Guest Anonymous Posted February 25, 2003 Posted February 25, 2003 Hello, I friend of a friend gave me a Pomeranian that he said he found. He told me it was a puppy. And that he found her with stitches lke she was just spayed. I took her to the vet and she said that the pom is at least 3 to 5 years old because of the tarter build up in her teeth. I personally think the pom is in her senior years (9 to 11 years): she sleeps a lot, very inactive, doesn't ever chew anything, drinks a lot, pees a lot. I am beginning to think the stitches are from a c-section because she is only 5 lbs. Is there any way I can find out her real age? She would be an excellent dog to breed if she is not too old. Excellent temperment and presentation. Please reply with any helpful info. thanks! Janie Quote
courtnek Posted February 25, 2003 Posted February 25, 2003 The teeth are the best judge of age....she may be lethargic for other reasons... Her diet may not be right, her blood sugar may be wrong. If you can do it, have a bloodwork done up on her. Have the vet check her for diabetes. This often causes lethargy, if the blood sugar is too high. If she is proven to be diabetic, you cant breed her.... I'm sorry... :( Quote
bk_blue Posted February 25, 2003 Posted February 25, 2003 [quote name='Mei-Mei']Another good reason not to breed her is that you have no idea of her history before she was with you. The world is full of unwanted dogs, and I'm sure you don't want to add to the pet overpopulation problem. If she's a really good dog maybe you should just enjoy the time you have together and don't undertake the arduous task of breeding. :) well said MM :D Janie- check out this topic before you do anything with your dog: http://forum.dogomania.com/viewtopic.php?t=4351 and this one: http://forum.dogomania.com/viewtopic.php?t=2749&start=45 and let us know what you think after reading them. Quote
Guest Anonymous Posted February 25, 2003 Posted February 25, 2003 The stitches are more than likely from being spayed. She could have been adopted from a shelter and then dumped. I would contact local shelters and ask if they have adopted out a Pom of her description. They may have history on the poor little thing. If she has diabetes she will need immediate Vet care. Did you tell your Vet about the drinking and peeing? Pomeranians are active little dogs as a general rule. This dog could have also been stolen and passed off. Run a free found ad in case someone's heart is breaking. PLEASE get her some help in the meantime. Thanks, Glad you took her in. WD Quote
courtnek Posted February 26, 2003 Posted February 26, 2003 Thank you WD - the drinking/peeing is one of the first signs of diabetes (I'm a diabetic, so is my son) and the lethargy is not good for a normally active dog. I have to ask you some hard questions: If she is proven to be a diabetic, could you bring yourself to give her injections every day? Would you be willing to test her blood sugar three to four times a day? Could you handle mood swings (yes, diabetic dogs have mood swings - they get cranky, just like people, when the blood sugar is too high) You need to get the vet to check her out and then decide what you want to, and are willing to do, to treat her if this is an issue. My best to you! It hasnt been easy dealing with my son, but dogs are more forgiving. Quote
courtnek Posted February 26, 2003 Posted February 26, 2003 p.s. If she is proven to be a diabetic, and you need any help let me know. I've been doing this for 38 years for me and 3 years for my son. He's less cooperaive than a dog would be...lol I'll help you in any way I can :D Quote
