Pits need high fiber and high fat content in their diet
Foods that are good: Cabbage, potato, carrots, white or brown rice,
venison, fish, beef and poultry.

Great for after getting fixed!!!

~ Liver Love ~ (Once or twice a week if a puppy)
1 serving
1 1/2 cups of Chicken Livers
2 Tablespoons Olive Oil
3/4 Cup Cooked White Rice
3/4 Cup Mashed cooked carrots (3 Medium Carrots)
1 TableSpoon Yogurt

Brown Chicken Livers in the olive oilk over low heat for 20
minutes. Do not over cook or else the livers will be dry. Combine
the livers, rice, carrots, and yogurt in bowl. Blend well and serve!

* Personally I would grate the carrots because when cook veggies you loose all vitamins in them.
* Rice prevents Diarrehea
*May substitute Livers for Chicken Hearts

Beware the raisins! In large amounts, they (as well as regular grapes) can be toxic!

Oh, and I'd also suggest using safflower oil instead of olive oil, or plain vegetable oil as it's actually more beneficial. Hey, Gizmo, I'm not taking shots at your plan. It sounds great. I'm just trying to help and canine nutrition has become of major interest to me in the past year or so. I'm certainly no expert, but am learning more every day. 8)

My replies always come in groups... :-?

I meant use safflower oil instead of EITHER vegetable, or olive oil. I reread it and it sounded confusing (to me, anyway, but that's not really all that unusual).

HorseFeathers you allways make me laugh! I wouldn't think you "dogging on my recipes that I found!" Don't worrie I like you and this forum!!! The grapes are toxic really! Yeah I'm just saying like 5 maybe in one bowl of food a day or so! Where could I get that Safflower oil?? whats it made out of?

I just hope everyone likes the recipes and adds on to them!! :P :D Sasha in about a month and half I 'm fixing Gizmo and I will try so I will come back and let everyone and yourself know if she likes them!! Have a GREAT day everyone!

Gizmo, re safflower oil... it's an edible drying oil that is low in saturated fatty acids, is obtained from the seeds of the safflower, and is often used in diets low in cholesterol. In other words, it has what you'd want from an oil in regard to skin care and yadda without so much of the bad stuff you think of when you think oils. It's usually available in most of the larger grocery stores.

Re raisins... I'm still learning about this, but apparently dogs have died from ingesting too many raisins/grapes. I guess the term "too many" grapes would depend a lot on individual dogs, so since I have a lot of tiny dogs around, I just don't give them any at all. See, the way my luck runs is.... once I've heard of some newfangled ailment du jour, it usually strikes one of my critters. Like within a week of the very first time I ever heard anything about urinary blockages in cats, one of my cats blocked. Soooooo... when I read of a substantiated danger, I tend to drive myself entirely nuts trying to avoid it.

I just realized how out of place I am. Everyone else is posting pictures of big ol' dogs. In the midst of all these big, strong breeds, I'm posting pictures of my Yorkie and Toy Poodle. LOL, I'm as out of place as can be!

I've got some other more serious looking dogs that I'll post pictures of so I won't be SO out of place. *blush* :P

DANG! I just found out that I can't post multiple pictures! Let me see if I can make sense...

I added a picture on another post of my Yorkie. Then I put a picture on another post of my Toy Poodle. Then I went and changed my profile and put this picture of one of my Lhasas on it. When I did that, ALL the pictures I've posted are now of my Lhasa. Even on old posts where I never had a picture before. Did I make this clear as mud? So if you change the picture in your profile, it changes ALL your pictures, past and present. Oh, well... I learned something new, so when you see me talking about Yorkies and Poodles, but don't see anything even remotely resembling such, I'm not crazy. Honest. Well, ok, THAT doesn't make me crazy. :o

Told you my posts always come in groups...

15 Minute Liver Treats

1 lb chicken livers
1 cup flour
1 cup corn meal
1 Tablespoon garlic powder
1 Egg

Place chicken livers and liquid in blender, liquify. Add egg, mix a minute more. Pour into bowl. Add flour, corn meal and garlic powder. Mix. Spray jelly roll pan with pam. Pour mixture into pan. Bake 15 minutes in 400 degree hot oven. Cut into small squares while still warm. Keep in freezer to prevent spoilage.
My dogs love them frozen.

LIVER TREATS

All you need are beef livers. Try your local meat packers; they often throw them away. Or you can buy fresh liver from the supermarket.

Cut the liver into approximately 1 inch slices. Place in your food dehydrator for 24 hours*. Use Pam or the equivalent on the drying racks, so the liver won't stick. Let dry for 24 hours. *Or you could place them on a cookie sheet and bake in a 325 degree oven for about 45 minutes to help dry them out.

TEMPTING TRAINING TREATS

2 1/3. cup flour (all-purpose or whole wheat) 1/4 cup olive oil
1/4 cup applesauce
1/2 cup grated cheese (like parmesan)
1 large egg
1 tsp. garlic powder
1/4 cup non-fat powdered milk

Combine all ingredients in a large bowl; mix well; Roll the dough out to size of a cookie sheet; Pat the dough onto a lightly greased cookie sheet, bringing it to the edges.
Using a sharp knife or a pizza cutter, cut desired sizes into dough (just score through). If you're using as training treats, cut them into small pieces; Sprinkle a little extra cheese and garlic powder if desired on dough for flavor. Bake in a 350 degree oven about 15 minutes until golden brown. Turn off the oven and let cool for a few hours; They will keep hardening the longer you leave them. Break them apart; store tightly covered or in the freezer.

1 1/4 cups grated cheese, (cheddar or something mild)
1/2 stick softened margarine
1 - 2 garlic cloves, crushed
Milk as needed

Cream the cheese and margarine together. Add the garlic. Add the flour and mix thoroughly. Add enough milk to form into a ball. Chill for 1/2 hour or so. Roll onto a lightly floured surface. Cut into shapes and bake at 375 degrees for 15 minutes or until lightly golden brown and firm. Makes 2-3 dozen cookies.

Luscious Chicken Liver Chewies

1 cup whole wheat flour
1 cup regular flour
1 cup cornmeal
2 tbsp vegetable oil
1 egg, beaten
1/2 cup chicken stock (you can use the juice from boiling the livers)
2 tsp. garlic powder
1 cup chopped chicken livers, cooked

Combine flour and cornmeal. In a separate bowl, add egg with oil, add broth and garlic; mix well. Add dry ingredients to bowl a little at a time, stirring well. Fold in chicken livers and mix well. Dough will be firm. Put dough on lightly floured surface and knead briefly. Roll out to 1/2" thick and cut into shapes. Place on greased cookie sheets. Bake 15 minutes or until firm. Store in the refrigerator, or freeze for future snacks.

Frozen Fruit Treats

Lots of Fruit
Fruit Juice
Low-fat Yogurt
Honey
Cinnamon

Place any fruit you favor in a blender. Some great ones are strawberries, cantaloupe, watermelons, apples, peaches, or bananas. Add some unsweetened juice (your choice - pineapple is good). Add a little low-fat yogurt for thickening, honey for sweetening, and 1/2 tsp. cinnamon. Puree until well blended and smooth. Freeze in little cups or ice cube trays and serve as "popsicles".
