1. When I built a new house a few years ago, I had my landscaping finished up just as my next door neighbors were moving into their house, which had just been finished. This means that I had a lush green yard and they had dirt. The woman who lived there bought the kids a black lab right away. It wasn't a puppy, probably close to a year old. Since they didn't have a fenced yard, she had to walk the dog several times a day - which meant bringing the dog over onto my beautiful new grass to let it crap. I asked her... and asked... and asked her to have the dog poop in her own yard, and she said that the dog didn't want to poop on the dirt and they couldn't afford to landscape their yard yet. I couldn't call the cops because her husband was a cop. I pretty much figured out when the dog had to do its business and as soon as it was done, I started going out there with a shovel and flinging it up into the air and onto their driveway where it made a big splat. They didn't see it right away the first few times and it dried on there. I know, it was pretty childish of me, but it really amused me. They had 6 kids- 3 of hers, and 3 of his- so they were always playing out on the driveway. A couple of mornings I saw the dad hosing down the driveway and scraping it to get the poo off of it. Strangely, I didn't have any more problems with the dog poop after that! :D
2. Thanks everyone for your advice. The hardest thing for me to handle, is how differently is has made me feel towards him as a friend. It's pretty hard to find out your buddy has done something that you consider to be horrible. He sees it very differently though -- more like an unavoidable incident. "Well, how can you avoid a hailstorm happening?". I don't know if he is honest enough with himself to admit that if the dog had been inside that this would not have happened. :( I know when Jack was a puppy that he was crate trained and stayed there during the day. I don't know at what point he began to be left outside, I know I wasn't aware of it. :x On a (somewhat) better note, he does not plan to get another dog. I asked him and he said no, because he doesn't have the time to care for it properly and give it the attention it needs. So that is good.
3. That is an insane price to pay for a mixed breed, mutt, Heinz 57, what have you. I read an article somewhere about how Labradoodles are selling for tons of $$, and they are a mixed breed just like any dog you could get at the pound in need of a good home.
4. I have a friend who I don't see very often (maybe once a month or so), and when I got together with him on Friday, I asked how his Chi was. His doggie was a little black long-haired Chihuahua named Jack. He just looked at me, and then said"Well, you don't know about this. I didn't know how to tell you. Jack died." He then told me the story. Apparently, Jack was being kept outside during the day, despite the fact that Chis are NOT EVER outside dogs. How can a 3 pound dog be expected to be ok outside? He left Jack outside on a daily basis, and one day when he got home from work, Jack wasn't barking at the back door to meet him. My friend went out in the back yard and Jack was lying there dead, buried in several inches of hail from a storm. Jack had a little doghouse in the yard, and my friend couldn't understand why he hadn't stayed in the house. I suggested that Jack probably got scared when the hail was beating on the roof of his doghouse, ran outside, and was probably too scared to make his way back into his house. So little Jack was *BEATEN* to death by hail. It just makes me sick to think of how scared he must have been. Then to top this story off, he said, "We took his body to the to the vet to dispose of it. They gave us his pawprint on a piece of paper. We really treasure that." Honestly, this is what he said - dispose. If I had had any idea that Jack was being left outside during the day, I think I would have done a intervention dognapping on him, and never let my friend come to my house ever again. I am having a lot of trouble with what happened here, and it is making me look at him differently as a friend. He has been a good friend to me, but he is not a good dog owner. 9. That is very cute! I would love to have a Pit Bull if I did not have such a tiny dog already.
10. Does "pulled" mean she was adopted? I always feel so bad for senior dogs who lose their homes. Or are given up.
11.
I called the guy back and said "your kids are tresspassing....if they climb the fence again I WILL have to call the police, for their safety and my potential liability because of this...."
Good for you! I hope that this will have a good result in keeping your property secure!
12. I might sound like a real jerk for saying this, but I would call the cops the next time the kid does this and see if they will come out to give them a talk about trespassing and how it is *AGAINST THE LAW*. Yeah, you'll really tick off the neighbors , but I think it's important for kids to learn things like this. And getting a scary little visit from the police might be a good toll for this. Your dogs sound gentle, but how many stories are there of children who go into yards where the dogs are territorial and protective? Then when something happens to the kid, it is somehow all the dogs' fault! It shouldn't be all that difficult for them to keep their toys out of your yard anyways.
13. What a sweet little old girl! I would have had trouble passing her by too if I saw her up for adoption. LOL --"lap fungus" - I have a bad case of that right now. I always do whenever I sit at the computer. :P
