1. Dr Phil is a fool, he always has been. He may be charismatic and a self-marketing genius, but he's still a fool. I remember seeing one show where a couple were having problems with their dog basically running the household. So what does Dr Phil do? He gives the dog to a rescue.... And then he gets the people a puppy!!! Bad Dr Phil, bad, no weight loss challenge for you! :lmaa:
2. I want to back the truck up here a minute. My origional intent for this thread was to show a list of breeds we would be covering on the website, as well as showing who was working on what particular breeds. I know there are alot of inaccuracies provided in the info for each breed, that's ok as this is not info we are going to be publishing on the website. The description is pretty much there to give someone a very basic idea of what a dog looks like visually if they aren't familiar with the breed. So, that said, are there any other breeds we need to include or exclude from the list? Also pipe up if there are any particular breeds you want to work on. I will be adding names shortly and looking back on the other thread for those who've alreedy expressed a desire to work on certain breeds.
3. I agree with DO, have him checked out by his vet before anything else to rule out any possible medical issues. How close were the strangers to you when he 'snapped'? Possesivness/protectivness toward you might be a possible reason why. Seeing as how Justin had just left that could be a trigger for Cody to be more possesive. Or maybe not.
4.
Poor little skunk. :( China exacted her revenge! She must be very tenacious. Here's a question, if another skunk moves in, will she do it again?
Oh I'm sure she'd do it again given the opportunity, China can be dumb as a carp sometimes. Thankfully skunk smell doesn't bother me much at all, I've smelled plenty worse. The worst part was all the scrubbing involved, in the rain during the wee hours, fresh out of bed after four hours sleep, and again right after a 10 hour day. Huskies are not easy to clean and I was beat. That, and leaving my poor puppies outside all night long, that really felt horrible. I have a pretty good de-skunk recipe consisting of dish soap, lemon juice, baking soda, and vinegar. I also picked up some tearless commercial stuff from work called Skunk-Off to do her face, but it was a bit less effective.
5.
I would not use the term "kuvasz-like". Countries of origin for the flock guardians are as follows:
That's strictly for the purpose of giving folks unfamiliar with the breeds something to compare with visually. Edits made: -removed akbash -created seperate entries for lanseer ECT & landseer, american
6. Well, my little skunk came to visit me again last night... for the last time. When I let the dogs out last night for the final potty run they ended up skunked. :-? Usually, I know when there is something in the backyard when the girls start acting a little TOO excited to go outside. This time there was no indication, in fact the spent some time meandering around the yard until Zoey assumingly stumbled across him. A few seconds or so later a flash of white indicated China charging over, followed immediately afterward by a crashing through the under brush. As soon as I saw Zoey come out of the shadows plowing the dirt with her snout I knew what happened. Sure enough China was right there with her face in the grass a second after that. :wallbash: Yeah, so it was almost one in the morning and I had to give two dogs a bath. :-? My favorite part was when it started down-pouring just as soon as I went outside with the dog washing gear. :x Anyway, I guess they still smelled terrible after that but I wouldn't know because by that time evreything smelled like a skunk's butt. I was heart-broken at having to leave my puppies outside for the night. The morning brought further evidence of the drama unfolding. Most notabley the dead body of my little skunk and an even stronger smelling China. That's right kids, nobody learned their lesson! Apparantly the little stink machine was feeling confident and came back during the wee hours of the morning. I estimate at about three o'clock, that was when I heard Zoey frantically trying to claw her way through the sliding glass door, probably in a desperate effort to escape the backyard. Well China apparently thought that she couldn't smell any worse and had attacked and killed the skunk, but not before getting sprayed again. :-? So I bathed China twice more before having to go to work in the morning. :-? Zoey thankfully seemed to know better and by that time was back to her same old normal smell. So then I spent 10 hours at work today, came home and bathed China yet twice more. She's still got a bit of a funk about her, but now I can at least let the dogs back in the house again. Yeesh I have no desire to repeat that ever again. I will miss my skunk though...
7. Edits are in progress: Please note that there are several misspellings and shortened names on the list. As far as breed descriptions go, I tried to make them as brief as possible just for people to get a very basic idea of breeds they may not be familiar with. Most descriptions were done off the top of my head, and due to the tedium (I worked strait through it) there will be many inconsistancies and flaws. Keep the corrections coming and be patient, if I miss something just let me know. Just keep in mind that the info here is not very important, the facts we provide on the web site is what needs to be precise. Pyrenees- point taken, was mostly for physical description. Do these breeds have a mastiff origin or no? Wolfdogs- realize that, it was the shortest summary I could come up with at the time. American Indian Dog- didn't realize that-struck from the list alpine dachsbrake- spelling noted bavarian hound- noted, I've only ever seen one black & white photo, it looked fairly low-slung to me german spitz- thanks, my info here was murky. should I include the 3 middle sizes as breeds? kromfohrlander- noted. It is a general purpose farm dog right? labradoodle- I only included this one because it is breed that was in developement for a specific purpose. noted and removed muensterlaender- spelling noted- trying to keep description as generic as possible- i'll double check, but I'm pretty sure I have a listing for three sizes poodle- keeping in with original breed purpose- I don't think it's confuse anyone viszla- noted: neglected to mention landseer- should there be two seperate breeds, or two types of the same breed? english springer- lack of continuity. meant to be a large variety of spaniel, rather than large sized dog- there are many of this particular inconinuity if you look search enough golden lab- similar in purpose to labradoodle
8. China had never been indoors for the first 5 or 6 years if her life. She is a mix breed, but she's every bit as hard-headed and husky-like as any pure bred. She adjusted fine given that she spent the first part of her life as partially feral, though she still has her quirks. I think what happens alot of times is that people will get a husky breed thinking it a 'cool' or macho dog, and being unprepared for the clash of wills that is owning a husky, the dog ends up outdoors permanently. The result often being a poorly socialized, rampaging, backyard godzilla.

