Thanks, great links. I have more time now, they've put off the pit issue till next meeting, it may get its own meeting. So any info on any pit related breed, paticularly anything that would encourage them to take them for rehoming would be helpful. I've got the beginnings of a sortof presentation for them. Doesn't someone on here do a pit rescue in SW Ontario?
Taurus and Jada
I know there is barlees angels. I think its in Hamilton. www.Barlees.org There is also the lady who K posted about in the "scared for my dogs life" post. Her email address is there, and she rescues pits when she can. A women in my community also rescues pit bulls.( well all breeds, but she doesn't turn away pits.). I beleive she works at the Humane Society as well. DogPaddle
Thanks for the links. They have gone back to deciding not to take any pit or pit like dog. I'm sure the recent events in London have affected their decision. However, they will refer to other groups and I am now an official volunteer so I have gathered some info on pit and pit related dogs and will see if I can work on them slowly. True_Pits
That may be kind of hard, because both breeds are Pit Bulls. Maybe there is a "loop hole".