10. LOL, thanks DO. I wanted to post that link in my reply, but then I got off track... LOL, It sucks having a short attention span.
11. Welcome to the forum Adam. In my experience Boxers are one of those breeds that have a natural territorial/guarding instinct, you have to keep in mind that they are a mastiff-type breed. You have to stay in control of them (this goes for any dog of course) or they will get too big for their britches and the owners end up dealing with aggression issues. My thoughts are that Bosco thinks he's in control and is calling the shots as to what he's going to guard and how he's going to do it. It may be that you are still the alpha in his eyes, but not your wife and daughter, which may be why does this behavior with them and not you (I'm assuming that he isn't showing aggression toward you). I'd suggest getting started on NILIF (Nothing In Life Is Free) training right away and get your wife involved in the training as well. This will show him that the humans of the household are higher-ranking in the pack than he is. You also need to correct ANY aggressive behavior toward visitors/strangers and reward him for good social transactions. There are people on this forum, some who are professional, trainers who can explain the specifics far better than I, and hopefully they can give you some better advice. At home training may not be enough, you may want to consider seeing a behavioralist to help you out.
12.
Why is it everytime a large breed dog is involved in these kind of incidents especially pit bulls everyone says how horrible the owners are and poor dog for having to live with someone like that. Even when there is a death. But a little dog is involved and the little dog stories come out to prove how horrible they are and how they are the worst. No getting mauled and killed is the worst. Not talking to everyone just the ones that made statements that include all small dogs.
I think that with the witch hunts that are a part of society these days, dog owners people tend to react defensively when a situation occurs with a large dog, particularly certain breeds. Honestly, to admit even the slightest natural behavioral issue with any breed, no matter what the size, is to lose our footing with BSL lobbyists. Of course we all know here that the problem always lies in the owner, maybe in an individual dog, and in most dog bite cases the animal is being kept improperly one way or another. The major difference between large dogs and small dogs is that no one bothers to carry on about how 'dangerous' small dog breeds and lobby to ban them. At least not yet... And in regards to that little Westie mix I ran into today, his problem is definately his owner. He needs to be in a home that understands dogs, when that woman's baby grows into dog chasing toddler I can almost promise you that the dog will be going through the ol' quarantine and PTS routine at the pound. I do agree that it's derogatory to say that all little dogs are jerks, but I do think that it is more often the case in smaller dogs than larger ones. Alot of small breeds are terriers, or very terrier-like, which makes them born with an attitude to begin with. Another thing to keep in mind is that smaller dogs are more convieniently sized for puppy-millers, thus theoretically more prone to temperment issues due to irresponsibility on the breeders behalf. Then of course there is the small dog owner attitude that because their dog is small and not a threat to life and limb, that they don't need to have manners. Just some thoughts of mine on the issue.
13.
Do you think he was out to potty, maybe? I hope she didn't leave him out. That's so sad.
I somehow doubt it. It seems like more huskies live out their lives as yard dogs rather than as family members. Sorry, but only a fool just lets their dogs out in a severe hurricane without taking them out on-leash, she would've cooked too.
14. The score has changed: Me:1 - Little Fluffy Dog:1 The small fluzzy types seem to have it out for me. I was helping a client out the door today who had her hands full with a baby in one hand and a leash attached to a little Westie Mix in the other hand. Went I went to open the door she dropped the leash, and of course me being to tactful gentleman that I am, reached down to pick it up. I guess I was too tall for the little mongrel's taste, or I just got into his 'personal space', either way he decided to go for me. I'm pretty quick, so he missed my hand, but he bit onto my shoe when I stood upright. :madgo: So he didn't like me, I could live with that. What really got me hot was that there was NO correction. None. Nothing. All the owner said was, "Oh *omit name*, stop being so crabby", Gaaahhh! :wallbash: I wonder how long it's going to take before he bites the kid and ends up at the pound....?
15. No I really didn't want to have to boot the little dog, as it was it was a sort of scoopy, flinging kind of a kick, a full contact kick would have done some damage. At the same time I don't feel bad for doing it at all either, I sure wasn't going to stick my hand down there after the fuzzy little pirahna. :-?
16. Poor Teddy, I wonder if the combonation of poor diet plus heavy matting were breaking and plucking the hairs out of his little hide?
17. I'm not entirely sure I go for the thought of a 3 mo old being blatantly aggressive. Maybe he was allowed to get away with playing rougher and rougher until his play bites have reached this point? In any case, unless the little guy is completely sick in the head, there shouldn't be any problem with putting him back in his place with some proper basic training. I would like to add that Lhasa's are quite territorial, and in my opinon should be treated as any large breed dog with a moderate to high territrial instinct.
18.
sometimes ya gotta do what ya gotta do....no onewas hurt, thats all that matters. maybe the idiot will have learned something from this....
Maybe he learned something, maybe not. After I'd simmered down some the firt thing that came to my mind was the fracas that you posted about the other day. After all's been said and done I'm mostly glad that my situation didn't escalate into something similar.
19. I'm glad for you that the police were actually trying to be helpful, all to often it they seem to be begrudgingly doing their day-in-day-out jobs without without concern for how their crappy attitudes can affect other people's lives. But that's a whole other issue. I hope you're not worrying too much about this fiasco at this point. Hopefully this clown will be smart enough (though this has yet to be seen) not to file a civil suit, and I doubt that he will seeing as how the police were alredy involved and likely to testify against him. And even if it does come to a suit, and if (big IF, really big IF) you do lose against him I think the only thing he can sue you for would be the cost of his dog's medical care. I know little about legal issues, but I'm pretty sure that you can't get restitution for emotional damages where pets are concerned because they are property and are 'legally' only worth their physical value.
20. I'd be interested. I don't know a whole lot about web design, but I do have a good deal of general knowledge on canine history and at least basic info about most breeds in general. I don't know if I'd make a good director, but maybe an assistant director or some such thing, as I am fair-minded and open to seeing all sides of most given views.
21. Me and the girls got jumped on the way home this morning from a trip to the park. We were coming past a house where two older men were sitting on their porch with a little Shih Tzu. I actually didn't know the little fluff ball was there until it started barking and bombed down off the porch at us. I wasn't too sure of it's intent so I had my dogs 'hold it' were they were at and I stepped forward so that the little dog would have to come by me first so I could determine what he was up to. Well the bugger flew past me without even a 'hi, how ya' doing' and lept up at Zoey's face! :-? It then proceeded to circle around madly biting my girls in the hocks. Poor China and Zoey had no idea what they were supposed to be doing and just tried to get out od the little guy's way as well as eachothers'. The dog's owner was on his way off the porch (taking his sweet time), while I stomped the ground and growled out a 'No!' (which didn't even make it hesitate). It didn't take long for my girls to have had enough, China was baring her teeth, and it seemed likely that either the little beast was going to get ripped to pieces, or worse, his owner was going to get bite when he reached for his pooch out of the tangle of dogs. So I made a command decision: I punted the little b@stard. It wasn't the most well thought-out plan because I almost landed him out in the street, but I didn't know what else to do at the time. I was going to just go along my merry way after that, but of course the litlle dog's owner wasn't happy with me and started to b!tch me out. I usually don't find it worth my time to squabble with people, and an appology probably would have gotten him off my back, but I seems I had left the house without any of those this morning. Instead I asked if he would rather I just let my dogs rip his "obviously aggressive, off-leash, and off-property" dog to pieces. That seemed to shut him up and he carried his little hell-hound back to the porch muttering something under his breath. I couldn't make out what he was mumbling but it probably had something to do with how wise and gentle I am, and how benevolent and and just I treat all life. :D
22. Dear god, the bugger looks like he's been mummified, run through the washer/dryer, brought back to life, and then blown up with an ugly bomb for good measure.
23. I'd like to be a Coonhound, doesn't matter which breed. If you ask me a dog's life doesn't get any better than bombing through the woods with some of your buddies, yelling at the top of your lungs while chasing varmints, all the while running through the mud and muck and just causing general mayhem. The only thing that could be better than that would be that no one will expect you to do anything else! :D
24. Kat hit the nail on the head. And if she still skips meals every so often don't worry about it, it can be perfectly normal for some individual dogs to be light eaters.
25. Hi there, I'm going to chime in as well. I was perusing the Borzoi page and noticed a few mis-facts. -Height Standard: What you have listed are commonly minimum height requirments for females and males respectively. I believe that most clubs do not list a max height requiremnt as I has seen some truelu monsterous sized males. -Your origination description can be a little misleading. It can make it sound like Borzoi are basically a crossbreed of Sloughi and Collie. There were once several (maybe seven?) distinct types, or bloodlines of Borzoi, but almost all of them were wiped out along with the Russian aristocracy, as well as breeding ledgers and other important documents. I think it's supposed that Borzoi originated from either Sloughi or Afghans, or at least had common ancestory. Now regarding Collies, in actuality it was Borzoi that were bred to what we know now as Farm or Irish Collies in order to make a larger and more impressive show dog.
